Yesterday was great.  Today was brutal, made slightly better by cake at the finish.

And congratulations on your 100,000 Audaxing kilometres!

Thanks for the slice of cake, eaten in true AUK style, just before my dinner at the Angel and Harp - though all I've done this weekend is sit around eating and drinking (plus a bit of controlling/tlc and some very pleasant socialising with fellow randonneurs).

Well done to all who battled through the headwind across the Fens. Commiserations to the larger than usual number of DNFs this year. It was indeed brutal.

Did the lady on the Brompton make it? I passed her on my way into Goole but didn't see her afterwards at all. I know she had a hotel planned in Lincoln, so I presume she bounced the Clews control to get back there at a decent time.

If it’s who I think it is, it would have been Charlotte on the Brompton.

Well done to all who continued on yesterday into the SSW headwind.

She was on her way into Goole as I was on my way out, but no idea after that.

Cracking ride up northwards, for me the endurance part on this ride seemed to be in managing to eat well enough more than in doing the cycling; for the rest it was generally easier to keep going than to think of some alternate way to get back to my left luggage at the start.
Green Welly and Sleaford Greggs went fine for food, But the 'spoons meal at Gainsborough did not hit the spot at all, and I ate very little at Goole, apart from yoghurt, coffee and some of my own marmalade sandwiches; More marmalade sandwiches at Kirton; I finally consumed by Goole purchases at Boston whilst we were waiting that 10 mins for McD to open up.
After Boston, the wind picked up, and for me the worst bit was the trek from Spalding to Whittlesea with next to no respite, I did wonder whether retracing the outwards route may have given more shelter but that's as far as my thoughts could manage at that stage.  By Whittlesea my appetite died again, the Sunshine cafe didn't hit the spot much either; in hindsight I should have had soup and a pudding, though I don't think they offered soup.
The leg to Red Lodge wasn't so bad, but I was aware that after Red Lodge it was going to be slightly bumpy for the last bit.  As whoever was there when I arrived said, there's lots to buy but nothing to eat - and they did have a good selection, just nothing I wanted just then!  So another yoghurt.  I may even have had some more marmalade sandwiches, but given I have the last 100ks worth still left I think not (one slice of bread's worth per 100km was the run rate).

I ought to mention the cycling too.  I love the fens, wide skied emptiness etc so perfect for me!  cracking tailwind and the shorter route up meant I saw the northerly bits this time too.
For me the dark section co-incided perfectly with navigation being required only when there were street lights available to read the route sheet by.

I timed my arrivee to get a slice of Rob's celebratory cake (congrats again), apologies for having to rush off so quickly.  The lovely mini-Rob said "last time you saw me I was so high" and saved me trotting out that old chestnut.
& thanks to all those who stopt and chatted for a while at Arabella pace (even more sedate than it used to be, on day 2 at any rate).
Good to see Gary again!  Even if only a 2 sec glimpse of the rear wheel of his (now dusty) gas pipe special.
Any fool can admire a mountain.  It takes real discernment to appreciate the fens.

Did Von Broad get in ?   I encountered him heading the wrong way near Crowland and pointed him back on route.   He seemed a bit weary.

I last saw him in Whittlesey.

Thank you Tom and helpers for organising. And congrats to Felstedrider for achieving Randonneur 100,000!

I struggled into the headwind south, more or less all the way between Boston and Red Lodge. As the morning got later, the wind got stronger.

Just wondering, how does yesterday's wind conditions compare to other infamous fenland events? Was LEL 2017 one of those that was quite breezy.

Van Broad made it with half an hour to spare. I think this was the swan-song for the rusty recumbent.

We chatted with Charlotte a couple of times and she mentioned a sense of humour failure at Boston. I doubt that she was travelling fast enough to finish in time.

HK and I DNFed Sunday afternoon when finishing in time became mathematically impossible, shortcutting 30-ish km off our ride to the finish.

A pity we couldn’t congratulate felstedrider in person.

I don’t think the wind was quite as bad as LEL17 but putting out a threshold effort for at best 25km/h is a bit dispiriting.

Congrats felstedrider on your great accomplishment. I've just done a quick calc to discover that I've only achieved half of your total. Thinking that I need to ride the same again to match your total is making me feel quite tired!

Ah! I wondered what ride I had come across when I was cycling home from Lincoln on Saturday night. Lots of suspiciously audaxy riders between Kirton in Lindsey and Lincoln. I was rather enjoying the tailwind after I'd been fighting a headwind all the day before riding to Lincoln over the Wolds.

I was feeling rather sorry for the hordes of riders I saw slogging into the headwind up the rolling hills between Kirton and Lincoln. I got many a cheery wave from you all though.

If anybody remembers seeing someone who looked like he could have been on your ride (tri-bars and a caradice), but going the wrong way, that was me :-)

I did get a beaming smile and a nice "Hello" from a lady on a brompton while I was stopped having a banana break in Althorpe I think?

So my first 600 and SR completed (hopefully!) I just wanted to say a big thank you to the organisers and all of the other riders, especially those that I rode with.  An awesome experience.

