Anyone got a recipe for homemade version of sugru
« on: 09 March, 2021, 12:19:37 pm »
All my sugru has gone hard, years past it's sell by date.

So anyone made their own version with silicone sealant and corn flour?

Flour and basset hound slobber. If they get hold of a bag of flour you'll want to move house.

Paper mache.
Epoxy with a filler like sawdust, cloth, wire mesh.

Paper mache.
Epoxy with a filler like sawdust, cloth, wire mesh.

That would not be flexible enough.  Have used epoxy or super glue mixed with bicarb before.

I didn't realise that sugru is rubbery.

Searching with "homemade sugru" gives a few sites, eg

https://www.instructables.com/How-To-Make-Your-Own-Sugru-Substitute/

https://makelehighvalley.com/wiki/Homemade_Sugru_Substitute

There are also vids on Youtube.

Tried to buy some from B&Q, had to drive GF to get jabbed so two birds and all that.

So today, sugru no longer searchable via the B&Q website  Here is what you get if you care https://www.diy.com/search?term=sugru  but still listed on the site https://www.diy.com/departments/sugru-black-pva-adhesive/808387_BQ.prd.

So back to trying to make a homebrew version.

??

Have bought sugru a few times before and it has gone past the sell by date.  So don't fancy buying multiple packets again and not using it.

Or I could cycle to sugru shop and buy some.

Has anyone tried keeping Sugru in the freezer?

How to keep your unopened Sugru fresh

See the use-by-date on the single-use packs. If used within this date, the set Sugru will last and last. Keep unopened packs of Sugru in the fridge to triple the number of months you have left for use.

How long is the working time?

Once you open your single-use pack, the moisture in the air will trigger the setting process giving you 30 minutes to fix, bond and create before Sugru begins to harden.

So far, we haven’t found a reliable method of preserving Sugru leftovers, but we’re working on it. So, we recommend you line up a few little projects to make the most of each single-use pack of Sugru in one go.

The advice is not to store sugru in the freezer as it will shorten the life.

Thanks and I stored my sugru in the fridge but the issue, for me, using up the three packs is the issue.  Especially as buying it in shops seems to have quite a short date.

Additional: Got an email from sugru, the new formula last longer and can be stored in the freezer.

First go at making ugbug, after buying a tube of the right silicon and corn flour....

Made an utter mess.  Getting the correct weigh of silicone is harder than I though then mixing the two is even more difficult.

Methinks the most cost-effective thing is to buy small quantities of Sugru and freeze any surplus.

You'll spend more on ingredients and have Much Mess to clean.

It might appear to be poor VFM but you'll end up spending less in total, and have a useful and usable product.

I have REASONS for buying frozen Yorkshire Puddings...

Also need to seal the bath.
