It seems to happen less these days as I think venues are stricter about finishing times, but I can recall many instances of acts keeping the audience waiting for an hour or more and, in one case, rolling on stage at almost 11pm on a Sunday night, by which time many in the audience had to leave to catch last trains, etc.
At the other end of the scale are the ones who just don't want to leave the stage. I remember one John Martyn gig where the venue eventually turned on all the house lights and turned the stage lights off in an attempt to get him to stop!
