Died 40 years ago today - possibly suicide, certainly an overdose.
His is always presented as one of those "what would he have done had he lived?" stories. Personally, from what I have read of his mental state at the time, the answer is probably "not a lot", but at least he left three good albums and, among them, a handful of truly memorable songs.
I gather that his sister has repeatedly rebuffed approaches about making a film of his story. However, seeing the posters for "Enigma", I can' help thinking that if she changed her mind, Benny Cumberbatch would be perfect for the role.
(I'll be opening a bottle of red tonight and putting Five Leaves Left on the turntable. Thanks Nick.)

Actually, she's just published a book about him.

My weekend loop (can't remember the last time I did it) takes me past the church where he is buried.
Being of an age, that is meaningful to me.

I'll leave this here...

"Black Eyed dog, he knew my name"
"I'm growing old and I wanna go home."
Words of a tortured soul. I love his music now - even though I was 14 and knew nothing about him when he died.

You'll never guess who Robyn Hitchcock's "I Saw Nick Drake" is about...
