Title: Double Dutch 200 Easter Saturday CANCELLED
Post by: Martin on 30 January, 2012, 10:59:09 pm
before you all fill up your calendars or arrange to do Arrows up to the Frozen North; a nice easy (but see caveat down thread about wind) pan flat 200; taking it all the way up to The Wash this year, and promise no Tescos car parks,

ignore the post card finish; there will be a pub somewhere as an alternative

Hmm. This'll make a good candidate for my RRTY, plus it is in an interesting part of the world. I think I might broach with The Present Mrs the subject of me and the bike disappearing over Easter for a day or so.

I will be entering the event again this year. But will try my hardest to follow the OUT route out this time and save myself 30k extra in going in before out  ::-)
Really enjoyed it last year but was strongly tiring guess no slopes to freewheel down.

Route sheet and gpx updated on the calendar page following yesterday's sporting route check
(block headwind from Holbeach for 80km to the finish) suggest you make your peleton buddies now if it's like that on the day...

quite a few daffodil bulbfields out but there will be loads more on the day

http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/12-555/

much improved route from last year with no horrible outskirts of Kings Lynn (cycle route all the way along the river into the historic centre instead) and a nice view of the Wash after Sutton Bridge

look out for Moulton windmill (just before Springfields) too; a Dutch masterpiece  :)

I'm doing this too. Only second 200, and hopefully the 1st I'll finish in daylight.

Shame the train service from Cambridge is rubbish so I will be driving to Huntingdon (not up for a 260k ride yet)

I will be making a few sacrifices to the god of winds between now and then  ;D

Ok you have it sorted good. That does beg the questions as to should I be doing the ride but that is a question for another day thinks. Incidentally there is a what looks to be pretty good camping site down the road in Brampton (only a couple of miles away from the start which you may wish to consider)

Mrs D and I are making a short weekend of this, staying at the Premier Inn on A1/A14 junction (should be nice and peaceful there!) - she will visit Anglesey Abbey and probably do a walk around Hemmingford Grey while I ride DD200.  For the first year in quite a few (apart from the year I broke my pelvis) I'm not riding Dorset Coast.  This is my alternative for RRTY - talk about sublime and ridiculous!  I think Abbotsbury Hill alone has more climbing than this entire ride.

a co route checker used the ferry across from Kings Lynn to West Lynn; 80p single. He said it didn't save any time but was fun;

Best refreshments were the Lloyds No1 bar in the main square; definitely worth the extra few 100m,  will hand out a map on the day

I've entered

I'm hoping that it will suit this flatlander. I know the road back from Spalding, from several Hitchin-Huntingdon-Spalding-Skegness rides. However, I'm worried about the Ramsey Bergland, the Mont de Whittlesey and the nearby bridge over the Wash which, IIRC, rises to a height of at least 1m.

Well according to the met office its not going to be a shorts and t-shirt job. The ride out to Lynn looks like it could be hard work with average winds speeds of 15 mph with gusts of 30mph coming straight off the North Sea.

Thinking about packing a spinnaker for a peddle free ride from Spalding to Huntingdon.  ;D

just like last year but without the glorious sunshine. It won't spoil the view up past Guys Head lighthouses

NB finish control is in the car park of the George Hotel Huntingdon (last instruction on route sheet before station), will watch your bikes while you re-hydrate  :)

I've managed to download a revised timetable (http://www.firstcapitalconnect.co.uk/plan-your-journey/planned-timetables-changes/details/GN2012-04-07/).

As far as I can make it out, on Saturday, buses replace northbound trains on the Cambridge line only (I'm in Hitchin, which is the junction). I'll be able to get my planned Peterborough train up and arrive about half an hour before the event

In the early hours of Sunday, buses start to replace trains on the Peterborough line.

Southbound, trains don't stop at intermediate stations between Biggleswade and Stevenage, with buses running between these. Going home, I can do some extra miles by hopping out at Biggleswade or, more likely, over-shoot to Stevenage and ride the five miles home.

Not too bad :)

It's always good to say hello to new faces and match them to names. I'll almost certainly be in the white, yellow and blue of Hitchin Nomads on a light blue (steel is the real deal) Dawes.
Title: Re: Double Dutch 200 Easter Saturday
Post by: Camrider on 05 April, 2012, 08:15:24 pm
Yes, its always nice to meet up with new people, even if it is only at the start before they vanish into the distance ;D

I will also be riding a steel machine, which should not be easy to miss as its likely to be the only stealth black Rohlhoff geared bike in the station car park.

Weather forecast looking a little better wind wise, but its going to be cold one so a good incentive to peddle faster.

As usual I have made up my own route sheets (Bigger font in case it rains and I have to go sans specs, plus I like to add more distance markers) so you can have my copy if Martin has no spares. It has a bit of my scruffy notation on it but still perfectly readable so I will bring it along.

Well that was quite a tough ride, head or side wind for most of the route to Spalding, then it magically drops and turns westerly for the last leg. Was really looking forward to being blown back to Huntingdon. Had to refuel with fish and chips at Thorney to get those last 30 kms in  :P

fastest 200 of the year - and I still have to take the winter tyres off !!
Towed to start with into a stiff wind by LWandB, with HK and Drossall in the group.- shake them off at 1st control with a quick in and out - but then they pass me with some 30kms to go into Kings Lynn - and I decide the pace is too much to try to hang on.
KL caused problems trying to find a good quick place for a top up - I was with Martin and Sarah ( notp). We tried to cross by ferry but it would have been too long a wait.
Steady old trundle with M & S and an increasing group up to the edge of the Wash - and then blessed relief - it is now wind behind. Lose a lot of the group as 2 visitations strike them - but on homeward run -I am eventually caught again by LWB , HK and 3 more . LWB hangs back to keep me company for last 40kms or so - anyway they can not go until I reach Huntingdon  as they are handing over HKs bike to be taken towards Boab on loan.
Quick pint at the finish in the George - load HKs bike and off home.

Thx Martin - unusual Audax ride - I have never had such scenery before - some daffs but no tulips these days.

Wind made it tough until the turn round - but then it was fun.

I'm rather afraid that we slightly spoiled the day for some customers at the George at the finish :-[

They had been for a pleasant ride around Huntingdon and were finishing off with a drink. They were curious to know about all the cyclists turning up, and made the mistake of asking. "What, not in one day, you did stop overnight? But you'd have to stop somewhere for food (yes) and you wouldn't have time."

