or even this year

Its already fully booked for this year (all 15000+ places!).
It looks like good fun - I considered entering it this year, but I think I might be a bit busy then. I'm planning a big tour in Sweden later in the year instead.

I think I might enter it next year.
And why not ride both Vatterundan and LEL? There's over a month between them.

I considered this, but ended up not entering as I have stuff on around then.

Stockholm to Göteborg sounds fun, but the 30 hour time limit for 550K is putting me off.
http://ultracyclingsweden.com/sthgbg.htm

I really must get myself sorted out and on to some Swedish rides - I'm over there for a few days every couple of weeks.

Starting at 20.06 on my 5th Vatternrundan  :D
This year I'm riding slowly, my guess will be +15 hours and enjoying the ride.

Stockholm - Göteborg in under 30 hours  :-X
9 days out of 10 it will be headwind all 550 km

Good luck to you Gus! Wish I had the time.

If any one here like to do this event you will be able to find lots of people selling their start numbers! Just take a look in the official forum, other Swedish cycling forums or get to the start area a day in advance an look around! Pm me for websites and more info! The longer you wait the lower the prices drops...

Hmm. Registrations for 2009 open on 01 September.

Hmm. How easy is it to find accommodation within a sensible distance of the start?

Hmm.

I'm planning on riding there and sleeping in the gym the night before and after

You could try Campanile and the other euro-hotel chains although if the 1100 Skr entry fee is anything to go by.....

If you bring a tent, very easy, they have  a couple of  areas close to start
that are converted into  camping areas
There are several other possibilities , check the Vatternrundt forum,
I think half the city have their house or apartment for rent on that forum.
There are 3 or 4 hotels in the city and a couple of hostels.

And the Gym as martin says

SAS to Linköping from LHR gives about 50K to Motala, which seems more reasonable, though (as we've discussed before) SAS aren't cheap.
I'm a bit confused that it doesn't appear possible to book that flight using SAS Eurobonus points (which would make it free except for taxes), I must ask customer services about that.

I would suggest The Swedish Tourist Association - Svenska Turistföreningen if you want accommodation at a fair price.

Registration for the 2009 Vätternrundan have opened today.
But take your time, normally all 17.500 places won't be gone until new year.  ;)

Entered  I asked for a post 02.30 start time which I assume means riding in mostly daylight.

Still cogitating flights....

riding after 02.30 means you dont need light on your bike.
It might be dawn the first 1/2 hour.

We entered last week (00.30 start-time) and booked the ferry today- Harwich Esbjerg.
We're going to have 2 weeks touring in Sweden.
Now we need to find accommodation in the Motala area* and then plan the itinerary for the rest of the trip.

*Apart from the usual tourist info places, any suggestions please ?

There's a campsite / gym in Motala which I'll be using; try the Forum on the website it seems to be picking up on various topics, I assume they all speak English.

Shouldn't be a problem to go below 12h, all the faster groups are after 2.50am and there are plenty of food and only few hills.
Not to forget a free beer when you finish.

This years ride is fully booked; 18.700 participants  :o.

I'm going to ride from my home to the start and back again, visiting some family along the route.
So the 300 km ride develops into a 1200 km/ 2 week tour.

You are allowed to bring your own luggage on the Swedish trains (you carry it on yourself and place it at either end of the carriage or on a shelf overhead) so if you pack your bike in a box or flight case there shouldn´t be a problem. And if someone asks what´s in your large suitcase, it is of course a piano or all your winter clothing... ;)

Regarding starting times: You will need to use lights and reflectors (not sure if this this is the correct word in english, called "reflexer" in swedish), white forward, red backward, and yellow to the sides, if you start before 2:50 am. It used to be that a "late start" automatically meant no lights needed but as of last year,I think, "late start" means after 2:30. (Just don´t want you to be unaware of this as there is a lights check at the start)

Also: There are actually a couple of chartered trains between Stockholm-Motala and Göteborg (Gothenburg)-Motala where you live onboard during the stay in Motala. They are run by two separate cycling clubs and usually fill up quickly but they might be a convenient sollution. Stockholm-Motala run by Fredrikshof cykelklubb Hem - Fredrikshof
Gothenburg-Motala run by Lygnens Vänner Lygnens Venner - Den glada cykelklubben

I really don't know if anyone is interested in finding out about the trains, but since I started writing about them...

So if you wish to contact the clubs I mentioned and can't figure out the swedish words, you should look for "E-post" on the Gothenburg site and under "Kontakt" and "ordforande" on the Stockholm site.

I've just checked and I'm going to start 20,20.

you have to look under "Start time & results"
Scroll down to Vätternrundan 2009 and enter your name
then press enter and see what happens.
