Title: glampers coming out thread
Post by: alecstilleyedye on 30 June, 2011, 06:48:27 pm
this is the thread to own up to namby pamby glamping credentials. you might not be a fully paid up member, but we all have our dirty secrets…

i'll start with:
• a very expensive tent (excuse, we have small children and a tent that erects in seconds is priceless)
• tent carpet (well we have got a toddler)
• electric hookup (but no tv, honest, just for the leccy coolbag and occasional fan heater)
• we have decent cooking facilities (big family etc)
• we drink wine

i feel quite dirty now  ;D

There must be some sort of sliding scale... how far do you have to be up it to be considered a glamper?
Some bus shelter frequenting hardened audaxers probably think that sleeping in a bag in a tent on a mat is glamping  ;D

When I went on a dig for the first time (three weeks in a tent), I made myself a rotary washing line out of an old umbrella with the fabric taken off, and fishing line threaded through the joints...  It worked for pants etc...

One day, I'll make the thing I'd really like - again on an umbrella principle, a three tier cake stand....

Personally, I am not fan of 'glamping' at all, the more so if one uses the excuse of a family for being a 'glamper'. You can do proper camping with a 'big' family (I am talking of 3 kids under 4 + a set of parents) on two bicycles and a trailer (yup, talking about my own three kids and, yes, we have a set of twins). Of course you need a decent/expensive tent because it needs be light weight (!) but the rest of stuff is just bollocks unnecessary, IMO (well, part from drinking wine  ::-)).

I've been glamping last year (tent with pine double bed and wood-burning stove) but I still prefer wild camping with drinking and washing in burns.

I've also slept in a bus shelter twice in the last month ;)

We've always taken a rug to put by the entrance to the tent and we did this long before "glamping" was heard of. Makes the place feel homely.

We also drink red wine. With the absence of anywhere to cool white wine or beer it's the obvious choice.

OTOH, I cook for a family of 4 with a single Trangia .

However, that has all gone out of the window now we have a camper van ;D.

MMM you really need to consider different time zones, e.g. pre kids, kids and post kids it makes a world of difference.

My name's Dan and i'm a glampaholic.
Huge tent with side annex.
Electric hook up.
Electric cool box.
Portable DVD player.
Tent carpet.
Gazebo.
Double burner with grill.
Wine... And beer!
Coffee table...

Glad to get that off my chest.

Just a wild guess, you don't go hiking in remote areas far away from roads  ;)

Barakta and I own an assortment of glamping equipment.  There's even a table that I molished using woodwork.  Also, we part-own a ginormous tent, which disappeared in mysterious circumstances.

However, we lack the critical item - the motor vehicle - that makes most of the rest useful.

Lightweight's much more fun.

easy tiger! if i had the luxury of a wife who loved cycling too, and only 3 kids all young enough to be happy with whatever, i might well do as you do. however, mrs alec is no cyclist, neither is dd1, who is also a stroppy teen. i could certainly go camping with my two sons with me and the eldest on bikes and the younger in the burley trailer with the tent, but life isn't like that is it?
come back when your kids are as old as mine and tell me i'm a decadent glamper…

The last time we camped we used a cotton tent with enough height to stand up in,camp beds, breathable groundshee(rather like tjick underlay with a lorra lorra tiny holes),chairs, table, sink, kitchen shelves, electric hook up for lights, cool box....
'twas but an easy step up to a caravan in terms of bells & whistles.

Mr R insisted on buying a five man tent with porch.  We also have chairs and a table.  I have a camping bed.

We only use this set up when car camping.

There are only two of us  :-[

Guilty as charged.
Bell tent - check
Colourful throws - check
Fire bowl - check
Carpet - check

But, we did take it to Skye and get it blown flat in a near hurricane force gale!
To be fair, half the campsite spent the night in their cars!!

I've also got a tiddly tent for solo efforts and kids who just aren't interested at the moment. Later we might well buy a couple of small tents and do it that way, but for now this is how we camp. We also do a lot of farm camping, so it's nice to have a decent tent and very basic conditions at the site.

For truth.

I'm notoriously shit about taking too much kit.  At York, I still had four panniers and a barbag.  But cycle touring imposes a theoretical top limit on the amount of cack you end up taking and in my case, that is A Good Thing.

A definite glamper here:

- v expensive (and heavy) Cabanon Guadeloupe tent
- kitchen!
- stove with 2 rings and a grill
- beds:
   - 1x inflatable double
   - 1x camp bed
   - 1x inflatable single
- tables (x2)
- 4 chairs
- awning
- 2 gas lamps
- carpet
- rugs
- lotsa, lotsa wine
- lots, lots more

We will not, however, do electric hookups -- that's just wrong.

Here we are setting up in Bedoin in May. Note that the tent is not blue. Blue tents are an abomination.

Bollocks. Quite frankly. Everyone has different constraints/needs. I'm pretty certain you take stuff which is not absolutely necessary when you camp, stuff which 'proper' campers would deem unnecessary.

6 person tunnel tent, where the sleeping compartments take up 1/3rd of the space, plus a porch that adds another 3rd (if it rains at Mildenhall, I suspect there's able room for everyone to hang out in our tent). Coffee table, enough fold out seats to host another family, twin burner and trangia, vegetable/storage rack, double campbed with integrated air mattress...

In our defence, we went camping when my wife was 7 months pregnant, and it's all her kit. We'd like some lightweight kit too.

I hate car mass camping. the sort of camping where the packing takes an hour, you have everything, but it's still not as comfy as sitting at home.

Now I was *really* impressed by Kim's camping at the rally. She seemed to have almost no luggage on her bent yet still produced a sizeable tent, full trangia *and* a folding stool. Seemed mighty suspicious to me, I think she's been messing with Strange Science and her panniers are larger on the inside than out.

It's not about being as comfy as at home. It's about being outdoors, in a nice location, on holiday without costing an arm and a leg.

We can go on holiday to Europe as a family of 4 and the pitch cost for 2 1/2 weeks costs the same as what a 2 bed apartment costs for a week plus the kids get to play with other kids on the site.
It gives us more money to spend on other things like ice cream.

I think we're all getting mixed up here.

Glamping is not camping! Its style over substance; form over function, something for the doyennes of those glossy magazines to demonstrate that they are still 'real' and can doss with the proles.

Sometimes I take my small one man tent on the bike with panniers, other times I take my folding camper for longer holidays with the family with a degree of comfort. Neither of these options is glamping. Its just matching my set-up for the activity on the day. I'm not doing it to show-off, just to have fun.

probably as good a definition as we'll get. so, by that definition, my vango airbeam is not glamping as we got it for the fact that we have a baby and it will stop us having to pass her on to the bored teen while mrs alec and i put up tent, with our 8 year old disappearing while our backs are turned.

i suppose if i'd bought it to show off, that would be glamping then…

Yebbut, you take a STOOL!

Because I can't sit cross-legged - I like being able to walk/ride the next day.  It's not like it's one of those three-wheeled armchairs or anything  :P

Anyway, the definition of lightweight is clear: if you're carrying it under your own power, it's lightweight.
