Bolton & Bury Swifts have a facebook page and I think it was yesterday that they posted a video of the outside world, showing the hole in the brickwork which has a tube leading to the nest fixed within their loft. I don't know if that video is on youtube. I'll have a look.

All three chicks still in the nest as of this evening. Only one visible to the camera at the moment, but the other two have shuffled along the exit tube. I suspect they are big enough to look at the outside world now. BABS (Bolton & Bury Swifts) reckons it's been a pretty lean year insect-wise so it could take them longer than the (average) 42 days from hatching to fledging. Today is Day 40 since the first egg hatched.

Another chick fledged at about 2pm today. There are photos on Bolton & Bury Swifts' facebook page of the two chicks looking out of the tunnel onto the outside world.

BABS says she hopes the last one will stay another couple of days because it was definitely the runt of the litter and could do with a boost from both parents. Now the weather has warmed up there should be a lot more flying insects as well. She says these particular parents have done incredibly well given how bad the weather has been throughout June and early July.

It doesn't now. One chick left. It quite often disappears up the tube to stare at the outside world.

Here's another one in London whose chicks are way behind the Lancashire pair's.

From the London swft nest:

Quote
Timeline:
7th May - Swifts Returned
28th May - 1st Egg Laid
30th May. - 2nd Egg Laid
2nd June - Both Eggs Discarded
11th June - 3rd Egg Laid
13th June - 4th Egg Laid (Currently 2 in nest)
3rd July - 1st Egg Hatched

So they are feeding only one chick. It ought to grow pretty rapidly.

Apologies, m'lud. I believe that to be a Popular Beat Combo and I am therefore not qualified to comment.
