Transition metals. Is it really just coincidence that the metals miners mean by this term (copper, zinc, cobalt and nickel, as they are the materials we need on "the energy transition"*) are also in the category chemists refer to as transition metals?

*Some at least would like to include coking coal as a "transition mineral".

My sister told me the other day that she and BiL had bought their house from a woman called Priscilla, who happened to be the daughter of, not Elvis, but Rev Awdry, author of those annoying-cute stories of anthropomorphized trains. Priscilla doesn't sound anything like a name for a train, but she has two boys: Thomas and Edward. I'm not actually sure which is cause and which is effect; were the books written for the grandchildren or the kids named for the books?

Ed: Just looked at the Wikipedia page, which says the stories were first told to his son Christopher, so the grandchildren must have been named after their grandfather's famous creations.

Going through some old papers I found a magazine from my primary school in the 1950s - and then remembered that the Headmaster was Mr L.A.G. Carr - and, of course, his first name was Lawrence - hence Lawrie Carr.

I spent the weekend in Alcester, a little Roman (obviously) town in Warwickshire, pronounced like Gloucester not Cirencester. It has an Alcester Unionist Club...

. . . not pronounced as in Gloucester by a lot of Brummies & Yam Yams -  it's   "All Sester"   . . . I dare say they'd called Bicester (as in Bister)  Bi Sester?

Nominative determinism?
Am I hard of understanding?

These incidents seem to be getting more frequent.

I'm sure they were rare when I saw Live & Let Die 50 years ago...