Unfortunately I don't think their ride seemed so far after all :D

I had a good day out, headwind up to Kings Lynn led by a strong group of riders that Fidgetbuzz spoke of.Is littlewheels and big, the big guy with the Paris/Brest top on?Lost them at Kings Lynn looking for a cafe'.Drossal caught me at Crowland and got me back on route when I missed a instruction.Lost him for a while when I stoped for a Milkshake at Thorney.Caught him up about 15kms from the finish. Thanks Drossal for helping with the navigation  into Huntington :),my Garmin city navigator doesn't recognize cycle paths. All in a a good day out and my first Randonee on fixed wheel.

Big guy Fat bloke wearing a PBP Audax bragging jersey is a fair description. Some daffodils sighted but any tulips were well-hidden.

Headwind wasn't strong and no hills meant a comfortable ride. A nice change from the nasty short hills of the Chilterns and Cotswolds, a recommended event. Climber-types like HK tend to disagree, of course.
Title: Re: Double Dutch 200 Easter Saturday
Post by: Fidgetbuzz on 08 April, 2012, 12:54:38 pm
Just for clarification - LWB was not wearing the ordinary PBP top - that is far too common - he had on the PBP Audax top - different event - held every 5 years - different rules etc etc - ask him to describe all about it next time you see him or HK - the lady riding with him.
Title: Re: Double Dutch 200 Easter Saturday
Post by: drossall on 08 April, 2012, 04:12:56 pm
Headwind wasn't strong ...
Really? I thought it was a gale ;D

LWB basically towed me, and half the field at times, to King's Lynn. A large group rode out to March. From there, LWB collected one or two of us and offered us a tow. We picked up more over the next few miles. I was doing the full echelon thing, moving from side to side as the road swung, just to hang on. We broke when some of us missed a turning, and I did the last few miles into King's Lynn with LWB and HK.

After lunch, the three of us set off again, with me still wheel-sucking. Bit disappointing, given that I had been able to do a fair share of the work in the Stevenage event, but LWB was very gracious. About half way to Spalding, I blew, and he even came back for me then, but soon afterwards HK punctured, and they sent me ahead, coming back past with about five miles to go on that leg.

By Spalding, I was really feeling it, and almost packed, but a cup of tea and a cake in the cafe revived me. As I left the town, nightrider and companion passed in front of me, but I didn't see which way they went, so stopped to check my directions. This resulted in a chase all the way to Crowland.

The ride back was good, with wind assistance, and eventually I just shaded inside my target of 10 hours, which was pleasing after my bad patch.

Thanks very much to stevevw and crew for giving me lifts in both directions - just as well, since I gather that my planned train was cancelled.

A well run and thought out ride.  A big thank you to the long suffering Mrs M for acting as the finish check point and Easter Bunny!  If you haven't ridden this one, make a note to do so next year.

A couple of pictures of the day, including LWaB in his bragging jersey at Spalding and the co-pilot having some fun at the first check point.

my Garmin city navigator doesn't recognize cycle paths.
If you use a track (as provided by the organiser) or a route with "follow roads" off, it doesn't matter so much. I was using a track on this occasion and barely referred to the route sheet. I took a couple of wrong turns and spotted them immediately, because the arrow representing my location moved off the track.

Thanks for the photos Camrider; they certainly show the big skies well, hope you enjoyed that little diversion; the most Dutch bit of the whole ride IMO

That was an interesting section and perfect photo op (as well as an extra feed stop). Please feel free to use my pics if they are any use (contact me if you want high res. copies)

As next year's event is the week after Easter I suspect the daff fields will once again be denuded.

As next year's event is the week after Easter I suspect the daff fields will once again be denuded.

well actually all those fields we passed still had the flowers on; a lot of them were dead having flowered several weeks previously, no idea how one field can be completely dead and another still half out. The only place I've actually seen the flowers being picked rather than harvested for bulbs is by Saracen's Head on the A17 (on my original DIY route which went to Boston but 230km)

This was my first 200k and it was a good ride (I was one of "Team Hitchin" by the way!). I didn't look up much until the tailwind kicked in after Holbeach St Matthew but I was pleasantly supprised at how strong I felt at the end (the fact that it was flat must have helped). Next challenge is to find a more hilly 200k to do so that I don't feel strong at the end!

Provisional results online now; 43 finishes out of 63 entries with 3 DNF

LWaB; were Springfields OK about taking bikes in? Mrs Zoom and I were asked to move them out by the car park but they said they'd keep an eye on them by CCTV

Including a finish by someone who left his brevet card behind at lunch, to reduce weight I guess.

Nobody seemed concerned about where the bikes were parked in the courtyard while we were there but we were only there long enough for a swift pint before toddling home.

Oh that. We just walked into the maelstrom looking for coffee and a toilet. Costa and a long line, so only a pass mark, at a push. That is a weird place, lots of folk wandering about amongst stores selling stuff few people were buying. Silly way to occupy the day, to my mind. Still, takes all sorts.

The coffee shop didn't have a problem with our bikes leant against a wall inside their fenced compound and neither did anybody else. Most folk drinking coffee were huddled inside avoiding the fresh air (= cold).

Quite a shock to the system going from complete isolation to herds of shoppers in the space of a few minutes. Mind you it was nice to get off my not completely broken-in B17 for a few minutes!

I was on my own at Springfields - just gave up when I could not see anywhere to get a drink and receipt - it looked an absolutely ghastly place to me-- I went a few hundred yards onwards and stopped at a small convenience store. Ok I could not sit down and have a drink and a chat - but it didnt look as if Springfields was cyclist friendly to me.

the only event in the calendar that day, what are you waiting for?  make a weekend of it :)

Can you arrange for there to be no nasty wind blowing from the North this time, especially one that decides to stop blowing once you leave Spalding.

I road a big chunk of this route from Cambridge for my Oct RRtY and got another northerly so another hard slog to King's Lynn, at least it stuck around for the homeward leg this time but just to make it more "interesting" the last 3 hours were ridden in solid rain, flat does not necessarily mean easy I have discovered.

I'm heading Flatland-ward tomorrow to check none of the route has sunk;

this will be my earliest ever foray out to those parts; is there still snow on the ground?

I'm thinking of sending it here (a few km E of Kings Lynn) next year

a nice routine route check yesterday without the headwinds of previous editions. Not much in the way of daffs now there are billions of them all waiting to delight you in 4 weeks.

