Autumn

Its the 1st of September and tonight it feels like autumn for the first time. It's cold and damp outside. eels like this entire year is a month ahead.

It's felt very autumnal here for a fortnight. August has generally been a cool month this year. We've had only one day in which the temperature has exceeded 26°C, and nothing over 25°C since 15th. There have been several days in which the temperature has failed to reach 20°C. There have been plenty of NE winds and that has given us a lot of cloud cover. It's been pretty dry - 33.3mm.

My son spent about a month in Finland and he told me that in that time their weather broke a record when there were 7 consecutive days over 30°C. That was between mid-July and mid-August.

I feel cheated.

Weather forecast said it was first day of autumn today, no it bl**dy ain't.  I don't care if they have metrificated it to make it easier to identify, but I still recall being taught at school what day autumn started, just wish I could remember it.

Come late afternoon I had to change clothes as my shorts and t-shirt were too moist with perspiration through normal being lazy activities.

I live in shorts/t-shirt from about Feb to Nov, and usually hate summer as it's unbearable.  At least this year we haven't had to suffer.

The weather forecast will be referring to meteorological autumn, which runs from the first day of September to the last day of November.

Astronomical autumn starts on the autumnal equinox, which is on September 22 this year. The date of the equinox varies each year due to the earth's orbit around the sun being very slightly elliptical rather than circular.

Me too. We had a warm week in July, and that was it. We're promised a couple of days of pleasant weather next week before Autumn sets in properly, but no 'Indian Summer' (though the Daily Express was once again going on about 31C the other day - on what planet?). It may not be something to joke about, but it will be rather typical of our luck if Climate Change results in the UK getting colder and wetter.

I remember summer in Scotland.  When we moved to France in 1972 I was surprised that you could go outdoors at midnight in mid-July without a jacket or pullover.

Here in Cheshire there have been leaves falling for a couple of weeks now.  The farmers are busy combining and the field behind my house is being ploughed as I write this.
