Cute dogs! (in one case, very big cute dog!)
I'd love a dog, but since I'm at work all day, it's not fair on a dog to leave it alone for that long. I'm too far away to go home at lunchtime, and to be honest, even leaving a dog by itself all morning and afternoon, with a brief walkies at lunchtime doesn't seem fair five days a week.
At least an adult cat can amuse itself (ie sleep!) all day.
Still, keep the dog piccies coming, so I can vicariously enjoy all your dogs!

You'll have to wait for mine. Marley the black Labrador arrives in four weeks.
A Pointer was considered but the Labrador preferred. I did mention the 'Oirish terrier Simonali but when it was mentioned he might look askance if he was asked to fetch sticks, he was rejected. So we've ended up with a very safe choice.
When we went to pick him, we had to wade through tons of certificates about parents health and grandparents health, all in a bid to breed out the eye and hip problems Labs have.
I shall probably be asking advice soon.

In my experience of terriers, he will probably go and fetch sticks happily but will not give you them back ;D

Got it in one!
Once the thrown ball/stick etc leaves your hand, the game immediately changes to 'chasing a dog round a field trying to get chucked thing back again'!

I didn't think my mums terrier was unusual. It's easier if you get other dogs to do the chasing of the terrier for you.
-
He's not daft. If you offer him a biscuit as a swap he'll bring the ball back!

And it would appear this (and the close up of your avatar) may have swung the "what new dog as a friend for Charlie?" decision   It'll be a few months yet, but there was lots of "awww-ing" going on - it's taken long enough! ;D

Good idea, Border Collies are such lovely dogs.
-
I'll give 'em one thing, they stand still for photos. Scruffter (for that is his name) just stands still and poses, whilst Riley arses about. We got loads of shots of a posed collie and a blurred IT!

Thanks. :) I think she is. You can see her black tongue in the first one, which belies her Chow genes...
Having demanded a walk the minute I walked through the door today, Cam is now satisfied and snoring in her bed

Seems to have settled in well :)
This is what makes me sad when I hear of dogs being mistreated - they don't ask for much, do they? Comfortable place to live, food, and walks.

I completely agree. And certainly with all the dogs I've had, you get back way more than you put in. Cam is no exception.
-
I am trying to get Cam to tolerate the family dog, Bernie so we can all stay at my mum's for Xmas.
Unfortunately she doesn't really like him 'in her face' so to speak and growls and barks when he attempts to sniff her whereupon I pull her away to stop things escalating. She would ignore him if she would ignore her but he doesn't want to ignore her...Xmas could be interesting. Both dogs are neutered so it's nothing like that...and Bernie's an old man, bless him.
They can be in the same room together, as this photo illustrates. If they are both on leads. Which is something, but not a long-term solution.
Now I know how my mum felt when I was attempting to kill my sister when we were kids :-\
-
With dogs isn't it all about the relative rank? Presumably if things are going correctly, as far as Cam is concerned you are the pack leader, and presumably for your Mums dog, she is the pack leader. How they then sort things out when you are all together is going to be, erm, more complex I guess.
What little I know about it is that when you introduce a new dog to an existing dog, you have to show them that you are the boss, and they do what you want them to, but how does this work if there are two bosses? (ie you and your Mum)
I think I'll stick with Talisker, he's complex enough to understand. ;D

You should see my hound when he's in "spoilt brat" mode. He's forever asking for stuff. We have these lovely (to him) chewey things which Mrs. Wow buys at the Southend Market on a Thursday. They are kept on a shelf above his bed and he's frequently to be found sitting looking up at them, pointing with his nose, and then squeaking at the nearest person asking them to provide.
We play games with him in which he has to sit in one room and then we hide one in a different room. He then sniffs it out. I sometimes do this with liver cake when we are on walks. He loves it.
-
As I live in a small, high altitude flat I'm not allowed pets, if I was, I'm really a cat person anyway. My parents however love dogs. These are the latest members of the family.
Meet Annie....
and Morgan....
Both very young, and both from rescue centres. Annie is lovely, although she goes berserk when I turn up in riding gear, it must be the h**met. Morgan is very excitable still, and is always jumping up on people. I'm just hoping he'll calm down.

