CHELTENHAM FLYER 200 (+CwR150) 10 MAR 2012
« on: 07 February, 2012, 06:08:56 pm »
Followers of Ron Carlton’s Cheltenham Flyer over more than 20 years (I have ridden 11 since 1992) should not be disappointed in the new incarnation of Ron’s route. Ron’s earlier routes went into Shropshire over Clee Hill. The Flyer migrated to the Cotswolds with Ron’s final versions drifting into Wiltshire.

Having accepted to run Cheltenham’s Flyer 200, I have linked with my earlier Cider with Rosie routes down the Coln Valley.  From the R Thames, we go south to the Kennet & Avon Canal and (from Burbage) across to Lacock to follow (almost) Ron’s previous return home. For a shorter ride there is a Cider with Rosie 150.

I have also developed a new Perm to match the new route, so representative variations of all 3 Cheltenham Flyers can be ridden as Permanents.

Check it out on the Audax Calendar website, where you can find the 2012 version Routesheet and gps track and PayPal entry.

Hoping to ride this, but lacking fitness at the moment with the current weather situation.

Keeping fingers crossed for some slightly milder weather again soon.

Seems very quiet in these parts. Entries to date suggest it is in deep mid-Winter rather than the onset of Spring. What has happened to the average entry of 82 for the past 3yrs.

New route starts in Andoversford and ventures deeper into Wiltshire and it is a Cracker.  I rode it today (Sun) with my gps tracing the exact route; this is now the .gpx on the AUK Website and this is my Garmin link:

http://connect.garmin.com/course/697265

I will be updating the routesheet based on today's pre-ride.  The local Controls just need to know definitive numbers, so if you want to ride please contact (PayPal entry available) soonest.

Well I just looked at the route, and I am glad that I am already entered...

I am DIYxGPSing 200 k to stay at the Chelt Travelodge the day before, and being picked up, after the CNF, by the better half, and driven (yes driven - luxury) to High Wycombe Travelodge for Saturday night, so I can do the Chiltern Hills Brevet on the Sunday...

It will be an interesting weekend indeed !!   ;D ;D

I had this one in mind but decided to do a DIY on 13th March with Banjo to free up a weekend for non cycling purposes.

I'm starting to get a bit twitchy now though, looks like a really nice ride.

Come on Rob - you are fit enough now - we can pose side by side at the start, and post the photo !!!

Just tried to enter via PayPal but not sure if it went through.  PM me if you haven't received my entry via pay pal (Richard K).
It sounds like a good route and if it's half as good as your Gospel Pass ride, it'll do for me!

Fitness isn't a problem now. I have two calendar events and a DIY already in March. I have other non cycling (boring) stuff that needs a bit of time.  :(
We'll get the picture at the Start of Barry's Bristol Ball Buster..........I'm sure you'll be there  ;D

I have entered this, and it's currently the only thing I have entered that I won't be riding on a tandem! If it's dry the Sabbath will get an outing

Very much against my better judgement I've decided to enter. Way too many hills for my liking. The weather better be good that's all I can say.
You're only as successful as your last 1200...

I have just replaced the RS with a RS + Info sheet.  Any problems I can email master versions that are not zipped. email on event page.

Just downloaded revised RS, and it is fine, however the route is only partially shown on the map, whereas on the previous version it shows very clearly.  I shan't need this anyway, Steve, but no doubt some will.

Of course it might just be something daft at my end, but I thought it worth mentioning.   :)

Yes from Bridgeyate? The idea with Paypal is you download from the website. But I tried riding (Org pre-ride) the 200 today from the download and it appeared truncated at about 70km, so not much good. Is that the problem with the website only accepting zipped files.  Best you check the downloads and notify on normal email, so I can send my unaltered version. Couple improvements to the 200 RS; new version will be dated 3 Mar 2012 in sub-title.

Hope that is clear.

Yes but be quick please, as I am just about to order Cards.

I will accept EOL but please notify email if you know you intend to ride, so I can bring docs and avoid your delay.  Also need to notify Controls for food!

Route has changed considerably for this year. Flows much better and through even better scenery; of course I am biased but also blessed with great countryside on my doorstep.  Suggest you ride it again!

OK.  Just downloaded updated (3 Mar 12) Routesheet (minor changes to text but not route) and Info on AUK website and .tcx version of my track from last week.  The zipped gps exchange version may not work - did not for me! So if in doubt email me and I can send the full version.

Lanes in the Vale of Pewsey were a bit muddy yesterday and I hit them when they were wet (yes it was also raining), so guards could be useful.

Well I'm looking forward to this. I hope there is a worthwhile field for this as after Ron had called time it could have just disappeared had Steve not stepped up.

60 so far on the 200 and 29 on the 150, so total is good. Disappointed with the Flyer take up (previous av 82) but I am sure reports on the route will remind folk of the great country in these parts. It is already available as a Perm (that is how I route proved).
