Title: More nominative determinism
Post by: mercury on 19 June, 2008, 06:55:53 pm
1. I know someone whose hobby is standing at the edge of Heathrow Airport with a hand-held telescope, camera and notepad. He also goes to air shows and takes more plane pictures. What's his occupation? Visual air traffic controller at the top of the tower in the middle of Heathrow. Heh! How about that?

2. My Mum once got a letter from someone at the then Inland Revenue called Mrs Goldsacks.

3. Yesterday I was in Slough Library when I came across The Navy List, a book containing the names of all the ships and officers in the Royal Navy. In there was someone called Goodship.

Any more examples of people with nifty hobby/name/occupation associations?

Some among us may remember the summers of '75 and '76. It was hot and there were droughts... Thomson and Lille wreaked havoc in the Prudential Cup. Tarmac melted. Rail lines buckled.

I remember reading a piece in the Leeds local Rag about a woman advertising that she had received a letter from the Leeds water (and sewage) board to the effect that it had been noticed that she was flushing her toilet too many times a day and could she please be cognisant of the water shortage and try to moderate her toilet flush usage - the letter was signed by a Mr R Sole....

Private Eye used oft to cite a firm of lawyers named Sue, Grabbit and Runne.

We had a priest at school called Fr (or Doctor, as he was so learned) Hackett - specialist in Reformation history, advisor to Pinewood movies on the subject and also discovered that Cambridge was in fact an older university than Oxford.  Also a staunch Carlisle United supporter - for some reason.

Though I gather that in his spare time he was a keen amateur gynaecologist.

Eddie Mair had the rare honour of interviewing one of the Commissioners in charge of this project, one Scott Wiener (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Wiener). Our Eddie did a much better job of covering his amusement than a certain James Naughtie did so famously when he interviewed Jeremy Hunt a few months ago.

Father Stephen Wang, dean of studies at Allen Hall Seminary, says it is a sacrifice that many priests manage. "It's possible when people have an inner maturity and the faith and support structures are in place." For him it is no different to the challenge of a husband trying to be faithful to his wife.

There is no celibacy get-out in the form of masturbation, says Wang. "For every Christian, masturbation, sex before marriage and sex outside marriage are wrong and something you shouldn't be doing.

"Masturbation is forbidden for every Catholic. The reason is that it makes us more selfish, more introverted and less able to open your heart in love to other people."

Of course, there are many millions of Christians who would disagree with Wang's position.

Once had offices overlooking a cemetery.  The name on the side of the grave-digging JCB-lookalike was Lecreux, a creux being a hole or hollow.

That was quite a place, incidentally. The cemetery was vast, so the personnel used light motorbikes to move around. The foreman had only one leg, but with his crutches he could move at a hell of a rate - six-foot strides, just about.  When there was a funeral the JCB would dig the hole then retreat about 10 yards, then advance again after the service to fill in.  I once noticed that they hadn't bothered to cut the engine in between.

Massive dust storms can whip particles up into the Martian atmosphere and turn the entire planet hazy. But there are other dust layers that don't seem to be related to large storms, say Nicholas Heavens.

The school doctor at a well-known English public school in the 70s, 80s and 90s was a Dr Dick Butcher  :o

It was traditional on British merchant vessels to call the cook Doc, and the Doc (if there was one), Cook.

I think a doctor would only have been present on a passenger carrying ship (and then probably only the large ones) so for most ships the only person on board who had any knowledge of how living things work would have been the cook, as he would have to chop up the meat. He therefore became responsible for fixing up the crew when they were injured.

(They weren't always any good. When my father mashed his hand in [I think] Calcutta and showed it to 'Doc', Doc fainted.)

There's a disgraced former politician with an unfortunate habit of sending pictures of his crotch to women who aren't his wife.

Quote
Hours after former Representative Anthony D. Weiner of New York apparently deleted his Twitter account in the wake of a New York Post report that he had been involved in another sexting episode with a woman online last year, his wife announced that the couple were separating.

It was at least the third public episode involving such behavior by Mr. Weiner, who resigned from Congress in 2011 after it was revealed he had been sending lewd messages and photos to women online. That sexting scandal destroyed his political career, derailed a comeback attempt in 2013 and strained his marriage to Huma Abedin, a top aide to Hillary Clinton.

There used to be an opening batsman for Nottinghamshire whose name was Basharat Hassan. I recall watching him play at Chelmsford on one occasion but he retired hurt after John Lever hit him in the face with a lifting delivery. Poor BH was lifted bodily over the fence to the hospital next door where A & E staff took him away for a checkup. I think that must have been the same match in which I watched Garfield Sobers and Derek Randall playing.

Genau.