Cam shows some signs of thinking I'm the pack leader. When she growled at him, I told her no and got hold of her, and as I grabbed her she rolled onto her back in the classic submissive pose. Bernie is also submissive to me (I originally trained him when we got him as a naughty rescue dog when I still lived at home, and he does what I tell him to) and she can see this. But she still cannot abide him sniffing her. So she cannot truly believe I am pack leader or she wouldn't dare have a go at him; she'd trust me to protect her. Or so the theory goes. I believe she is what is known as a dominant bitch ::-)
-
And I like the look of Annie and Morgan; I like big dogs.
-
They do look like a smashing pair of dogs. I like cats and dogs, but realistically there's no way I could have a dog like that, it would dismantle the house out of boredom when I was at work. ;D
I'll have to make the best of my insane small black furry friend, who'll take himself off for walks when I'm at work, and also live vicariously through threads like this. :)
-
Ohhhh cuteness. Annie is very sweet. Morgan looks like a handsome brute.

Aww...the little pink paw pads on the first one. She looks lovely.
Have bought the dogs' Xmas presents (large, hard chew-type things that will keep them busy for a small part of Xmas day). I may wrap them if I am feeling silly, the dogs like being given permission to rip stuff open.
Haven't got around to buying any other bugger presents yet, but as long as the dogs are catered for...

I love the first couple of cute puppy pictures. She's certainly grown a bit between those and the last one, her legs look much longer in that one.
That does remind me that I need to get Sam, my brothers thoroughly badly behaved, but lovable Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, some sort of toy that he can chase after on walks. I gained major brownie points a few years back with a small wheel on a rope that he loved to chase after.

We get all our dog toys from Lidl, great selection and the prices are just pennies compared to Sainsbury's etc....tennis balls from the Pound Shop, you can sometimes get 5 in a tube for a pound.
-
I forget that most normal dogs have toys. Bernie doesn't have many toys because of the systematic way in which he destroys them. When we bought him home from the rescue (when I was still living at home) he pounced on the various toys that we had lovingly furnished him with, and one by one, took them apart, ate them and vomited them up. It was just lovely.
(He does still have one to play tug with, but we take it off him when he's not playing tug to stop him eating it)
Cam has a Kong that she is much taken with.

That reminds me of my parents old neighbours dog. She would tear anything up that resembled a dog toy - especially the "tough - resistant to chewing" ones.
She took a shine to a 10kg dumbell one day, and from then on would refuse point blank to sleep anywhere the dumbell wasn't ;D

Those are lovely pictures and he looks like a great dog, Annie.
Cam came to spend Xmas at Bognor and 'tolerated' the family dog Bernie, another rescue (who thought she was just great and wanted to be her friend; the feeling was not quite mutual). The photos are no good really, but give a flavour of her first Xmas with me:
I'll pretend not to notice that filthy blackguard next to me, because someone's given us each a treat.

Brilliant.
I love Airedales. I hope you're not missing her too much.
When I win the lottery, I'll be getting another dog to replace my still missed Westie.
-
An Airedale is no 1 on my list of possible dogs to get this autumn.
-
Thanks Chocolate bike - Bramble she was 15 and had given us so many lovely memories (she could be a holy terror, of course, like all terriers) and we miss her terribly.
The breed is also top of my list if we have another dog, pcolbeck :)
-
I also fancied an Border Collie (I have know a couple of lovely ones) but was advised not to get one as there is a high chance that unless you walk them several hours a day and give them lots of wok to do they can go a bit loopy. The ones I have known were the exceptions that proved the rule it seems. Also I like Irish Terriers but its seems that they can be very aggressive with other dogs and pets (we have a cat and free range chickens) and are much more of a handful than Airedale's. So from my three top dogs it looks like its going to be a big fluffy chap.
-
The Airedale also has a bit of a 'reputation' with other dogs, though, especially, I think, the males. Bramble could be a beast if she took a dislike to something (she was, though, lovely with the cats and the other smaller dogs in the household). I think with any large terrier type, early socialising, a firm hand and, above all, consistent handling is a must.
Having owned a number of breeds (including a couple of border collies), the Airedale was by far the most unruly, bolshie, opinionated, arrogant, hard headed and impossible of them all. But, at the same time, the most loving, amusing, bright, fun and lovable of them all too -I would have another tomorrow (but probably won't as they wouldn't be Bramble :().

