One for the retro fans.  I've just been to a talk at Superstoker's club by Maurice Burton, former track star.  He owns De Ver Cycles in Croydon, who sponsor the club and a few of their own riders.

He was very interesting and amusing, with his laconic delivery masking some of the very forthright opinions.

A great insight into the world of Six Day racing, particularly.

He told a colleague of mine about the time someone tried to break in to his shop via a skylight. "So I tickled his foot with the machete I kept under the counter and he pulled it back up sharpish"

Didn't look to be. ;D

Actually, Maurice didn't have a bike till he was twelve, it seems, and didn't come from a racing background at all.  He spoke of the difficulty of getting into clubs in the late 60s/early 70s.  He was a rider for VCL, as was Russell Williams a few years later, as it happens.

Maurice's son has got into racing in the last couple of years, and has ridden ten races, of which he has won four (the other six, he only came second).  Jermaine Burton is a name to look out for, I suspect.

So Beryl is not germane to Maurice.

Ok, I have my hat on already.