Loosing appetite on some controls during long events happens frequently to me. I ate well at all the controls apart from Gainsborough where I just had an oat cluster yoghurt and ice cream. With 130km remaining, the last 2 controls at Whittlesey and Red Lodge, I managed a cream jam bun, tub of raspberries and for the last leg, a cold carton coffee and oats cluster yoghurt. Although my head tells I needed to get a lot more calories down, I just happen to fancy light snacks instead of heavy food. It just about got me to the finish, but I did have a large packet of crisps and cereal bars as emergency backup. Although I did benefit from the kind company and shelter of Yvonne and Simon from Wiltshire, whom I first bumped into on some rides starting from Chepstow a few years ago. Thank you both.

I balied at Whittlesey satisfied with my 500km (id added some extra bits on the way north on purpose).

By the time I stopped I was in in need of immediate sleep and I think Id have been touch and go for the time limit as a result.  I erred on the side of caution and was glad I did given a work commitment first thing today - Id have been well and truly burst (or AWOL!) otherwise.  With hindsight its probably not a great idea to mix work trips & the longest audaxes (it pays the train fares but it bit me on the bum yesterday as I felt like I was effectively working to an earlier finish time).    I'll probably do a DIY 600 in mid July or August so will definitely look to keep the Monday after free.

I rode mostly alone but it was nice to chat with and see others - not to forget the longest 20 minutes of my life in Boston at 0440 on Sunday when we were joined by some local yoofs one of whom latched on my Scottish accent to regale me with details of his home town (South Queensferry), battered Mars Bars and the fact that at 21 he is a father (or course he is, its Boston).

Ride got serious after Goole and the hot pasty from oasis of the petrol station at Messingham was most welcome.  I was one of the riders who gave Hulver a wave - its always nice to see some other folk out in the dead of night!.  I started seeing things in the shapes of the hedges and suchlike so had to start / stop my way to Boston and the aforementioned wee wallopers.  I closed my eyes for 10 mins in the McDs in Boston as it was still too cold for me to sleep outside.

After Boston I couldnt rid myself of a recent social media image of the organised Dutch headwind based cycle race.  With my face contorted and hands close together in TT style I was almost able to muster 12kph as the cars went whizzing past at high speed.  My right knee began to complain in a way it hasnt done since 2010.

In Whittlesely I shunned the Sunshine cafe where Id eaten on Saturday morning for the Wetherspoons.  This proved a mistake - after what seemed like an eternity it became apparent that they had actually stopped taking food orders (that'll learn me for ordering on their app).  I was a bit all over the place at this stage so decided to have a proper kip and take stock.  I then rode to Peterborough with its lovely railway station.

The subject got an airing a few times on the ride but it is truly extraordinary the difference in the wind strength from day to night.

Huge congratulations to felstedrider, well done timb & thanks to Tomsk for organising.

I bailed at Boston on the return leg. Everything was fine on the way north, apart from a nagging feeling that something - unspecified - wasn't. I left the McDs at Goole and immediately felt as though someone had stabbed me in the back of my left knee. I took it easy through Kirton but even the slightest incline was painful and somewhere along the road to Lincoln I did something I have never done before and checked into a Audax Hotel.  It was a good one, fully enclosed, so I took a couple of ibruprofen and rested for about 90 minutes.

it didn't work. If anything, the knee was worse when I tried to get going again, to the extent that even clipping in was painful. The climb out of Lincoln was not appreciated. And so I crawled on to Boston. By this time (seven-ish) riders who had enjoyed a longer sleep were sailing past me while I ground along in low gear, trying to put as little pressure on the knee as possible. And the wind was definitely strengthening.

Reasoning that, although I had enough time in hand to complete the ride, even with the wind, it would not be an enjoyable experience, I went straight to the station in the hope that, post-strike, there might a train out at some point during the day, Fortunately, there was one to Grantham leaving 45 minutes later. I was able to get a connection to London and was home by 1pm. An ice pack reduced the swelling and today all I'm feeling is a dull ache, so I think I've avoided doing any damage.

Before that, though, it was good to see so many familiar faces, some of whom I've not seen since pre-lockdown, and congratulations to Felsted Rider, who cruised past me on Holland Fen, offering ibuprofen as he went   Also a treat, of sorts, to see Gainsborough in daylight. Nice to meet Rob from Cardiff, who I believe does a bit of lurking here, and also the stalwarts from Sleaford who made it to the Green Welly southbound as we arrived northbound.

Why should anybody steal a watch when they can steal a bicycle?

I’ve just looked at the historic data for the weather station at Cowbit which is between Crowland and Spalding.   The wind speed was 25 mph gusting to 36 mph as riders pushed south through the fens on LEL 17.  Your wind speed was 18 mph gusting to 21 mph yesterday.

Thanks Tom and friends for organising another splendid ride.  The first 420k was marvellous, nice tail wind up, good roads to ride at night and plenty of places to eat.  After that it was more challenging, I like the fens a lot but there are times when you wish for a bend in the road, pushing very hard to do 14 kph was draining and by that stage all the controls seem to have plenty of food but nothing I wanted to eat…… this seems to be getting a habit on long rides.  The last leg was hard and slow, I cooked my goose in the fens and when your goose is cooked…… still the smiling faces at the end and a cold beer when I got home made the day.  And the fellow riders who offer encouragement when said goose is cooked are so appreciated.

Just looked up some wind speeds from some other events I remember being windy

Pork Pie 200 - 2019 - 28 mph gusting to 41 mph
Capitals of East Anglia - 2019 - 26 mph gusting to 41 mph

Had look through this year for Cowbit.

16th Feb 2022 saw winds of 30 mph gusting to 47 mph.
