The Internet appears to have temporarily slowed down...

Unless times have changed 'approx 3 hours remaining' means anything between one second and the rest of your life to go.  ;D
It's a reverse Elvis thing.

Both of mine have managed to reach the 'preparing update' stage - we'll see if they succeed.
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

Mine is going fine, updating firmware, five minutes max I reckon. A pleasant surprise, as I thought my iPhone 4 had been left behind on this one.

No, my 3GS has been, but all the more recent ones are OK.
I wonder what's happening to my iPad upstairs

Through BT's finest Essex hi-speed steam-driven broadband, about 17 hours remaining.

In a hotel whose internet connection is one of those ones that forgets to load the CSS files every now and then.

Won't risk the update.
It is simpler than it looks.

Idiots at Apple time the release badly. If they had done it at 10:00am CET then all of Europe would have updated before the US woke up spreading the load. As it it is 7:00pm CET means that Europe and the US update at the same time.
My iPad has managed to update though. The new interface is mainly quite good but a tad bright in some areas. I think  its the green icons that are particularly eye watering.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I assume Apple wants the cyber equivalent of people queueing around the block to buy the latest i-thing. Adds to the "excitement".

Of course the pile-up generates publicity, it's just a case of balancing desire with frustration. And, to be fair, there's always going to be an issue. If we had a 'national everyone drive down the M1 day' I'd imagine there'd be congestion too.

I was going to wait for a few days, but a message popped up when I plugged in my iPad last night, so I did the deed. Went to make a cup of tea and it was done. I've not bothered with the phone yet.

Initial impressions. It's certainly brighter and airier, masterfully done in a few places. Did the wallpaper always do that? I have a picture of my cat and it freaked me more than usual. The app icons (or whatever they call them these days) don't impress though, the colours are a bit lairy and rounded corners overdone compared to the sharp razor lines and tall Helvetica Neue elsewhere. It may grow on me, but I think they need to turn down the palette a bit and hammer those corners.

It's ok. Different, not better as far as I can tell so far. I've yet to find anything to get excited about!

Indeed - they are getting there with multi-tasking now - finally!

Took a google to work out how to kill an app though - swipe up!

I like the look, it is cleaner for sure.  Folders look a little disappointing as solid blocks of colour.  The dynamic background will presumably use up processing/battery, so I will turn it off when I am bored of it (in around 26 minutes I think).

Other than that, it's primarily cosmetic for the vast majority of stuff I do.
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

Looks a bit Android to me... not sure about that.

Updating apps from the App Store looks to be a bit flaky to me. Not sure what those circular icons mean, downloading or installing? Dropbox update has been hanging for a couple of hours.

The slow update wasn't at the user end it was at Apples end. Millions of people trying to update all at he same time overloading their servers.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Hmm, probably shouldn't have let it loose on my phone. Got to the very end of the install and experienced an error. Progress bar interruptus.

Oh well, I now get to find out just how well a complete restore works.

Not well. Remembered iTunes doesn't play well with the data on my NAS so won't restore because it seems to expect data transfer rates in the realm of quantum spooky instantness. Possibly they have that in Cupertino, I have a powerline adaptor and wifi and data positively dawdles from a to b. Still, it seems like the geniuses behind iTunes are not on the boat where people might use a NAS to host their data.

Now I have to copy 100 GB of library to my computer, sync with that, and then copy the main file back to the NAS. There goes the rest of my evening. Your shit better sparkle, Apple.