I've updated the gpx for the ferry crossing at Kings Lynn; if you want to avoid this pm me and I'll email the landlubbers version, Route sheet will go online tomorrow

entries up to 45; have you people not got relatives to visit or major DIY projects that weekend?

the daffs are reportedly 4 weeks late so should be in their full glory

a pub finish control is looking likely; and Easter Bunny will be helping at the start  :P

entries now up to 60 which is very impressive considering I was expecting about 6 first time I ran it  :)

got the last postal entry today; it's open by Paypal until some time on Good Friday after which EOL strictly by prior notification (mobile number on the route sheet)

looking like the NE wind might subside a bit by Saturday; by the time you get to Kings Lynn you should have broken the back of the ride

any DNS's mean even more of these for those who do ride  :P

Checking the route out on google maps  just now came across this - just off route but rather inaccessible.

Looks attractive for conspiracy specialists - especially being so close to the inland lighthouses.

isn't that something to do with the RAF ranges along the coast there? (not sure if they actually drop bombs or just aim them)

anyone who did 2011 but missed last year will be pleased to know the godawful bit through Kings Lynn to Tescos is no more; just a pleasant ride along the river bank instead  :)

a different place; the KotB would not fit 65 riders inside on Easter weekend;

current plan is The George in Huntingdon (last but one instruction on the route sheet) assuming my trusty helper turns up  :) I doubt he will be in the courtyard though...

There are 3 of us coming over from Northants for this as our first Audax, looking forward to a pleasant day out in the fens, last time I rode out via these roads to Hunstanton we had a stiff headwind for the entire 85 miles home, looks like it'll be the other way round tomorrow.

thanks everyone for showing up in such harsh conditions  :) I think this ride shows that just because a 200 is flat does not make it easy but it looks like most people who fought through to Kings Lynn had the wind mostly behind after that (although every so often a turn would remind you just how raw it was)

glad you enjoyed the ferry; didn't see anyone else on mine but the operator assured me it had been busy with riders

looks like about 50 finishers although many seem to have opted for the post-card option so will await the Postman's Knock

sorry you were not able to enjoy the usual spectacular colours of the bulbfields but fingers crossed for next year (which will be Apr 18th as Easter Saturday seems a good choice) there may be some TULIPS

and a massive thanks to Canardly of This Parish again for manning the finish control

Flat ≠ easy, but I already knew that and therefore wasn't surprised to discover a biting headwind once past March. What did surprise me were all the snow / sleet squalls that I rode through between March & Holbeach St Matthew. I know the past few months have been cold, but still I wasn't really expecting to be cycling in snow at the end of March. Once in Kings Lynn I thought I'd partake of the burger van, as a number of other riders were doing, only to me told there were no more eggs :(. Oh well, I quickly grabbed a receipt from the newsagents and rushed off for the ferry, which having check the ferry times before leaving home I knew was due imminently. The short ferry ride between Kings Lynn & West Lynn was a novelty and very much enjoyed, esp. as it meant I didn't have to backtrack to cross the Great Ouse. Riding across to Holbeach St Matthew was the bleakest part of the ride in terms of scenery and I was happy to turn around and start heading to Spalding. Huge fields of daffs were spotted before Spalding, and it was good to see some things were trying to grow, despite the coldness of the past few months.

The section after Spalding along the River Welland felt very much like riding in The Netherlands, especially so when the road is on top of the dyke. The Thorny road wasn't too bad as the wind was favorable, but it was still soul destroying. I also had to stop after Whittlesey to remove my little neoprene toe warmers as the constriction they were placing on my feet meant I was getting hot foot :demon:. However, I was in no rush as I knew I wouldn't make the 17h00 train from Huntingdon and so leisurely rode along enjoying the sun.

Thanks go to Martin for organizing, and keeping entries open until the last minute as I only decided to ride a couple of days before the event. Canardly was on hand at the finish to take the cards and being able to sit & chat with a few other rides in The George is a much more preferable way to finish than just posting the card back to Martin as it makes it feel more like a calendar event than a perm or DIY.

Tough day for me - pushed too hard on the section from March to Kings Lynn and I never really recovered from that.

On a warm and windfree day I think that would be a really nice easy route.
With snow coming down and a strong headwind with no cover for four miles in every direction, it's a different story.

The views are great in some places, it's worth seeing if you don't know that area (I didn't) and the traffic is really quiet. However, the best part of the event for me was that everyone got thrown together as they realised that going in a group was much easier. So I got speaking to a lot more people than usual and there was a definate sense of shared pain in the air  :)

Didn't realise the pub was available so I'll be another postal finisher - thanks for organising  :)

it's the 7th time I've ridden the route, the first 2 were DIYs. So far I've had Sun and tailwind followed by rain and headwind for the last 90km (when it went to Boston) and 5 times more or less exactly like yesterday but with higher temperatures. The easiest time was actually a month ago with a gentle 5mph wind all day

feel free to ride it as a DIY anytime; I sadly can't offer it as a perm without receipt potential in Nordelph and Holbeach St Matthew (but you can go to Boston to make 228km in all)

Thanks Martin, a great day out, and if you are going to have a headwind better on the outward leg than the return. Nice sunny afternoon, and with a tailwind it almost felt like spring, until you came to the next partch of snow. Thanks also to Geoff for the company throughout. Will probably go back to explore a bit more without Audax time pressures.

One of those days, managed to complete 8x 200k this winter and looked to add a couple more points as part of LEL training. Nice flat course which suits my 104k frame! Unfortunately, I found to my cost that tendonitis in the wrist does not improve the more you ride, so caught the train at Kings Lynn to Ely and rode 40k from there, still 125k for the day so a good workout.

Last week I bailed to save a vulnerable rider on the End of Hibernation ride so it would be nice to complete next time out.

Certainly worth considering for next year, along with the Old Squit I can manage it in daytime this time of the year.

A decent day at last, Ok SSoST was better. Wind as usual but nothing that had my speed below 15mph and a few spots of rain on the way to Lynn. Good traffic free route. Fast controls  ;D. The run back south was a blast.

Hung around at the pub for an hour after finishing in the hope there would be someone to take the cards but no ones showed up, if I'd hung around any longer I'd have drunk too much energy drink to ride home. Can't complain, it was as it said on the tin.

you must have been very quick  :o Canardly OTP very kindly manned The George until I arrived at the back of the field (had to attend a rider down who wobbled went over the bars and did a faceplant  :( now recovering in Boston)

I think you all had the wind the right way round, it was mostly behind after Guys Head and seriously behind through purgatory (the looooong section from Crowland to Upwood)

I was able to donate £1 per rider to Help for Heroes at the ferry terminal as their son lost a leg in Afghanistan, they remarked on the civility and co-operation of the riders  :)

sorry you were not treated to the usual Daffs, they were at their best a month ago, and not even out of the ground 2 years ago such are the vageuries of British spring weather. Next year I'm going to re-route the section before Kings Lynn to hopefully take you past some tulips!

