mini-hatler - 200 miles in a day
« on: 23 September, 2021, 06:53:38 pm »
All,

This coming Monday (September 27th) mini-hatler is cycling London - Brighton - Oxford - London, with the aim of being in the pub back home in Wimbledon by no later than 9pm.

He's doing it as a personal challenge and is also hoping to raise funds for Mind.

Any and all donations would be incredibly welcome.

(And spare a thought for his parents, who are being press-ganged into accompanying him on the first two legs, mum on the first, me on the second. He has no bones in explaining that we are there to slow him down, so he doesn't blow up too early. The ruddy cheek !!!)

This is what happens when you are foolish enough to have a four year old stoke you up Ditchling Beacon on a trailer bike in the company of The Fridays.

Many thanks for whatever you donate.

He burst past me at the top of Ditchling once.

He's grown a bit since this picture.

Good grief. That doesn't seem like so long ago, yet it clearly was.

Many many thanks for your contribution.

I haven't had a peep out of him since he set the GoFundMe page up (I'm away in deepest Cornwall at the moment), so haven't been able to gauge his reaction to the funding progress, which is way beyond what he thought was going to happen.

There is a murmur of a commitment if he hits an as yet unspecified amount. When I get the amount out of him I may reveal the details of the commitment.

He has revealed the little extra on the GoFundMe page ; -

I just brought that waxing a little bit nearer. It was a pleasure being his lead-out on Ditchling, and I know how hard that ride's going to be for him (been there, done that). Good luck all of you!

Stu,

Brilliant !!    Thank you so much.  He's seriously worried about the waxing commitment now, only £112 to go.

We're reaching fever pitch here. Bikes are all fettled (including new bar tape for mini's bike), tools and spares boxes are all packed and in the car. Flapjack is being prepared, porridge is soaking, and the food supplies are lined up ready to be packed into the appropriate places.

List contents are steadily being ticked off and routing notes have got as far as Reading.

If you really want to worry him, tell him that the pros stop their waxing at waist-level.

Good luck to him.
In his shoes I’d start researching local waxing places now. :)

When Andy ilovebikes, from the FNRTTC, was planning an epic ride to, damn, can't remember, Roumania I think, he was raising money for an orphanage there. He did a q and a session at LMNH, which I, Leggy and the lovely Susi went to. To raise more money I seem to recall it was "cash for questions" along with "cash to rip a waxing strip off him". Or maybe it was all a dream.

Romania sounds about right. And I'm pretty sure it was an orphanage. I can't possibly vouch for any more than that.

I'm not sure how well a fiver a strip would go down with mini.

Hope this is OK? After a slightly late start and horrendous weather he's running about 20 minutes behind schedule having been about an hour (I infer) behind at one point. Sunny skies in Oxford await the end of teh second leg.

The run to Brighton was pretty brutal. Atop Ditchling the wind picked up significantly and the heavens tried battering us to death with rain. He’s a bit behind schedule having got through Pangbourne at 4pm.

Mission accomplished at 10.28…well done Joe (and his elders!).

Yup. Into the pub at 10.45. The two friends he had with him from Oxford made that deadline possible. They held 20mph for huge chunks, and neither of them had done much riding at night.

Mini bonked about 5 miles from home and his Wahoo crashed a minute after the bonk.

210 miles for the day.

Needless to say he's pooped.
