Google maps - is the old maps now defuncked
« on: 09 May, 2014, 09:05:46 pm »
Hi,

I have just gone to look at some links for old maps with route options and all I get is the new maps. I have not upgraded to the new maps and it just looks like the old maps have now gone.

Is this correct or have I done something wrong?

New Google Maps - Just Say No!

Clicky

The article explains how to switch out and why you might want to. It's really not a big deal though. I see very few NGM links, even from new DIYers. Or maybe they all read my notes....

Same old for me - I've never even seen the new version

I have seen the new version, hated it and reverted to the old PDQ.

Reverting to "Classic" Googlemaps:

Clicking on the question mark works fine on my own computer; but on another person's iPad, there wasn't a question mark, and I couldn't get one to appear. Searching for Classic Gmaps failed. Any advice for that situation, please?

Does anyone else get this bug in the new google maps:
* Get directions for a route
* activate streetview
* switch back out of streetview
* try to modify the route

How annoying is that?!

New google maps streetview panning around down the street is much worse anyway.

Can you stop it panning? On the few occasions I've used the new Google Maps StreetView I have been unable to escape from the spin of an unstoppable pan until I close maps.

I used to go dizzy from the uncontrollable spinning on the old google maps, but could never quite figure out what started it off.

I hated the new version at first but it didn't take much perseverence before I got to like it, and I've yet to go dizzy using it.

On new Google Maps I found you can drag the image around using the mouse if you want to get a look at a signpost or other waymark (avoiding the 90 degree only pan if you click the button.  Even so, on the occasion I did get asked for feedback I gave it.  Now use my work computer as its browser software is so anitquarian that it doesn't work with new Google Maps and Google gives me the old version by default.

I'm not a fan of NGM but using google earth inclusing streetview on a modern lappy with touch screen is a revelation. All of a sudden the world is your oyster...
