Hi there YACF gang. Long time no type. Have been a bit distant from all things cycling for quite some years now but at that point now where I'd like to be strong with the cycling force once again ;D. Please let me know if there is anything going on in the Essex and surrounding areas if you would where I can join in some rides and gatherings in due course and of course, a big shout out to contacts old and new!

Hello Macleach, how's it going?
Take a look in the Rides and Touring (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=4.0) board for the Mid-Essex Mid-Week Nocturnal Series (Wednesday evening pub rides) also ACME (Audax Club Mid-Essex) rides. Might be something there that is suitable for you?
-
ACME has an upcoming 200 (Essex RnR) and 100 (A little Essex RnR) I've doen the little version a few times, in both directions and it's a great ride, though last year's summer edition was by far the wettest I've been on a bike in a long time - I could just about see my feet and my Garmin on the recumbent, and had to empty the sleeves of my waterproof (in theory) a few times.
But as we're heading into a summer heatwave, what could posibly go wrong ;D
-
The Hopstock events on 20th August from Littley Green, near Chelmsford - 50km, 120 and 200km versions coinciding with a beer festival.
-
Sounds great folks, thank you, look forward to catching up at some point. :)
-
Did Santa deliver that for which you asked? ;)
I've not organised any rides for quite a long time, for varying reasons, and now have electric assistance on my normal ride. But if there's an event in Essex I suppose I occasionally ought to make the effort to get there. It's just that the ACME lot tend to meet in distant hostelries at night and I'm out of the habit of regular 50 milers.
But welcome back!

Good lord. I think I may've been on that ride.

Hi Baggers and Jurek, nice to hear from you. Yeah, I did enjoy that ride I have to say. These days I think I'd like Santa to bring me a bit of peace and quiet ;)!

I have a 5lb lump hammer... ;)
I'm sure there must be a report on the ride, but an initial search left me stumped.
Lunch was in the Black Lion, High Roding, but that hasn't helped me much.
-
That's very kind indeed but not necessary ;). I think the ride report has been lost somewhere in the ether. The Viper is closed for repairs these days by the look of it. Cricketers still going mind.

Given when the ride took place, I think it was probably posted on a different forum.

Really? That's quite alarming...

Really? That's quite alarming...
It was a long time ago, maybe my second or third ride with YACF. I hardly knew anybody. I remember sprinting with Macleach to the pub. I don't remember who won. Which probably means that I lost.
-
MACLEACH!!!!
How the hell are you?

Can you recall who organised it?

I can't specifically, but it may've been your good self.
-
Yep, I think it was you Wow. We kicked off at Shenfield station, then McGarrys Antiques and tea shop in Blackmore, then the Black Lion, then one near Ingatestone on the way back and I think I broke for home before the crowd went to the Viper. It was 2007, June for Midsummer I believe. You remember those you see, good times with good folks :)

I can't remember either. I expect you stand a good chance of winning now, I need "de-industrial sizing" again. ;D

All the better for hearing from you lovely lady. One day we must catch up over strawberry laces and Irn Bru chews and I'll tell you a tale or two. ;)

Was my son-in-law with us? He came on one ride. Someone lent him some chain lube somewhere near Highwood Church.
That may have been the ride that when we arrived at the Viper, Bob & Erron were well into their umpteenth pint, having set off from Chelmsford on what was supposed to be a multi-day tour. I think it may have ended in the Viper.
Edit: I have found some photos of a High Roding ride that My Dear Wife and I did in May 2007. That also involved the Viper. Tellingly, I have two photographs of the menu board at the Black Lion, and I would only have done that in anticipation of another ride. Annoyingly, I have no photos from the other ride. But, as Jurek says, it was much longer ago than I thought and would have been pre-YACF.

I'm sure it was the one you mention Wowbagger. That nice young couple with the tandem came along with us (v sorry forget their names), and Annie too. I believe the pics were posted to the original Cycling Plus forum in those days.

It would have been ACF. I was never a member of Cycling Plus. I joined ACF in 2006.

Of course, yes. I must have definitely lost count of the various splinter groups ! "Judean Peoples Front" and all that ;D
-
I have a recollection that Delthebike was on the ride in question, and provided the photos. He';s still occasionally here or hereabouts so hopefully at some point he will look in.
And I'm trying to remember whether I did the ride on my solo or with Jan on the tandem - or were Jan and I were lovely young couple that MacLeach was referring to?
-
However, none of this addresses MacLeach's desire for miles and orange juice! I think we need to organise something.
Where's a convenient starting point for you, MacLeach?

I think you were solo that day. But definitely not ruling you both out as the nice young couple. Possible bit of senior moment actually or "Mandela syndrome" (I believe its called where you mis-remember stuff about a past event) but may have possibly been thinking of the Dun Run with the tandem riding couple.
Anyhow, anywhere is pretty much a viable start point for me Mr W. Eschew the beer pretty much so have car, will travel with or on bike if required. John O' Groats or Land's End could possibly be stretching my abilities however ;)

Was it perchance the mid summer christmas ride?

Defo tandem.
Waiting for Jurek to fix his puncture immediately after 11ses.

Jurek selfishly delays the ride, however it was less of a delay than the time he forgot to bring his bike lock key!

Hi again Del, yep, my memory is even more shocking than I imagined ;D!! That surely isn't me in the photo, it appears to be of young, thin bloke with dark hair (well, actual hair in fact) ;D ;D.
I suppose I could attempt the emaciation again over a number of years, sadly all is lost for the hair these days but I don't mind being a silver fox !
Thanks for posting those up and nice to hear from you.