This week happy memories of my visit to Huntingdon, I suppose after amnesia last week which put me in Hinchingbrooke hospital at least I have a memory!

Lots of familiar faces riding yesterday, I was looking forward to it after my enforced layoff last week. Unfinished business from last year when the gout got my wrist, also got the navigation right this time just before Kings Lynn, turning left at Chernobyl. Although planning to take the ferry, I was out of sync with the times so took the road crossing instead.

Headwinds are no problem, I just put down more power, and tailwinds on the flat provided the opportunity to open up. Definitely not one of my Lanterne Rouge rides.

The Fens are very scenic in their own way, I suppose having been brought up on a farm things seem familiar. Enjoyed the abbey and fine churches on the route, the triple bridge was one of the strangest constructions I have seen. Healthy option bacon cheeseburger at Spalding, where I was caught by the Norwich Velo trio for the fourth or fifth time that day. When they passed me later standing next to a field over a small bridge they were worried I might have had another amnesia attack, fortunately just a comfort break.

Still reasonably strong to the finish at the George, in at 11 hours 15 minutes, a quick sign in whilst admiring the young ladies from the wedding reception, then off home. McDonalds on the way and the whole bar of fruit and nut kept as emergency rations. Very tired last night but happy to have now completed all five rides that were DNF or DNS last year, I do not like loose ends.

Expect to see some of you on Green and Yellow Fields next week, will pass on the curry after my recent problems.

Thanks Richard P and unnamed Audax UK shirted guy for your company...

If he was on a red fixed bike with rusty chain, then it was Roly, not OTP I believe. I stuck with him much of the way to Kings Lynn and a little bit after the ferry. It was this 'wot dun me in' as I'd promised myself to start slowly, plod a bit and finish in good order - I did quite the opposite. As it was, I had a great run up to Kings Lynn+ but suffered terribly for the last 95km, bonking completely at Kings Ripton. As I passed through Thorney I espied a comfortable looking park bench in front of a little green - thanks to the yellow-shirted rider who berated me as he passed (something like "Come on now; there's no time for that!") which prompted me to get going again.

Thanks, Martin, for a great ride, and thanks to the chap at the George (Canardly?) for sorting out the Brevets. BTW, did anyone actually submit a Greggs Bakers (in March) receipt that had Newcastle-upon-Tyne as the address (I subsequently went into the Tesco Express to get Snickers+proper receipt, just in case)?

Started a bit late due to a dodgy tum, and suffered from a couple of punctures, on new tyres  >:( but apart from that had a very good day indeed  :)

Maybe it's the lack of hills but this ride seems more sociable than most of the 200's I've done. Noticed this last year and yesterday provided confirmation with many conversations and 'hello's all the way round.

Cool weather to start and a quick run to March where a trip to Greggs beat my stomach issues into submission with the mighty cudgel of two sausage rolls. A good run to Kings Lynn apart from puncture #1 outside Nordelph. Thanks to the many riders who asked if everything was OK and the man across the road who came out of his house to offer water and support! Norwich Velo provided much entertainment in the queue for the ferry and after a short trip across the river it was on to a busy Spalding for some refreshment from the (very good) snack van. The weather had picked up significantly by this point as attested to by my burnt nose this morning. Final run in was fairly quick with some side/tail wind and I bumped into quite a few riders including Norwich Velo for the tenth time that day and Big Saxon admiring the triple bridge.

On paper this appears to be an easy ride but the wind makes it a different story. I'm also used to hilly terrain so sitting in the saddle and constantly pedalling, no uphill or downhill to break things up is a challenge for me.

Many thanks to Martin and Helper(s) for their work in putting this ride together. It's an excellent ride, well worth doing for the unusual scenery alone.

A very nice day out. As others have mentioned wind plays a big factor on this ride but it was never really strong enough to make the outbound leg to Kings Lynn overly tough.

The day started badly for me with the GPS refusing to start and me not having a paper copy of the routesheet (Sod's Law really given my recent post on here re the virtues of GPS  ::-)). So I was left with a decision to either abandon or just tag along with a group and feel my way round. I was very familiar with the route out to March and back from Spalding so figured worst outcome would just be figure out the rest as I go. As it happened, I tagged along with a couple of shifting groups until just before March where I shared the work with a couple of Sudbury CC chaps and some 200k noobs. A quick stop in March saw the same group work together to Kings Lynn with myself and the Sudbury chaps doing the lions share of the lead out.

Once in Kings Lynn myself and the noobs (Bruce and Pet, notp) decided to go for the ferry and Sudbury CC chose the road. We got to the ferry for 12.35 to catch the 12.40 crossing but the little boat decided it was going to not bother with the timetable and sat annoyingly across the river for another 20 mins before deciding we were worthy of passage! So, our crossing took around 25 mins on total... little annoyed but hey, no rush.

The next stage was in and out of the now quite strong wind whipping of the coast but after the info we turned south and headed briskly to Spalding, taking the chance to enjoy a 15 min diversion to check out the fantastic working windmill at Moulton (cue much hilarity when Pet wondered out loud where the water supplying the mill came from.... er, it's a WINDmill....  ::-) ;D).

Once in Spalding I had to eat - I had done 90% of the work on the front and needed food. A quick stop there and we headed out to Crowland. Favourite part of the route for me, a decent tail / side wind and a lovely run along the drainage canals (reverse of last year's LEL route) to Crowland, although we did get a reminder of the strength of the wind on the 400m stretch into Crowland. Slightly into the wind again to Thorney and then an easy if uninspiring run through Whittlesey (where we caught an passed the Sudbury chaps), Pondersbridge through to Upwood. Bruce had started to feel the exertions of his first 200 over this leg and our pace was easy with me often going off the front and having to drop back to pick them up.

We got back to the George at exactly 18.00 so I thought a decent run, made a little slower by the delay in the ferry crossing and looking around the windmill. Nice to help some newbies through and they were thoroughly impressed with the whole Audax thing so I reckon we will definately see those guys again.

Lovely route and thanks to Martin and Canardly and a lovely and social day out.

On the ride over from Cambridge to the start, I was passed on the busway by Flatlander, and I thought I would see if I could hang on to his wheel, just for a little bit. In less than a mile, he had shaken me off and disappeared into the distance!

