There was a Vermuyden house at Thorne Grammar, Heather tells me she was in it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornelius_Vermuyden

..and, reasonably on topic, there is Vermuyden Cycling Club in Goole, who were, from memory, quite a big racing and Audaxing club in the 90's.

Also, New Holland and New Holland Pier are not far to the east of the Humber Bridge. New Holland Pier being the landing point for the British Rail cross-Humber ferries before the bridge was built.

This background stuff may seem like a digression, but it's amazing what you see turn up in accounts.

An Italian magazine previewed the LEL in 2009, and pointed out that Yad Moss has a ski resort. That has to have come from me. I only discovered that there was a ski Lift there in 2001, when I saw the pylons. Now the lift and runs are on Google Earth.

Ski resort would be somewhat of an exaggeration.

Ramsey St Mary of course having a shop from which it was possible to get drinks and ice cream and take a brief respite from the strong head winds and heat of LEL 2013. Defintely the hardest day physically.  The northern hills were a piece of piss in comparison.
I totally agree with Phil W on this one  -  My tales from 2013 would include same sentence. That last day through Cambs. in scorching sunshine & strong wind really ground me to a halt & had me scratching around to fill up bottles, as being a northerner I'm not really accustomed to hot sunny days like that.     I've some superb memories & tales of 2013 so much so that I was initially worried about having another go at it this year in case it shattered the illusion & it wouldn't live up to my expectations, eventually thought process switched to "Sod it " & I booked on to LEL 2017 thinking why not try & replicate one of the greatest weeks & achievements of my cycling, I fortunately finished LEL 2013 with about 20 hours spare, but that last morning through Cambs was a flipping hard ride.

Ski resort would be somewhat of an exaggeration.

The Italian magazine was making the point that although Yad Moss is only 600 metres, it has a climate similar to 2,000 metres in Italy in the summer. Italian riders in 2009 were well equipped.

Lots of information about the ride means there are hooks you can hang stories off. I got to use footage from the 1948 PBB, the French Alps and Scotland in a video about LEL training in 2005. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKBquRNeqlE

I've posted all manner of oddities about the route in the past, one of my favourites is a documentary about coal mining near Alston in 1992, with a German commentary. That kind of mining continues to this day, on and off, depending on the price of coal. It's of interest to those Germans from coal-mining areas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIIyzPe4M8I

The most interest shown in part of the route has been through a film called 'Addicted to Sheep'. That was on a farm in Teesdale, which the ride will pass twice. That's been shown a few times on BBC4, and has been shown around the world. There's a version with French subtitles.  http://www.addictedtosheep.com/version-francaise/

There's much to be explored along the route. Castle Howard and the Howardian Hills would reward some investigation. Many riders will find the impressions overpowering. Some prefer to experience LEL without preconceptions, while others find reassurance in recognising bits they've heard about. That's the virtue of lots of material being available.

There are lots of LEL 2013 series in this edition of Arrivee. https://issuu.com/audax-uk/docs/arrivee_122_autumn2013

There's even a review of our LEL 2013 film on page 54, which prompted me to do a new trailer, and lower the prices.

And there's a PBP film.

Am I right in thinking LEL was born on 9th July 1989?