My dog's half border collie. He's brilliant, but you mustn't let him get bored, and excercise can be a problem.
To wear him out, I use this:
Cycling lead for dogs (http://www.instructables.com/id/Cycling-lead-for-dogs/)

Morphy is confused.
He has just acquired a ball, which he found in the stream. Balls, as every dog knows, are prized objects to be guarded with one's life. If they are special balls, which one has found all on one's own without the boss's help, then nothing may be allowed to part one from one's newest treasure.
However, as every dog knows, liver cake is the Best Thing On The Planet.
What is a dog to do when presented with the problem of a special ball in one's mouth at the same time as a piece of liver cake balanced on one's nose?
-
Now Morphy didn't put the liver cake on his own nose did he? Some might describe that as cruelty

We don't have a dog for two reasons: Firstly you're only allowed to have welsh border collies if you live here and they'd scoff the cats and, secondly, I don't have the compulsory Land Rover pickup with Ifor Williams canopy for it to live in.

Yay, mad puppy running about-ness. ;D
He looks a good size for 12 weeks and a border terrier, or is it just that he looks big on camera?
I thought border terriers were typically 6-7kg, but he looks quite a bit bigger than Talisker already, whose 3.5kg or so. He does look quite lanky though, so maybe he's big and a bit skinny.

Border Terriers have long legs so height-wise he should be between 13 and 16 inches at the shoulder when he's fully grown.
Currently he's 4.5Kg, almost double what he was 4 weeks ago when we got him.

Last night after half a bottle of wine I decided to begin Google the Cockapoo's hairdo! I just bought some Wahl Pro cordless clippers because Google is a daily swimmer and his coat tends to suddenly matt when it reaches a certain length. It just clumped so badly this week I was embarrassed to take him to the groomers like it
Google tends to be well behaved for approximately half an hour and then gets impatient and grumpy, so I tend to groom him in 2 or 3 sessions. Last night I probably managed to make him look the stupidest he has ever looked! I will do his head, legs and tail today, I can't walk him until I have since this is what he currently looks like ;D

That's an impressive haircut! I had to give up with my Wahl clippers and buy some super-expensive Oster ones as the Wahl just wouldn't do it. poppy now has a number 1 haircut every 10 days; I do her face and feet on a different day as she gets bored with the grooming too, like Google.

Poppy sounds like she has a similar coat and personality to Google :)
I have found daily grooming useless for Google's coat because it's so fine and also curly all it has to do is get wet to form dreadlocks. I have a pond ...

Looks fine to me! Google's a big lad compared to Poppy - is he an English/Miniature?
No, he's a Cockapoo. Mum is a cocker spaniel and dad a miniature poodle.
-
So an English (English cocker spaniel)/Miniature (miniature poodle) then. It's Just that some people use American cockers or toy poodles for the cross, although I imagine they'd be smaller. Poppy is an English Miniature and is 6.25kgs; I know of another English Miniature that's 16kg and not fat, just huuuuuge!

Awww bless her, Poppy is teeny! Google weighs 12kg and has very long legs and big cocker style feet. I think he is bigger than both his parents which is a bit odd.

Just found this thread so have to add our pack
(http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo178/daveyates42/Dogs/DSC04201web.jpg)
This is our old boy Duggie, a 12 year old Welsh Springer. He is never quite sure which way is up and is as deaf as a post but he is happy and still fit and well.
Next is Fergus, another Welsh Springer, 4 years old now but about 2 1/2 when this pic was taken looking supremely smug with all his trophies from working tests.
Max is a Lab / English Springer cross rescue dog so we dont know exactly how old he is, about 2 1/2. Super working dog, he even works for me!!! very fast with an overwhelming desire to please.
Bringing up the rear is Dougal, another Welsh Springer, 6 months old now but about 12 weeks when this was taken

Squidge, my rescue collie cross with Kiri
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v171/feistyfeline/kirisquidge-1.jpg)
This evening I noticed Google was just starting to get some clumps in his armpits (every time his coat gets over 3" long this happens) so I set about fettling him with the clippers. Unfortunately the cordless clippers ran out of juice before I had finished so they are now charging and he looks like this
-
Are you saving that picture of Google to show his first girlfriend?
-
Kai has a clump in one armpit (pawpit?) I wonder if I should take this approach. I don't think he'd approve!
-
I cut Poppy's armpit clumps with some very good scissors I invested in. She's the same breed as Google but I clip her body every 10 days to keep it short (I like it like that), whereas most Cockapoos round here are really shaggy. It's too difficult to do her armpits with the clippers (and she doesn't allow it either, trying to bite the clippers!) so I have the scissors for that - and for her face.

