Sterilised milk where from?
« on: 02 July, 2022, 07:58:26 pm »
Does anyone remember the taller pointier bottles that sterilised milk came in ? The bottles, instead of having foil tops had tops that had to be opened with a bottle opener.

I used to love it.  Can it still be bought?

Sterilised milk is still available, in both glass and plastic bottles but only screwcaps now, I think. I understood sterilised milk to be mostly a Midlands thing but I am often wrong.

UHT - longlife milk (in cartons) IS sterilised but might not taste the same.

I think all supermarkets sell this.

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/search?query=sterilised%20milk&preserved suggests you can get sterilised milk in Tesco.

It looks like the difference between sterilised and UHT milk is whether the high temperature sterilisation is while the milk is in the container or not. There is a taste difference.

UHT = Ultra Horribly Tasting.

Stera wasn't much better but not quite as bad.
I've not seen a bottle of stera in years.  Probably not a welsh thing.  Very much used to be a Birmingham thing.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Bought by people who had no fridge, everywhere.

Obviously, fridgelessness was a poverty thing so there'd be more sterilised milk where there were fewer fridges.

As a child I used to see the bottles in Norf London, but don't recall anyone using it.
That said, how do I know it tastes horrid?

I acquired a taste for sterilised milk some 60 years ago and it's still my favourite type of milk to drink cold.

My local milkman still delivers it to my door, but as it lasts a long time if unopened, he delivers my weekly supply in one drop.

I used to take a pint of sterilised milk to work every day and my fellow workmates used to refer to it as 'council milk' . Presumably, as the poor council house dwellers were considered unable to afford a fridge.

And yes, I do live in the Midlands.

It seems milkandmore do deliver Delamare sterilised milk in screw cap glass bottles.

At £1.15 for 500ml, it's not cheap!

I found this article which explains the difference: https://www.newfoodmagazine.com/article/8203/uht-processing-of-milk/

tl;dr: UHT is just as sterile, but the process is faster and changes the milk less.

I like the taste of UHT milk.  Don't think I've knowingly encountered the batch-sterilised kind.  But it should be noted that I drank powdered milk as a small on account of living in a hot place with poor infrastructure and unreliable electricity.

It seems our local Tesco Superstore does skimmed, semi-skimmed and full fat sterilised milk, but only in the newfangled plastic bottles.

This former midlands council house dweller can tell you sterilised does taste different from UHT.  However, I'd use neither in tea unless in a distress situation.  I like sterilised in coffee (Camp of course) and rice pudding.
The present is a foreign country: they do things differently here.
