Author Topic: 11 speed MTB XT front shifter with road FD on a RWD 2 wheel recumbent?  (Read 1999 times)

Hi - I asked this question on the general forum:

Shimano 11-speed road Front Shifter compatibility with 11-speed MTB shifters?
https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=117561.0

On a RWD two wheeled recumbent (Schlitter Freestyle), which has a long (2.5 times normal length) chain (so in theory the chain angle should never be that steep), would the front shifting be acceptable if using a  11-speed Shimano XT M8000  i-spec II left shifter with a Shimano 105 R7000  front derailleur and 105 R7000 50/34 chainset? Or would it be better to use a road flat bar shifter for the front/left? e.g.  SL-RS700: https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/component/105-5800/SL-RS700.html

I believe you need different pull for road and mtb fd with Shimano.  Not sure but I thought sram is the same for both.

I run friction both front and rear on my recumbent , which is compatible with everything. I see you are getting appropriate responses on your other thread.

I had sucessful shifting on my M5 with a similar setup, it was a 50-34 on the front, 3-sp front shifter was Shimano MTB, can't remember which FD.

Rear was mtb all the way, 11-sp.

I can have a look back through my records if you like?

From my records

Crankset - SRAM Apex 50/34, 175mm cut down by Mike B
Front mech - Ultegra 6700 double
Rear Mech Shimano XT, didn't note specific model
Casette - 11 sp, SXT 11-40
Shifters - paired XT, again didn't note more specifics.