Interesting wee snippet about German names: Germans who wanted to hide the fact that their ancestors were tradesmen would often Latinize their names, e.g. Müller would become Mollitor and Schneider would become Sartorius.  I helped a chum of mine with a client of his called Mollitor, and I had a nice wee inward chuckle, knowing that his forebears had been snobs.

When Herr Dr Joachim Neumann poshed up his name he went further than latinizing his name, he greekified it to Neander (new man).  And the local  feature named after him was of course the Neanderthal, where bones were later found which turned out to be a new (.e. previously unknown) man.

Apparently, overtaking motorists do not leave sufficient clearance...

Which reminds me ...
Tom Passmore played football for Carlisle Utd and Gainsborough Trinity amongst others. And was a more 'cultured' centre-half than was the fashion at the time, as I recall.

Which brings us to:
Goalkeepers Tom Glover (Spurs) and Dominique Dropsy (France, Strasbourg etc)

Defenders Nicky Marker (Exeter, Plymouth, Blackburn) and Belgian Mark de Man (Anderlecht).

Ernie Middlemiss played 2 games at centre forward for Lincoln City in 1948, but failed to find the net. Not to be confused with goal-scoring winger Bert Middlemiss (55 goals for Spurs).

[ETA] Up front, lanky Portuguese Lokomotiv Moscow forward Eder is good at 'eaders.

I thought I posted that upthread...

FWIW, I did do a forum search for her name before posting and got nothing, and I wasn't going to scroll through the entire thread, so...

I've also just tried a search using your username in the "By user" field, and setting the message age to 1 day in order to filter out my post, and it can't find anything at all.

He has just posted about the number of miles he managed in 2019 - about 1800. He mentioned that he has toured in every continent except Australia and said he was reluctant to tour there because of his surname. Some bright spark - an Aussie of course - said that he would feel very welcome there because every passing motorist would wind their window down and call out his name.

Essex cricketer Charles Kortright (1871-1952) took 176 catches in his career.

There are some wonderful anecdotes about him. John Arlott believed that circumstantial evidence suggested he was probably the fastest bowler of all time. There was one occasion, apparently, when he bowled a not-very-short ball on a dodgy wicket and it flew straight over the boundary from pitching.

My favourite story was the occasion he bowled W. G. Grace, who, if out early in his innings, would stand his ground and say "All these people have come to watch me bat!" Kortright bowled him comprehensively. Grace tucked his bat under his arm with a harrumph and started to walk towards the pavilion.

"Are you going, Doctor?" enquired Kortright, "You've still got one stump standing!"

He was a very privileged individual, it seems, who once said "I've never done a day's work in my life!"

Have we ever had a YACFer in this thread?

Today I was talking with someone about names that can be both male and female and how, over time, they seem to all end up as only female; Hilary, Lesley, Kim... This person then told me that in the 1970s they'd had a flatmate who was gay and from him they'd known that, during that decade, lots of gay women took on the name Kim as a sort of lesbian trend. Maybe even a secret recognition code? So, yes, I know it doesn't quite fit on at least two counts, but near enough for a random thread.

Perhaps more interestingly (but not relevant to the thread) was that this came about because we were talking about a male Kim known to both of us (I've no idea if he's gay, straight or whatever, that's not the point here), and she said he'd adopted the name Kim as an adult, having rejected his family and become an anarchist. At the same time he changed his surname to Shelley, presumably after Percy Bysshe (and we think unusual names are a recent trend!), so he's Kim Shelley.

He couldn't possibly be, because he's the wrong sort of Kim and it's not the 1970s.

Although it is possible (if adopt a peculiar sort of determination) to read your first sentence as referring to a female Kim in a bigamous marriage, who after the (suspiciously simultaneous) death of husband and other wife, then shacked up with your aunt. In which case you might have reason to believe she's gay.  :D

Priscilla doesn't sound anything like a name for a train, but she has two boys: Thomas and Edward. I'm not actually sure which is cause and which is effect; were the books written for the grandchildren or the kids named for the books?

Ed: Just looked at the Wikipedia page, which says the stories were first told to his son Christopher, so the grandchildren must have been named after their grandfather's famous creations.

In my limited experience of discussing the place with locals the pronunciation has leaned towards "Alster", which sounds enough like "Ulster" that my mind went to Unionists etc.  "All Seseter" is certainly a thing, though, and if you say "Alchester" they look at you blankly.

There's a Sunk Island - just East of Hull, as it happens, on the way out to Spurn - which is neither an Island, nor Sunk.

But the wrong combination of high tide and high wind may well make it one or the other...

Another political one: a Polish MP of the nationalist "Confederation of the Crown" party has used a fire extinguisher to put out Hanukkah candles in the parliament building, making a lot of smoke (which it seems most of the MPs preferred to stay and inhale, presumably so as to be "on the scene", rather than follow instructions and leave the building). His surname? Braun.
