Two VTT cannondales , fat tyres for the route forestaire.   You can do the tracks and sometimes contour across to another col without loosing too much height.

What a fun encounter :)
and I love the way no two tandems are set up the same.

Some more tandems on tour. The French like camping in style, its how you do it, not how fast you are from A to B on tour.
and they like a few cafe stops.

Tandem at bike shop , French cyclists looking for a new tyre in Granada. Another variation on tandem luggage setup.

Interesting to see the unusual transmission set up.

I came across a tandem with that set-up a couple of years ago. I guess that it has no issues with chain crossing but I bet the return side of the drive chain bounces about a bit.

That used to be commonplace in France between the wars and after. Some front mechs were operated by a lever on the seat tube and it reduces BB bearing wear.

Even more interesting is the bent rear seat tube. I have seen this fairly often on older tandems made in France. I can understand that for a track or criterium racing tandem, a slightly shorter wheelbase is probably a good point. But on a touring tandem, who cares about 2 or 3 extra cm of wheelbase?

With small diameter tubing, making tubes shorter increases frame stiffness, particularly if heavily loaded.

It's not uncommon for recumbents to have an unsecured return side chain of that sort of length.  It's usually fine, unless you're a habitual user of small:small gears or get resonance from a really bad road surface.
