The comments about his impact in giving people the means to create their own compilation tapes (I will never call them mixtapes) reminded me of this little piece from last year:

We were convinced at my school that tapes branded 'metal' were actually specially made for heavy metal. Fact.

To this day, I have no idea what metal and chrome were, other than they cost a pound more for a five-pack from Woolies.

One comment in the Guardian pointed out that, though he died at 94, he once was young and spoolish.

Fortunately, I don't believe in magnets.

I always wondered if something bad would happen in some distance place if I pressed the metal/chrome button on the deck but had a standard TDK playing.

IIRC, the metal switch is about selecting a different bias level on recording (which is a thing you have to do in tape recorders because magnets, which we know aren't real), and different equalisation on playback.  So it lets you choose between 'muffled' or 'hissy'.  In principle, with a correctly-recorded metal tape, you get less hiss without the recording sounding muffled.  This never happened.

As a child of the 80s, by the time my electronics education had reached a point where I understood these subtleties, pretty much everything vaguely serious you'd do with audio had become digital, and tapes were for the car.

Ha, the TDK. They're ruled. 'High position' too, that's got to be quality. Best appreciated on Amstrad's finest stereo hardware. Nik Kershaw surely never sounded so good.

I used to experimentally press the metal/chrome button, and sometimes, if I was feeling very radical, the dolby button. That made everything sound a bit underwater and gave a tune a certain acquired benthic ambience. I think that's what ultimately drove me goth. That and a two-for-one deal on black hair dye in Boots.

It's strange that something as fundamental to my childhood has been rendered meaningless by the merciless march of time. I really did conduct relationships through the exchange of often badly copied music. And it was quite the thing to get crappy bootlegs of gigs down the market, just because you had so-and-so's 20-minute-before-they-stormed-off gig down Rock City. Anyone wants to know what was up-and-coming on the Ottawa music scene c95, I'm your man.

Don't get the C120s though, they'd always eventually meander around the tape heads and you'd spend hours trying to extricate and respool and even if you were successful, the dropouts would always be strategically placed to most annoy.

I think I only ever had one C120, because you needed it to fit the whole of “The Song Remains The Same” on a single cassette.

Oh, how I miss those days of roadsides in summer glittering with ribbons of discarded tape.

It's the terms like high speed dubbing, soft eject, tape counter, Dolby B, C etc that I really liked.

High speed dubbing on a twin tape deck allowed you to bootleg your friends tapes in low quality very quickly. I think we used it once.

Soft eject still lives on, but only in stuff like kitchen drawers fitted with blum kitchen dampers

I've seen roadkill CDRs that may have once contained them (car radios that could play discs of MP3 files were certainly a thing, though recordable CDs of red book audio were more common).  Presumably unreadable before they were discarded, though.

Soft eject was very important. Watching that cassette slowly reveal. No hurry, it had till the late 90s. Reminds me of top-loading VCRs. I'm sorry, but I never trusted a front loader. I had a top loader in the US that I swear to this day was possessed. Happy times. Tell children today that you used to watch knock-off movie from the floor, as you dynamically adjusted the tracking control for a frankly unappreciative audience on the sofa. It doesn't bloody go any further.

I'm pleased to say that was a cassette that got me dishonourably discharged from the Boy's Brigade after only three sessions. Believe it or not, that was all down to an audio-only copy of Knight Rider and a resulting scuffle that resulted in my mental friend (we all had one, unless it was you) Tim beating up the fuhrer's son while I yanked out streamers of tape. Honestly, how we survived three fucking weeks, I don't know. All my other friend's mum's fault, she was one of those who always thought we should be doing something. Yeah, by signing us up to some Christian paramilitary organization. Mind you, last I heard he's a senior policeman now.

I think mine went in the last clear-out.  It seemed a bit pointless without a Future Classic to install it in.

What did the tape counter actually count? Presumably it was centimetres of tape?

No, it was the number of rotations of the take-up reel since the counter was reset.

Close enough - the book that contains the technical specificiations for the standard audio CD has a red cover.

I think it was arbitrary, I don't remember it being portable between machines, so Ant Music might start at 326 on my trusty smoked glass-doored Amstrad, but 432 on my friend's* fancy Sony that he wasn't supposed to use because it was his dad's. They had all the fancy stuff including, take a breath, video discs and a giant camcorder.

*for those following my life story, this friend was the same chap as is now the policeman, whose mum pressganged us into the Boy's Brigade, also, apropos of magnetic tape, he was the one that found his dad's VCR porn stash, and the unfortunate and deeply disturbing consequence that it was home-made porn, courtesy of that camcorder. Unreasonably, he wouldn't let us borrow it either.