With the wind in the northeast, I found it very hard work to Kings Lynn. Some riders may be able to "just put down more power", but when the headwind blows like that, mile after mile, I got nothing! At least with hills you eventually get to the top! I put my head right down and hung on to some generous wheels and then when I couldn't hang on any more I stopped and hunted in my pannier for something to eat. I always find morale difficult to keep up in a headwind, especially since there's a tempting train home to Cambridge from King's Lynn.

Binnimoor Fen, east of March. (44 km)

It was a good opportunity to try out the panorama feature on my phone: there's no better way to capture the relentless bleakness and flatness of the fens:

I do like the run-in to Kings Lynn from Stowbridge. The high bank of the Great Ouse provides some protection from the wind, and as you cycle along you can contemplate the fact that the road runs more or less along the zero contour, and many square kilometres of farmland in Marshland Fen to the west are below sea level. Then you cross the Great Ouse and, a couple of kilometres later, the flood relief channel (begun after the great floods of 1953 and completed in 1964). On the Great Ouse there was a pair of great crested grebes doing their courtship dance—each one bobbing its head in turn.

Great Ouse relief channel near Saddle Bow. (79 km)

At Kings Lynn I resisted the temptation to have a sit down and instead bought a baguette to eat while waiting for the ferry. I was lucky with the timing—I only had to wait about five minutes, and soon I was in West Lynn. I looked at the clock as I set out again from the ferry car park: it was 13:00, so I had averaged only 17 km/hour for the first five hours.

There was a tailwind as far as Sutton Bridge, but then there was some difficult riding on the top of the dike at Guy's Head with the wind blowing straight off the North Sea. It was a huge relief to make the turn at Holbeach St Matthew and finally put the wind behind me for good.

River Welland near Crowland. (154 km)

I didn't take many photos in the latter half of the ride: with the wind at my back I was keen to make progress, and in any case there's hardly anything to see after Thorney: just mile after mile of dead-straight and boring B1040. I ate my last twix at Ramsey St Mary's, and then it was up into the "hills" north of Huntingdon—the high point is at 44 m near Sapley, but this seems quite exciting after 150 km below the 10 m contour line!

At the George I ate a bowl of chips and chatted to a couple of audaxers who had come down from Sutton Coldfield, and then it was back on the busway to Cambridge. Along the way I surprised an unwary heron, and saw a barn owl sweeping low over the meadows.

A good ride—thanks to Martin for organizing it. I hope the rider who crashed is OK.

actually LEL is a reverse of MY route; I wuz there first  ;)

BTW, did anyone actually submit a Greggs Bakers (in March) receipt that had Newcastle-upon-Tyne as the address (I subsequently went into the Tesco Express to get Snickers+proper receipt, just in case)?

thanks; haven't checked the cards yet; I did stop there but being Organiser did not bother with receipts.

so far the only answer to the question "trees by canal" (yes I know it's not a canal Gareth!) i've checked is "lots"  ;D that control will probably not be needed next year (as wasn't Ramsey but I wanted to make sure peeps did not use the extremely busy and fast A roads)

Many thanks Martin; super ride. Last year I enjoyed in spite of the weather. This year felt like a dream come true. You are right about the headwind; much better a NE than a SW, and better to be windy than wet. I'm looking forward to the tulips next year.

The only dampener to a great day was hearing about the injured rider. I hope he's ok now.

This was my first 200 of the year, so I expected to find it a bit tough going.

Waiting on the station, I met two others obviously headed to the same place - curiously, we were all on Dawes machines. There were other riders in the carriage, and, on arrival at Huntingdon, a dozen or more of us piled out of various carriages and joined the throng in the car park, so obviously quite a few had come all the way up from London.

Having hung onto a group driven mostly by Little Wheels and Big OTP two years ago, and knowing that we again faced a headwind to Lynn, my plan was to find another nice group this time. It worked to March (may have been scottlington's group - I remember seeing some Sudbury riders), but I wasn't as quick as some in visiting Gregg's, and thereafter rode mostly alone.

Lynn was my low point. I ate my omelette rather slowly, trying to recover a bit, and to be sure that I could continue to Spalding. The ferry was fun - must have been about ten of us, including the Norwich riders (sounds as though gustibus may have been on that ferry - I was the one who had to be chased for payment...), and we thought they wouldn't let us all on at once, but bikes were piled everywhere with good humour, and we made it across.

The loop to Spalding was a game of two halves. Another battle with the wind, but just something to be ground through, and then, after the information control, no pedalling really needed. It was pleasant to sit in the sun at the cafes at both Lynn and Spalding, and I felt much better at the latter than I had two years before.

I was looking forward to the run back to Huntingdon. Even if Gareth didn't find anything worthy of a picture, I know it from previous rides, and it can be good fun wind assisted. In fact, though, the wind was a bit more easterly than in 2012, and, whilst mostly easy going, it didn't quite live up to my hopes.

It was good to see Canardly at the finish. Nearly two hours slower than last time, so a bit disappointed with that, but an enjoyable ride all the same.

Looking forward to the challenge of my first 300 next week...

Strange, I followed your rear tyre closely for a long time but didn't spot it. It would have been a good opportunity to justify that I carry a spare tyre.

Hung around at the pub for an hour after finishing in the hope there would be someone to take the cards but no ones showed up

I assume the rider down lost it on one of the hairpin descents - I hope he is ok.

I arrived at half 3ish. There was a table of about 6 of us until 4:30 so we were quite obvious. When I got home I noticed I had some impressive salt streaks down my face so it was obvious we had been on a ride and not just down the shops. Not sure what the bar staff must have thought!

Still a nice way to finish off a ride, sunny courtyard and a few pints of ale to finish off the day. Martin, I'll send you the scan of the evidence from work tomorrow.

It killed me for the Bishops Stortford hilly today - need to focus a bit more.

OK; bunnies and also a bonus Easter egg for each rider all bought  :P entries filling up nicely although I doubt it will fill up being an X event as long as I have enough cards. Finish controller hopefully booked so you can all enjoy whatever 70s disco music was going on at The George last year

sadly no tulips this year too early in the year to risk re-routing; but there may be some on the normal route

this year for the first time it's also a PBP qually, you never know  ;)

I am looking forward to this with excitement mixed with anxiety. Did my first 200 last year (triple reservoir out of Oundle) however I have done very little cycling for the last 3 months due to illnesses etc.  just back on the bike this week so I will start building up by doing some 100's down in hilly Dorset.
I shall probably be lanterne rouge but hey ho.

