Online Map of UK Counties?
« on: 11 April, 2008, 02:38:12 pm »
I asked this once elsewhere, but didn't get very far.

Does anyone know of an online map of the UK that shows:

* County boundaries
* Cities/towns (at least major ones)
* Roads (and maybe rail lines)
* Rivers

Most of the ones I can find show the county boundaries, but no cities, rivers, etc., which makes them fairly useless.

In part, I'm trying to refresh my memory of where various counties and cities are so that I can better follow some threads here. Also, having a map like this would help with some books on my to-read pile. So any suggestions (other than "sod off" :-) ) would be appreciated.

Here's something to start with.

Please note that Ceredigion has erroniously been named Cardiganshire.  Other than that it will be useful for the counties until someone finds one with the cities as well.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Draw the bits you require on the useless map yourself with crayons?

Not sure when that [Basil's] map was correct. I was born in Huntingdonshire but it's long since been absorbed by Cambridgeshire.

There's more than one Yorkshire now too. :)

The Association of British Counties is based upon what it considers to be "traditional" county boundaries. The map that Basil refers to was probably "correct" about 50 years ago.

I remember as a child being fascinated by the maps in an atlas given to me by my grandmother. It was a school atlas no doubt in use around the end of the 19th century when she was teaching.

On Basil's map, Cardiganshire was indeed what it was called. There's a bit of Lancashire separated from the rest (the Furness area IIRC) and that little bit in between Shropshire, Cheshire and Denbighshire.

Anyone know what that was? ;)

My father told me that he came across a 19th century atlas which has Cornwall labelled "West Wales".

There's more than one Yorkshire now too. :)

The West, East and North Ridings always were separate counties I think - and wasn't the City of York outside all of them? No doubt Clarion can confirm.

Reading the blurb on the site, it would appear to be another bit of Flintshire

Yes, I saw the blurb after posing the question. It was indeed labelled "Part of Flint" on my old atlas.

Thanks--but while the page is interesting, those maps just have the boundaries.

If I had the data, I could use ArcMap to make my own map on my lunch hour. But I don't, and besides, it's a beautiful spring day...l  :)

I could come up with an illicit shapefile for current administrative boundaries, as shown here
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/geography/downloads/UK_LADUACty.pdf

However, you are probably best off sticking to the pre-1972 counties, as shown on Basil's map. They still have an official status as "ceremonial counties", and will be what most people refer to.
The administrative boundaries get mucked about with too much, so Rutland was abolished and then revived, Herefordshire and Worcestershire were combined, and then split back up, Swindon is now a unitary authority on its own and no longer part of Wiltshire etc etc

For major towns and roads, the data on http://www.openstreetmap.org/index.html is reasonably complete, and is legitimately pinchable.

Scott - I may have a jigsaw of the UK in the garage which might help.  I'll have a rummage through the piles of car boot stuff.

This site is a useful place to start.

Sorry Scott - it would be a bit small to show too much anyway.  It has the main cities but not rivers or counties I'm afraid.

Ordnance Survey's 1:50,000 scale maps show all the things you mention.
OS Landranger 1:50000 are also available in a scrollable format (a la google) at multimap.  County boundaries are the thick black dash-dot lines.