The problem I have with Google is he swims every single day on his walk, and his fur is so fine it doesn't dry out for hours resulting in clumping. He seems to think that his head needs to be under the water to drink too
It would probably be much better if I ran the clippers over him regularly with a fairly long attachment on them, but invariably I let him go to far when I try and end up having to make him look like this:

Oooo I looked at that as an idea for taking Astra with me...how big a dog would you say it would take? How is it to ride with? :)
-
It's easy to ride with on a trike but she shifts around a lot which would be strange on an upright bike I think.
Loads of people in Germany have dogs on bikes - that's where I bought the basket. It's rated to 12kg but Poppy is only 6.5.

The new man in our lives.
His name is Jack and he's a 9 month old Jack Russell (not the most creative name, I know, but we didn't name him).
We picked him up from Wood Green Animal shelter earlier today and he's beginning to settle in...
-
He looks very nice, Greg! Jack Russells are the best. Hope he settles in well :)
-
He looks a fine little chap. Is he smooth haired? All of the Jack Russels I've ever known have had a rougher coat.
He's going to need a lot of exercise and possible some obedience classes. Good luck with him, he should make a fine companion. I like Jack Russels, they seem to be small, but very energetic and smart dogs.
-
Congratulations on the new dog, Reg. He looks very alert and switched on, and cute!

I've always liked Jack Russells. Jon wanted some pure breed spaniel type thing - but I presuaded him otherwise.

He's described as 'brindle coated' but he seems fairly smooth - but he's also moulting like mad at the moment. There's dog hair everywhere!
He's due to have his knackers off in a couple of weeks, at which time he should calm down a bit - and then he'll be ready for some obedience training.
He had his first day on his own today - it was only 5½ hours but he coped OK. There were no messes waiting when I got home, although he went straight into the garden and marked everything in sight... ;D
-

He’ll moult like mad most of the time, if our ones were any guide!
That’s pretty good that he’s ok on his own - a big worry when considering getting a dog.

Jack is not a happy boy...
He's off to the vet today and he's had nothing to eat or drink. He had a short walk this morning, when he wasn't allowed off the lead in case he found something to eat, and now he's sitting staring at me with an accusing look as I haven't fed him (he normally gets fed after his morning walk).
He won't be happy with me when he finds out what's happening later! He'll be coming back from the vet minus two things he is very fond of.

Not happy?
I'd be bloody furious if I was taken out for a ride in the car and came back a several of hours later with an unemployed tongue :o

We've tried him without it - but he insists on licking the wound. So the Cone of Shame has to stay...

Do they flavour tablets for dogs with anything?
Jack's on Metacam and he wolfs them down - no problems.
-
He is such a cute little chap. I am sure he is plotting to get revenge for the loss of his crown jewels once he gets that cone off.
Adorable though.

Yes. They are reputed to be 'palatable' for dogs. In my house that is a broad term that would include any thing in my fridge along with anything even vaguely edible. The TV remote control would also qualify.

He is quite happy chasing tennis balls around the kitchen floor.... but utterly ignores balls and sticks thrown for him when we go out.
I keep trying but 50+ year old bloke running after tennis balls on a field while small puppy looks on with "watcha doing that for then?" expression is .... how can I put this? .... undignified ?
Yes I know I look sillier dressed in lycra but....

Awwww I bet Google would love Poppy. He would probably be a bit too big and bouncy to be an acceptable boyfriend for her though!
-
She would be all submissive for the first five mins (if he were smaller she'd be super-bossy) and then would run around quite happily with him. She can be rather feisty if the mood takes her.
The photo on the stairs would have been so much better with a proper camera. I just found her with her head resting between the spindles and it was such a great shot, but my iPhone camera is pants!