It's an easier ride than the Reservoirs - must be one of the flattest Audaxes around. Can be hard into the wind though.

Yup. Flat does not always mean easy! Get even a moderate headwind on a looong section of flat road and you would kill for a hill! This makes it a good ride for groups to form and work together though so turns out to be quite social (at least it was for me last year).

The other thing I find with flat rides is comfort - any aches on pains from the saddle area really are shown up on flat rides like this as there is little opportunity for getting out of the saddle and keeping up momentum.

I shall be there again this year, really enjoyed last year's ride.

Route check ride done yesterday. No missing signposts or problems with the route found.
A couple of short temporary one-way passages controlled by temp traffic lights. But nothing
problematic. The little King's Lynn ferry ran according to schedule and no signs of upcoming
disruption of service posted. So looks all fine for Easter Saturday.

Yesterday's ride was nice but challenging with the very hard cold wind from the North. Must
have been close to 30 mph deep out in the Fens and in the Northernmost part along the Wash.
So 120k of head and crosswinds and 80k with tail and tail/crosswinds. Ended up as much as
3h 45m slower than last year when I cruised around in 8 hours flat! Hope the riders will enjoy
a bit warmer and less windy conditions in two weeks. But it's a great ride regardless, unique
in it being so flat and with the vast open landscape to watch. I will also help out at the finish,
collecting cards at the George hotel pub in Huntingdon before Martin arrives to take over!

wind or no wind 200 dead flat km is not that easy, no freewheeling for the whole ride means you are literally moving all day. But having said that it's one of the easier rides compared to some I could mention. Save something back for the last few km when it does climb a couple of hills near Upwood;

the section South from Thorney is as dull as a very dull thing I admit, one suggestion to break the monotony was to take it via Holme Fen the lowest place in the UK at 4m below sea level but that would be at the expense of other bits of the ride like Guys Head and the bulbfields around Saracen's Head which I think are worth including  8)

I've only ridden this once but enjoyed it a lot. The flat route makes it easy for groups to ride together, chat and help each other through bad patches. Usually on British brevets, the hills blow groups apart just as the conversations get more interesting than 'Nice day for a bike ride.'

You're probably going to be really upset with me. I look forward to the bit back from Thorney, partly because I knew it from a number of rides out to Skegness before I first did the Double Dutch, and partly because you often get some wind assistance. Once I get to Spalding, I feel I'm home. It's Guy's Head and beyond that I don't look forward to because it's always such a grind

I won't be using the ferry as i don't fancy carrying a very expensive 24kg machine down steps in cleats, despite it looking canoe like it doesn't float, well not for long anyway!

Oh no! I carried my bunny all the way round. I think I enjoyed it more than the only other time I rode it (two years ago). This time I had two Costa stops, the ferry ride, cycled a lot of it with a good companion (nightrider), and spent an hour in the George at the end, having soup and a pint of beer (could have drank more, but then I wouldn't have cycled home). Cold beer waiting in the fridge now. Thanks Martin!

Great ride, my first 200 since July (sciatica).Hard slog up to Kings Lynn, but Bikerbilityman dragged me up. Nice ferry ride despite nearly falling down the steps. Then my bowels turned to liquid and had to stop at Spalding to find a loo.Dragged my white face self to Thorne and ate a bag of Walkers crisps and drank a milk shake. Then met a strong group of riders who helped me back to the finish. Never underestimate the kindness of the AUK riders! The pint and chat at the George was nice as well ;D

I did this last year and enjoyed the ride despite the tough headwids.  This year I was accompanied by a friend 'because it was flat'.  He didn't realise that riding on the flat is actually quite tough as your legs never get micro rests when cruising down hill.  I'd also say you have to be mentally tough as well as the long straight roads can be a bit wearing.  I'm particularly thinking of the road south of Whittlsey.

The wind was tough going up to King' Lynn and then we was robbed as the 16-20 mph headwind became a trivial 4 mph tail wind.

We enjoyed chips in Thorney.  If I ride again next year I'm going to give the retail park a miss and aim for a cafe in Spalding itself.

I had two close misses by cars entering Huntingdon.  One a car tried to turn left across the cycle path just as I was  starting to cross the road.  The second at the left turn where we cut across the road shortly before the finish, a car behind me at the traffic lights tried to overtake on the bend and had to stomp on his brakes when he finally realised I was going straight on.

After my comments above, I really tried to enjoy the bit to Holbeach St Matthew, but without much success ;) Spalding to Crowland is still the best bit really.

I didn't really have the legs for this. I enjoyed the bit into the wind, almost all the way to King's Lynn, and was pleased to get there in four hours. Somewhere after Nordelph, I picked up another rider who was having a rough patch, and towed him for a bit. Then he towed me into Lynn as I tired. He was a resident, so offered me beans on toast at his flat

After that I was OK into Walpole Cross Keys, but after that he nursed me round, adding what must have been an hour to his time. Much appreciated if you're reading this. We finished just after lighting up time.

It really was rather unfair to do 75 miles into the wind, only to have it drop...

The day before, I had marshalled a sponsored walk, mostly on cycle paths. A four or five year old got round seven or eight miles on a balance bike, and was still grinning at the end. I reckon we've a future Audax rider there ;D

just back from a great weekend; no ride today after yesterday's Black Magic  :o

we had 77 riders on the road with AFAICT just one DNF. I've just donated £1 per rider to Help for Heroes by way of thanks to the Lynn ferry operators who did a sterling job getting us all on and off the ferries;

next year's event will be on the slightly earlier March 27th 2016, so no tulips that will have to wait until 2017  8)

many thanks to Lars at the finish too

A great ride and a great day out. As expected, the pesky headwind made itself felt on the way out to Kings Lynn but was never actually that bad. It then did the standard Audax thing of dropping and turning as we headed back so became a slight crosswind.  ::-)

I bobbed and bounced along with several small groups until about halfway through the first leg where I was passed by a train consisting of John Greenways and Orange Andy (OTP I believe) and several others - Adam, Luke and Emma. I decided to jump on but they were setting a furious pace and I was about to slide graciously off the back when they too decided to ease up. It then settled into something we could all hold nicely and I spent the rest of the ride in their great company with everyone taking a share of the work.

We had a fab (and leisurely) café stop in Lynn with some wonderful homemade sausage rolls and quiche then decided against the ferry and used to road route out to Holbeach. At Spalding we also used some local knowledge to stop a the garden centre instead of the official control and then a great run back to Huntingdon for a nice easy finish about 18.15 and a well deserved pint!

