Census thread for discussions about the census

I thought we might as well have a dedicated thread for discussions about the 2021 census because there does seem to be a lot of that clogging up the random thread.

On the census front, the Beardy household is still to receive any communication regarding the completion of the same. But I understand 21st is the formal census date so will await developments.

Judging by the Random thread, it seems some people are being sent a form to fill in and others are being asked to do it online. I don't know if there's a selection process involved or if this is just random, or perhaps regional? But I do wonder if it's not a comparison trial, to see which type generates a higher response rate or something.

Response rate might be skewed by receipt rate.

I have received a fair amount of censuseering from the British Humanist Association encouraging me to state that I have No Religion.

No pope here! Nor any other denomination of sky-pilot (although TimC would be quite welcome when Things Are Back To Normal).

Wow! I've no idea where my great-grandparents were born. Well, I can be pretty sure for 4 of them, make a reasonable guess for 2, and the final 2 I really don't know, except that the countries they were born in certainly don't exist in the same form now.

Basil seemed to imply he'd been sent the form on paper, but maybe this a) Wales b) he asked for it and received it quickly c) a misunderstanding on my part.

My wife's born in Wales to Scottish parents.One Granny N Ireland Presbyterian.
(hence the Irish/EU passport eligibility).

But we're both WHITE, so I guess we're English ?

Thanks for reminding me about countries changing. D's mother was from the South Tyrol. This is in Italy now but was Austria...
D's father is of Turkish and Greek Jewish stock.
My mother is of German Jewish stock and my father's line is mostly Dutch...

We are white-skinned and blue-eyed ?Jewish ?Aryan¹ ?Europeans...

1) My mother was described as a 'typical Aryan child' by a German soldier in occupied Copenhagen, during WWII. My German-born grandfather kept a straight face...

I've had that, too - not that I need to be persuaded.  Must say, I hadn't really thought that much about the implications of people just ticking "C of E" (or whatever) as a default, just because they went through the traditional school system, attended a few christenings, weddings, funerals etc.  Whatever goes on the census form may be used as a justification for policy decisions by lawmakers or others.  More here: https://humanism.org.uk/census-2021/

OK, nationality is simple enough, but ethnicity's a bit vague isn't it?

If you know who is going to be sleeping in your house on 21 March (I think that's the wording) you can fill it in in advance if you want.

I guess that's an easier decision to reach under lockdown...

I fully expect to be sleeping in my house on the 21 March . . . but I really can't be sure. Can I?  After all, I may die in the meantime 

I've always assumed that the census figures indicate who was living where on a certain date - but I suppose it may just represent the situation in, say, March 1 - March 21 inclusive?

I suppose that raises questions about double- or non-counting if someone moves from England to Scotland or vice versa between now and then, but maybe that doesn't matter as it's simply a snapshot.

Letter with online code received here (SE London) this morning. Complete as for March 21st, whenever you feel you have certainty as to the occupancy on that date; scope to amend if that changes.