I can't get good pics of Squidge with my iPhone camera because she is mostly black and always comes out looking 'flat' or out of focus. Simons very nice digital Canon SLR seems to do the trick though, I finally have some great pics of the 2 dogs together

When I was a kid I had a muppets album with a different setting of the song. Which I still sing to myself quite often. And to the dog as she has a tendency to sleep on the stairs so she can keep an eye on everything...

I've become a dog owner, much to the surprise of everyone who knows me. I know virtually nothing about dogs, but he seems to have taken to me and me to him. Polly on the other hand has owned three border collies that have spanned most of her life.
He's an 18 month old border collie who belonged to neighbour of ours in France who's moving away for work and will be living in a flat.

Awww CptBob he is a real looker! He looks really intelligent too
And he speaks French! We're working on his English otherwise I'm going to look a bit pretentious in Horsham park giving him French instructions. Polly's taught him to cock his leg on command which he does until I presume he's run out. Quite handy to get that out of the way if you're wandering round a market.
-
Astra has been trained in Swedish. Our first dog was acquired while living in Sweden, so naturally I did puppy classes etc there and learned the Swedish commands. When I got Astra, I didn't want to go through the confusion of trying to retrain myself and potentially get confused, so I stuck to the commands I knew. I figured it'd make her unstealable, but she's actually too friendly for that to work...but at least I can prove she's mine quickly and effectively!
-
People have said it's tone of voice, but he seems to ignore "come here" totally, but responds immediately to "viens ici". He's had his rabies jab, so we'll be able to bring him home on Monday week. At least walking the dog is something I will be able to do whilst I'm off the bike.
-
Squidge likes to lie down with her ball for a little rest on her walks. She doesnt give a sh*t if it's muddy ;D

At least Google is colour coordinated with mud!
Do you have to plonk them in the bath and wash them down with a shower attachment, when they come in that colour? I've had to do that with my brothers daft spaniel.
I've used a hose on a dog in the back garden in the past, on a hot sunny day, but that has the disadvantage of generating more mud if they're sat on the grass, so can be self perpetuating!

I have to admit that my immediate response to teh mud-beasties was to walk a few yards to the reservoir and throw the ball into 5 foot deep water for them to retrieve :demon:
You're not really meant to swim in the reservoir, but the swans shit in there and the yacht club members fall in there plus it's pretty mahoosive so I figure that any pollution I am causing is pretty diluted!
-
I used to sail in a reservoir. The launching/landing area was covered with goose shit. :hand:
-
When I can no longer see Astra's white feet, she gets shoved in the bath upstairs. This is the only time she is allowed upstairs at all.
If she's rolled in fox-poo, she gets hosed off in the front drive...regardless of the weather/temperature. If she's that stupid, she can suffer the consequences! ;D
-
What fun I have ahead of me. I'll keep the hose pipe handy.

We visited a lion and cheetah rescue farm near Johannesburg on Saturday. The owner also rescues dachshunds which have the general run of the place.

Excellent photo ;D
We had a fox terrier that used to sit like that, in the corner of the sofa. That's the position he would assume as soon as he jumped up.

My dog is bilingual as well. My wife is French, so the dog understands English and French. It's quite amusing when we're out.

He's settled down with us now, it took him a few months though. The French thing was funny though - the first time we went back to France we went into a bar and you could see him do a double take when confronted with a few people all talking away in French. When we first had him he just wouldn't "come here". He gave a gallic shrug and just looked. Perhaps it was my lack of sausage.
-
Lack of sausage!!? :o Someone had to say it and, bloody hell, you're posh. We can't afford violins. We use logs for our fire!

Haven't had any pictures of Poppy for a bit so here you go.

Bella and Hudson enjoyed a game of fetch. At least upto a point as far as dear old Hudson was concerned. Up against a whippet he didn't stand a chance of retrieving that ball.

Getting bigger by the day - vet reckons he's going to be a big lad!
He and the existing hound have made friends. She spends hours playing tug-of-war with him and he looks to her for reassurance almost as much as he does his humans. He's still pretty nervous of new people, but he talks Dog really well. Looking forward to the being able to take him out for a Proper Dog Walk in the woods soon!

