10 x 8 tarp
« on: 11 January, 2012, 08:59:39 pm »
Would a 10 x 8 tarp configured as simple A frame frontage make a good cooking shelter given that my tent does not have a lobby?

Mrs E and I have often thought about doing this (but never got round to it). I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work.

Based on my recent acquisition of a similar sizes tarp & subsequent experiments with different configurations I reckon your idea is sound.

I have used a 8'x6' tarp in 'lean-to' configuration with the family lightweight tent [3-person Lafuma], which though generous and roomy with good headroom, has very stingy porch space either side. This bodge is as much for storage as for cooking. We've used the tarp on its own on mild, midge-free nights in the woods, which is a bonus.

Theres a good site all about Tarpology and what you can do with them >>HERE<<

if you follow the article to the end you can download the plans as a jpeg, used a few of these while camping out with the canoe and they work very well

Canardly,

Did you go ahead with your tarp? Any pictures if you did?

We are thinking along the same lines re a cooking area for our small tent.  I've been looking at the DD Hammocks ones, and swithering whether the small one (2.8x1.8m) would be just too small......

Thanks

I have  DD Hammocks 3mx3m tarp

I initially suspected that it would be too big but took the view that what can hold a lot can hold a little

Wow, it's huge, we might be able to fit the whole tent under it  ;D

Seriously, thanks, your photos are much clearer than the ones on the website, you can judge the size easier in a garden than hanging from a tree in a forest!

I am now thinking the small one would be fine for a cooking shelter......

Decathlin do what looks to be a good value tarp set up:  http://www.decathlon.co.uk/tarp-khaki-shelter-id_2363223.html

It even comes with poles.

Thanks Kevin,

I saw that but unfortunately it weighs the same as our tent!

I've just got a DD 3x3; like Jogler, I think it looks big. I would seriously consider using it as our only shelter, given that the other Es are a lot smaller than me.
I also got two telescopic poles so that we can set it up tent fashion.

Next week, a Bretagne!  I assume that it's similar to Wales, so will take the mountain tent and use the tarp for additional shelter.

I started with an Alpkit Rig 7 (2.4 x 2.8m, or 8 x 10 feet) for solo trips, but found that it's just a bit too big.  I've just ordered a smaller Integral Designs Siltarp 1 (1.5 x 2.4m, or 5 x 8 feet) that should be more suitable for me.
