Tin openers
« on: 09 July, 2022, 09:18:06 pm »
Or are they can openers? Ours can't anymore – the cutting parts are still sharp but one of the plastic handles has cracked in such a way that it's no longer possible to squeeze them shut sufficiently tightly. So in the grand tradition, I turn to a cycling forum for kitchen item recommendations. In the equally grand tradition, I might then ignore you all and get whatever's cheapest at Argos or Wilko! But it's still fun and interesting to get the opinions. The broken one, for what it's worth, was a Culinare MagiCan, a present from my mum more than 15 years ago.

I’ll start then.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rikon-Safety-Master-Opener-Black/dp/B006M48JCE

It’s good. Would work well for anyone with limited hand strength, I think, and rounds the edges off very well.

We've got one of these. Probably the most effective one we've had.
There's no vibrations, but wait.

I use a Chef'n EZ Squeeze https://www.amazon.co.uk/Chefn-Opener-Squeeze-Black-White/dp/B002XUUSFC/

I struggle with tin openers, being so left-handed that I can't seem to operate any that have twisty parts. This one is a one handed job, requiring next to no dexterity, strength or coordination

These are surprisingly effective and reliable compared to the fancy stuff:

Our tin openers are unremarkable supermarket ones, other than for the bigness of the turny handle which ensures an acceptable barakta approval factor.

Honourable mention to a lever thing I found for opening ring-pull tins.  Barakta was unimpressed that I'd brought home a 'spack-handle' but grudgingly accepted that it works really well, and sometimes (when she's having a bad hands day) even bothers getting it out of the drawer, rather than abusing the nearest teaspoon.

Gosh. I now want one of those, not because I think it seems better, but just because it's different. Which is probably not a good reason.

As an aside, where is the presenter from? He says he's from the Mid-West but he says "full stop" and talks about baked beans, both of which indicate Britishness. Perhaps he's Canadian? And as a second aside, captions using brackets! He's clearly made those actively (but still failed on a few typos and punctos, but never mind).

The easiest can opener I've ever used is the Bonzer.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bonzer-Classic-Commercial-Opener-Stainless/dp/B06X6J8H1P/ref=asc_df_B06X6J8H1P/

It's the sort of thing you'd find in a works canteen kitchen, where they have to open 50 or more cans a day.

That's almost worth it for the name, but it doesn't look very barakta-friendly, needing your left hand to cup the tin in lieu of a handle.

They come in both left and right hand version.

Thought I had tagged you in photos I took.

Does come in blue and red.  Left and right handed too.