I didn't get pics (sorry!) cos it was a bit manic round the Den this afternoon as the Clan converged for lunch, but we got a dog visit for the first time in YEARS. Hattie (the bonkers lab/jack russell cross) has discovered a fondness for quiche and sweet potato crisps, and Amos was a little sweetheart, completely unphased by all the people and excitement, and didn't pee in any inappropriate places, which is about the minimum standard of behaviour that I'd expect from visitors.
(Those who have visited the Den can possibly imagine the kind of chaos ensuing from 9 people and two dogs in our living room. Although there were only 3 solo bikes and one tandem in the room, so it wasn't _too_ crowded).
-
Sorry to hear about Foss, and Amos looks a lovely chap.
Now … here's another one: Cuca (pronounced either Koo Cha or Choo Sha) we found in Portugal. Sadly, he was already owned. Had he been one of the many strays, we'd have scooped him up and looked at getting him back home with us. What a sweetie.

This is the (soon to be) new addition to our family, a very handsome male fox red labrador puppy (9 weeks old). Chosen yesterday and hopefully coming home in a few days. Currently un-named but he is probably going to be Rufus.

It seems that doing the school run was really quite exhausting for one of them... well, so many exciting new people to meet and greet, such a lot of new smells. And then, back at the Den, a new sofa to invade.

Apparently dogs don't like to sleep on their backs
Never heard that, but if that is true, they haven't seen our Tilley or my late Zitta. Plenty of belly shown and good amount of snoring too.
-
It is probably because in a dog's back the spinous process of the vertebrae is proud of the surrounding ribs and muscle, so what they lie on their backs (on a hard surface) this is painful. In humans the spinous process is generally protected by ribs and muscle on either side of the spine. It is the lumpy bits you feel when you run your hand down someone's back.
-
Who's that beauty? :D
She is Misty - my Mum's four-legged - and she is bee-yooo-ti-ful in appearance and also temperament. My Mum still can't quite believe her luck, even though she's had her for a year or so now!

May I introduce Finn. He is a rescue dog and we know nothing about his past. He's one year old, a Lurcher. He's fitted in to our family immediately. No accidents in the house, no scratching at doors, sleeps in his bed downstairs at night. He has been a lovely blessing on us so far, three weeks in to ownership. We're now thinking of a DoggyRide so we can take him touring with us.

Missed this while on tour. What a lovely dog. Hello Finn :)
-
He is lovely. Lots of feet.
-
We've been training him to return on call. Lots of treats. Watching him run is a delight - he was made to run. It is also funny when he meets a greyhound, which can run faster than him... and seems to completely bamboozle him; "How are you keeping up with me!?!"
He is clearly still a pup; seeking attention and thinks that anyone going to the kitchen is going to get him a treat. Natural born scrounger.

Gorgeous Finn. Lurchers are fab dogs (and skilled counters surfers!).
We're awaiting a new foster pup: 4 month old Ruby from the streets of Romania. He arrives tomorrow. His sibling, Snow, is being adopted by our friend in Gargrave.
-
That's WATER?!
I thought she was standing on a towel :o
As a matter of fact she is standing on a towel. A white one. Can't you see it? :-S
-
If attention-seeking is a yardstick, our 11-year-old setter is still a pup.
-
With spring having arrived, I thought it was time for a hike up the aptly named Dog Mountain.
Except spring was also taking an easter break and winter was back!..Or should I say, since we didn't really get any snow this season...had overslept badly!

It was tough going for me at least, but Hana is so much more athletic now and was clearly more than up for the challenge.

Went to Alnmouth today, caught the train from Durham. Finn had a good run along the beach and in most of the photos he's only a blur. I liked this one of him in action on the sand, but also the second of him asleep on the train - although he sneaked a peak when I stuck the camera up his nose...

My mum, who is really not a dog person, is totally smitten. I suspect that might change when the novelty value/cute puppy factor wear off!
Smashing. Always fancied one of those. Terriers are ace.
We chose a terrier based on size and temperament, but an added bonus is that he can earn his keep by doing his bit to control the local rabbit and rodent population too (when he's a bit bigger and has had all his jabs).
