Mason/Kilner jars non sticky content identity labels?

Is there an alternative to sticky on labels - and their annoying removal?

I'm well into making kimchi and all sorts of pickly things, where the jars are stored in the fridge for long periods of time.

Would be happy with small tie on labels, but worried the usual string and thin card (like what we had for luggage and jam labels back in my youth) won't do well in cold storage.

Possibly overkill for this application, but Brother P-Touch laminated labels (or more economically, the Chinese knock-offs) have The Right Kind Of Adhesive, which sticks well and peels off without leaving sticky crud.  They're designed to withstand outdoor conditions, so the fridge shouldn't be a problem.

I labelled barakta's tea mug with one as a joke, and it's survived a couple of years of washing-up and tea-dribbling.

Here's why labeling is important and eventually transient - two jars of sweetheart cabbage and carrot kimchi, three days old still on the worktop fermenting nicely - and two jars, just filled today with swede kimchi, waiting for their farts and bubbles

Masking tape. Works brilliantly, stays stuck in the freezer if you're batch cooking and freezing or freezing leftovers, sticks fine to plastic and glass, peels off no problem and easily when you want it to, leaves no residue, can be written on with sharpie or biro. I have a roll in the kitchen drawer-of-doom for precisely this purpose.

As long as it's not really cheap masking tape, which I made the mistake of buying several rolls of some years ago (from Home Bargains or somewhere) and have only finally managed to use up.  Horrid teary stuff that leaves schmoo on everything.

That's the way I was led to believe/saw on YouTube, or wherever - and have done so for a few years. Have experimented between 2 days - 7 days at room temp first. Just to see how funky I could take it. Every jar has been wonderful, even the more pungent ones

Just remembered Chinagraph pencils - last time I used one was around 1972! Will pop into Porthmadog's finest bookshop/cum artist supplies tomorrow and see if they can still provide

Masking tape polymerises in UV light and is almost impossible to remove if lft on windows, pending painting tuits.
A dark cupboard or fridge might be OK but I don't know.
Micropore uses the same adhesive.
You have been warned!

We use a sharpie (other brands available!) permanent marker on pots that go in the freezer, and find it washes off fine in the washing up process.

  Immediately checked them out for the plain convenience - but preference determines they are too small.

So finally settled on Avery (the acme of labellers?) "removable, no residue" L4737REV™, 27 per sheet = 25 sheets (675 total in a box), ideally sized 63.5 x 29.6mm jobbies.

I still have most of a box of Avery A4 sticky labels - I think 15 to a sheet but CBA to go upstairs to check – which I liberated from my then-employer’s stationery cupboard in the mid-1990s.  I don't think they’re meant to be removable but they’re so old the glue isn’t what it once was.

Chinagraph rubs off quite easily if you handle the jars much.