Thanks guys for the great company, to Lars for manning the control and to Martin for another thoroughly nice day out. I definitely recommend this ride - what it lacks in hills (less than 200m climbing recorded for the entire route!) it more than makes up for in sociability.

Having joined this forum I can now add my two peneth. I was initially anxious about this as it was my longest ride to date. However off I went into the great unknown but soon found some riders at my pace. Found it pretty windy to kings Lynn but it soon dropped off after. Some how missed the windmill at Moulton as went on the main road to spalding where I stopped at maccyD for sustenance. Enjoyed the bit down to Crowland and was impressed with the Abbey.
Got back to Huntingdon just avoiding a motorcycle vs car accident and sunk a pint and a half of Guinness.
Thoroughly enjoyed my day and the company and look forward to my next 200.

The windmill sort of sprung up by accident; I hadn't seen it before I used the road through Moulton to avoid the busy A151 but one year I noticed it had got its sails back, apparently a "sponsor a slat" type thing paid for by locals, I'll try to find a route that shows it better next year

I saw the aftermath of the accident, think the rider was able to sit up, heaved a sigh of relief that it wasn't someone on my event; having had to help load someone into an ambulance last year.

2016 event open for business as a couple of entrants have noted already  :)

it's the 26th March; far too early to be heading up to York  ;)

I'll probably break with tradition and ride the day before unless I find a finish controller

This will almost certainly be the case as we have very sadly lost last year's helper  :(

And this year none of your Lidl bunnies, only the best for each rider  :P better go and get another 40 before they go up

Thanks

One of the best rides in the calendar for sociability I have found. Given the lack of hills and prevalence of wind, groups tend to form and stick together most, if not all, the way round sharing the workload. With the best will in the world the fens can be a little uninspiring :P but the social aspect more than makes up for it.

Looks like wind will be a highlight of the day on Saturday if the predictions are to be believed. Monster tailwind on the run out followed by an absolute grovel back to Huntingdon. I'd be very happy to get in a decent sized group for the ride back, share the work. I know the return roads from Spalding well and I'm dreading being caught out there on my own with what looks like a 20-30mph block headwind!

Likely play it by ear once I get to Kings Lynn and look to join forces but if anyone does fancy sharing the load look me up at the start!

Looking like the first time I rode it as a DIY; only then I had 90k rain and headwind back from Boston.

Gail the Lynn ferry operator is expecting you all so say thanks if you take it across.

Note, trains from Spalding (if required) back to Huntingdon only run 1538 and 1657, the other services involve a bus

Martin - how many riders have indicated they are riding tomorrow? Given the forecast for Saturday I'd be up for switching to Friday but I love the social aspect of this ride and want to see if there are decent numbers. If there are only a few, I'll probably stay with Saturday (even though with 40mph headwinds predicted I'll likely not be able to pedal!).

SHould link to weather Bagel for Saturday http://goo.gl/4TZHGw   Updated 0500 25/3.  Note this is based on an average of 20kph, faster and you might miss the rain slower and you get wetter.  The wind however is consistent.  Les

There are engineering works (http://www.thameslinkrailway.com/your-journey/engineering/?date=26%2F03%2F2016) (scroll down more than half way) between Huntingdon and Peterborough. Looks as though trains are running during the day, but not after 7pm (nor early for those travelling from the north). Could affect late bail-outs including from Whittlesea - you'd get to Peterborough but then be faced with a replacement bus.

I've been looking at the rising wind forecasts and 45mph gusts. Not sure I'm up to returning through those across the Fens - but Martin has put the effort in and it's a good route.

Now considering an SCE (shortened calendar event) with a planned bail at King's Lynn and return by train, ducking the highest winds and the bit when they are against.

Cowardice, I know.
Title: Re: Double Dutch 200 Easter Saturday
Post by: scottlington on 25 March, 2016, 02:11:41 pm
I had figured I could bail as we pass pboro if it got too bad as I live just a mile or so off route. That'll still mean 50 k or so into that wind. Hoping to get into a group from kings Lynn so that doesn't happen but it's an option I'd considered. Sensible given the forecast to have such options.

Agree about the route, it's lovely and I'm going to ride as much as I can.

Well, that was a bit epic. Met all expectations I think. And then some. Having done it before I sort of new what to expect, but even so....

Getting to Kings Lynn was generally fast but the zig-zag route meant some unexpected headwind/crosswind sections, a foretaste for later. The leg to Spalding was a bit better than I'd expected - quite a lot of tailwind until 20km from Spalding. Avoided the control in the shopping centre - "no bikes". Very unfriendly. A dismal corner store was no better. Not a place I will look forward to visiting.

Then the fun began. Immediately out of Spalding there was a 6 mile section into the headwind, some of which was on top of a dyke. 18kph? Horrible. So Simon G and I stopped in pretty Crowland for a coffee and cake, then ventured out again. Lots more grovelling ensued, with little respite, and then after Thorney the legendary 12 mile straight lay in wait. Nightmare. That will live long in the memory, compounded by a broken spoke.
The final 15 km through the little rollers into Huntingdon was the icing on the cake, and we were so glad to finish. Empty legs. A quick pint (orange juice/lemonade) and then back to the car, just as the heavens opened. The drive home through the rain was indeed biblical, and I just hope those still out there in it get back safely. Appalling conditions.

Now to recover.....

Definitely a tale of two halves... a generally fast and easy run out to Kings Lynn, quick stop for some chips and then again a relatively easy ride to Holbeach for the turn.  The run into Spalding was not as bad as maybe I had feared but after a brief stop and look about to see if there were any groups I set off alone to tackle the last 40 miles.

Luckily I was quickly joined by another cyclist, a lurker on this forum but who's name I never got! Anyway, we rode together along the welland bank slowly slowly catching another lone rider who we eventually identified as Mike Lane. We caught up with him at Crowland and the three of us rode the rest of the way together.

A proper grovel back through thorney, Whittlesey ensued and then the 15k road through ponders bridge to Upwood. Once into the hills we had 15k to go and the end was in sight.  The weather still threw all it had but being so close it was fairly easily borne. That is until just 2k from the end where wrote got caught by the very heavy showers which left me like a drowned rat and really soured my mood.

Still, such stuff are memories made of! Pretty epic from.spalding, fairlying easy up to then. Thanks to my riding companions towards the end and to Martin and helpers for another fen showcase! Hill training? Just come here on a windy day!

Indeed that was me..

Grovelling along the top of some bank or other, desperately trying to STAY ON TOP, rather than flying off like a kite.....

