Moors and Wolds 400
« on: 02 June, 2016, 09:09:49 pm »
I'm booked on this for the end of the month as a first 400.  Anyone else here doing it or done it before?

Any good night feed places, my MPP as fairly low (miles per pie)

I think that FBOAB did the definitive write-up on this ride.

I've done it 2 or 3 times. It's a good and fairly straight forward ride. The only downside is the last 20 miles or so as you circumnavigate Mansfield. It's like teetering on the edge of hell!

Now, Saturday 25th?  The CrinklyCalendar says no Cubs, Rallies or weddings that day.

Stamford Bridge@141km and a 10:30 kick off... so that should mean superspeedy fast bods from around half 3 and full value TECs up to about half 8?

*ponders*

(For clarity, IJL, Stamford Bridge isn't a control.  But there is sometimes a fat ginger bird hanging around by the duck puddle with a couple of gallons of water for topping up bottles, panniers full of free cake/cheese scone/flapjack, and sometimes a flask or two of coffee.  Although not generally in time for the bonkers-fast peeps!)

The residents of Stamford Bridge* might get a bit confused what's going on as the Lincoln 400 will be going through there on the same day. But I think with a 6am start and about 90km to Stamford Bridge we'll be through before the M&W riders arrive.

With the reputation the M&W has for weather, I guess I'd better ride the bike with mudguards though.

I was thinking of riding again. But then I read that ride report. O my.
I DNFd after not - very - far in 2014, too. It was wet and I just wasn't feeling it.

Bad weather can ruin any ride.

I rode this last year and the weather was good, this was my first 400 too. Having had a broken hip 12 weeks before I found Helmsley hill and Staxton hill to much to ride up.

I am riding again this year and aim to ride up the hills.

I don't think CrinklyCatering can make it this year.  Give my love to the duck puddle!

Query for the finish. Nigels letter says finish at McDonalds in Somercotes? The route sheet says Alfreton Road which is Tom Fox's house, the GPX also finishes at Toms.
Which is it?

Some thoughts after having completed my first 400.  I’m no stranger to going through the night on events and having come from an ultra running background I have done many events up to 45 hours without sleep and feeling OK.

I had read previously on this forum about going through bad patches but to persevere as it will get better.  However, nothing could have prepared me for how I felt on my first overnight event on 2 wheels.

From about 2am (around Brigg area), I could feel myself getting tired and unable to focus on the road ahead and with an overwhelming urge to lie down on the grass verge and go to sleep.  I ‘persevered’ through to Gainsborough, but sitting on the garage forecourt I could feel myself drifting off.  I forced myself onwards but still couldn’t shake off the drowsiness.

At 5.45am on A638 just south of Retford I spotted what looked to be a brand new wooden bus shelter and the urge to stop won hands down.  I lay down on the wooden bench and closed my eyes. I didn’t feel that I actually slept due to noisy traffic going past and after 20 minutes I roused myself and carried.  I did feel better and the sleepiness seemed to have disappeared but had no energy and felt a bit nauseous which again made it hard work.

It was nice to catch up with Oggie for the last 10 miles and having the company certainly helped me get through to the end.

Do any of the more experienced riders have any tips to combat the drowsiness.  Possibly I will try caffeine tablets next time.  I had previously done one ‘300’ and did not have any problems.  All things considered, I found this harder than I expected, but I need to learn from this experience and hopefully the next one will be better.

Yes, I agree.  But the problem is finding somewhere when in unfamiliar territory.  Lying down in a field wasn't an option as it was too wet and the bus shelter that I found was the first one I had seen for hours.

What surprised me was just how sleepy I felt as I have previously been through 2 nights without sleep and not having this problem.

This may be a basic question for an ultra-runner, but how much sleep had you had in the previous week ?   I find if I start an event rested (not very often) I can get through a full night without any issues.

I have previously done the same ride 3 years in succession (overnight 300 starting Friday night after a full day at work) with varying results.   Twice I have made it through without an issue and once I had to have a lay down a couple of times around dawn.   I do carry pro-plus for emergency use and I also chew (mint) gum which seems to help.   There's some tiredness that only a quick sleep will resolve.

Can't find a more recent thread  ???

I have signed up for this year's edition (10:30am 14th May 2022), now Xrated with a postal finish.
I bought the train ticket (getting the 6:00 from Ipswich means I arrive just in time for the off).
I've just read fboab's report, referenced above  :-X  ::-)
Will see what happens! Did a cba to enter DIY200 at yesterday, definitely ging to be full value.
