Carabao Energy Drink - only 63 calories per can
« on: 27 February, 2022, 07:07:53 pm »
Coke has about 120 calories, I believe.

How can it be an energy drink if it doesn’t have much energy in it…?

(As seen on advertising hoardings for the Carabao Cup Final.)
It is simpler than it looks.

"Energy" as in probably loads of caffeine and other supposed or actual stimulants.

Mainly taurine, ie the same shit that's in Red Bull. Can stimulate metabolism but doesn't actually provide energy that you don't already have. I mean, that's just simple physics.

There's plenty of energy drinks with less calories than that. Red Bull Zero has 5 calories per can.

But while standard Red Bull says "Energy drink" on the can, Red Bull Zero doesn't.

The government definition.

We are proposing that if a restriction on the sale of energy drinks to children is introduced, the drinks in scope would be any drink, other than tea or coffee, which contains over 150mg of caffeine per litre.

I should hope so too - no child should be consuming that much caffeine.

And the fact that they have to define "energy drinks" in terms of their stimulant content rather than their energy content only proves how daft it is to call them energy drinks.

Taurine doesn't stimulate metabolism, unless you're a cat, you can make your own. Chances are it's more likely to make you want to lick your own arse after you'd taken a crap. It will, at least, disguise the foul taste of the drink.

As far as I can tell, all these drinks are designed solely to make provincial town centres smell like sick on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Sorry, I should have been clearer: this is what the people selling these drinks claim it does ("gives you wings").

From what I remember of reading about it for work, you have to take high doses of taurine regularly over a period of several weeks for it to have a small effect on oxygen uptake during exercise.

Even if it does improve performance (I've never looked into it, I have some doubts), I'd hazard that most of the consumers of such energy drinks aren't exactly high-performance individuals or much in need of additional energy to help optimize the consumption of their second fried chicken of the day while they sit in their chavved-up wankerwagon and contemplate where they can score some weed later.

Correction: They make the provincial town centres (and the platforms of major interchange railway stations) smell like blue sick, rather than traditional sick.
