Do water filters change the taste of council pop?
Here, in the far West of the West Midlands the water is hard and shower heads and kettles scale up very quickly.
On top of that the water tastes horrible to drink and that I'd like to change. Is that possible with hard water?

Yes they might, as they'll be removing certain things from the water, mainly the chlorine (which if you stood the water for a few hours would natuarally gas off anyway.). Not all remove "hardness" salts though - in fact I'm sure most won't. You could, I suppose, fit a deioising cylinder (resin filled, disposable, oft sold by car detailing suppliers) but I think it's prohibitively expensive even if jus used for drinking water. Don't use a softener on drinking water supplies - there's far too much sodium in the water after sotening.

We live very near the water tower so seem to have masses of chemicals, presumably so at the extreme end of the network they retain enough? Anyway running a bath sometimes smells like a swimming pool, not often but it's nasty, drinking water from the tap is unpleasant at best!
We have one of these under the sink:- https://www.toolstation.com/water-filter/p84582 I didn't use the self cutting tap and have an isolator for when we go away as the idea of mains pressure water in a plastic flexi pipe is a niggling worry, but I have no room to plumb in a separate filter so it'll have to do, new filters needs running for a few minutes into a clear glass until the loose carbon flushes out. A cartridge lasts about a year here, 2 of us and it's only on the kitchen tap (toothpaste hides the taste in the bathroom) https://www.toolstation.com/water-filter-cartridge/p10004

Thanks for that neilrj. I'd spotted the BWT at Screwfix and it is a similar system to Toolstation's.
I have a decorator in at the moment and he had a £300 Brita system installed 10 years ago, which he has been happy with, but he cannot get cartridges for it anymore because they have changed the fitting.
I will go for the Screwfix system, I think.

Had the 70 quid Screwfix BWT system fitted today.
The water tastes much better and doesn't smell.
