.vob to .flv or .mov
« on: 03 May, 2010, 01:24:38 pm »
Does anyone know of a free prog that converts .vob to .flv or .mov format please?  - I have found 2 or 3 but even the trial version leaves an obtrusive watermark.

It's a one-off need for a video from a charity ride - the  .vob is about 250Mb - a watermarked .mov comes out at a more manageable size

Thanks

HandBrake

It is simpler than it looks.

PC (are there other computers?!?!?!)

Handbrake seems to only want to convert to MP4 ... or stuff for Apple gadgets ... unless I'm misunderstanding it all (probably)

.mov is a container format,  you sure an mp4 won't do?

Hmm, yes, I see what you mean.

What are you doing with the file when you have converted it?

MEncoder can transcode any format to any format, pretty much and does so fast. There seems to be a Windows port (with GUI) here. Never tried it myself, though.

It's to go on a website - the 250Mb .vob file converts to about 32Mb as a .wmv and about 41Mb as .avi and about 32Mb as .flv

I can live with that size - it's the watermark I don't want

Rob

PS - Mencoder seems to either not really be free and/or not download :-(    - there's loads of crap that tries to get you to buy other shareware stuff

What about uploading it to Youtube / Vimeo etc? You can then embed it onto your website from there.

Or you could save the FLV file from Youtube if you want.

It's not for open viewing ... (content is safe!)

That's unfortunate :(. I might have a windows exe file somewhere if that's any good to you? It's command-line only, mind ;). The s/w that came with my lad's MP3/4 player is basically MEncoder with a GUI.

You could upload it as a private video, then youtube gives you the option of downloading the MP4 file (whatever the original was), if that helps.