All I could do to make 10 kph at times...

When the team got together it was much better, though I did little on the front, for two reasons.. Firstly because I'm so little I make a very poor windbreak, and secondly because I was completely pooped already from going it alone !!

It was indeed the last five minutes when it rained cats and dogs... I got completely drenched in that time, so ride straight to the car, ripped everything off, and redressed in 'civvies' which were warm n dry...

My thanks to Martin and Ann for the usual hard work !!!

Just back from the weekend; there are several dozen unclaimed bunnies (probably even more since yesterday knowing bunnies!) we had 20 finishers on Friday and 39 on Saturday

despite the awful weather yesterday afternoon all but one of the starters got back in time; it was quite sobering seeing a procession of drained souls' faces across the table at The George.

Those who chose Friday to ride got a much better deal such are the vagueries of Easter weather, there was a moveable headwind all the way round but it was much more bearable.

As regards the route, I think the river bank to Kings Lynn, Guys Head; the daff fields and the Welland bank back to Crowland are essential parts of the route and after that there isn't a realistic alternative to going straight back to Huntingdon. After Whittlesey remember Ponders Bridge and Ramsey St Mary as psychological waymarks which are the only places en route; but they do eventually appear to comfort you that your are actually making some progress. Other stations are not that convenient for London and this was another factor in devising the route having which began as a day trip DIY for myself. I did scout an alternative route East of Kings Lynn on Friday which would involve a Peterborough start; but it was a bit lumpy, busy A roads and I couldn't find the mythical tulip fields anyway (no sign of them not even shoots) so I'll keep the route as is for 2017 which will hopefully be far more pleasant conditions in Mid April

Thanks for supporting the ride!

Thanks for putting on the event Martin!

We were already out of time by the first control due to a combination of being 45 minutes leaving the start, relentless chain issues on the Hase Pino, bike set up stuff and the like.  The machine flies on the flat with a tail wind, but doesn't everyone?  Our speeds were stupidly high heading North, but it was inevitable the price would be paid later. We both knew we wouldn't be able to make it round the whole distance anyway by March as Rafe was having horrendous issues with the saddle which was properly damaging him and actually causing nerve damage, so we made the turn there, cut across to the return leg, and fought the headwinds home, having to stop every few miles to relieve discomfort.  It took us 7 hours to do 55 miles with all the stopping etc, so glad we made the sensible decision to bail. If we have flown up to King's Lynn we would have had a real BIG problem as I genuinely don't think we could have made it back, Rafe was in agony, and my riding position wasn't perfect either.  It was important for us to test the bike this weekend as we are away with it next weekend, so glad we found out all the problems rather quickly! A simple change of saddle and tweaking the set up, and we will be good for our holiday.

In other news, the bits of the route we did do were mostly wonderful.  I don't ever ride over the Eastern half of the UK, and those huge skies and endless flat fields really do make me feel small.  Got some pics, will post later

Yes that was me on Terence the Trike.  Great if shortened ride: not quite got the fitness for bent trikes as yet.  Looks like I have some cable trimming and tidying to do

Thanks to Martin and Ann for planning and running the traditional early-season event where the riders are taller than the hills. Apologies if I appeared slightly not-there at arrivee, that afore-mentioned shower hit me hard from the side just before Upwood and instantly went through all my clothing. It felt as if my temperature dropped a few degrees and there wasn't enough road left to warm me up afterwards.
At least I got the instructions how to find the station, the train was already waiting for me and I had a satisfyingly boring journey back to London. Some considerate passengers even saying "Don't bother to move your bike, we'll use the other exit".

The forecasts had promised a nice and easy ride up to King's Lynn and we weren't disappointed although after March we got the occasional cross wind and once or twice a preview of the headwind to come.

The view from the top of the stairs in King's Lynn was frightening and I wondered whether the risk assessment for the event had considered "riders getting blown off the stairs". Fortunately the railings had been put on the leeward side. On a day like yesterday I had expected to be given the full safety instructions on the ferry but the captain didn't even show location and use of the life vests.

Mainly cross winds till Holbeach St Matthews. Fortunately I had followed Ann's early morning instruction about the info control and didn't have to find out whether "Gone with the wind" is a valid answer when the sign post with the answer has disappeared.

Normally it's a time to relax when all info controls have been found and answered but yesterday that was when the work started. An Audaxclub Schleswig-Holstein rider once told me "headwinds are our hills" and there were moments when I had to stand on the pedals to keep moving (forward). Can I suggest that the formula for AAA points gets an additional term to consider the Beaufort scale?

Interesting how it got tougher after Spalding, first the dyke funnelling the wind, then the full exposure on top and rain after Crowland. At least the straight line from Pondersbridge to Upwood is less intimidating when it gets dark and you don't have to stare at infinity.

Despite all that I enjoyed the ride and was pleasantly surprised that the time for my 200 after a longish hibernation was in the expected range, esp. after reading the forecasts. Less company this time, previous instances were more social but yesterday was not a day where you could chat easily . The most interesting conversation I had was at the Ramsey info control: "If it says Bank on the building is it a financial institution, even if there is a notice in the window saying NatWest relocated?", "The route sheet says info opposite the T junction, is the Nationwide on the wrong side?", ....

Many thanks Martin and Ann for organising another epic event. Thanks also to Moritz; it would have been a lonely challenge out there without his ever cheerful company.
It’s worth noting that despite the apocalyptic conditions, the daffodils were the best I have ever seen, which is of course the reason for riding the Double Dutch.

I forgot to mention the steps down to the ferry....

Absolutely terrifying.....

I could barely stand because of the wind tunnel effect of the alley...

I was rapidly losing temperature due to the wind chill...

The steps were very steep and uneven...

The hand rail ran up the middle from the bottom as far as halfway up, but after that it shifted to the wall on your right as you descend... So you started your descent trying to hold onto the rail on the right hand wall...

This meant I had to carry my bike with my left hand until halfway, (which I never do because that's the hand I broke which has a weak grip strength) and then cross to the middle of the steps without anything to hold on to, hoping I would not get a bad gust at the wrong moment, and having been lucky and managed to grab the middle rail I then continued down...

But the ferry was against the steps on the left, and I could not grab it's rail because I had my bike in that hand, so I had to try and hold my balance whilst letting go of the safety rail completely, and then switch my bike to my right hand whilst trying to grab the rail on the actual ferry with the left hand, to get on...

Bear in mind the bike won't just hang still, but rather is twisting and turning in that horrendous wind, trying to pull me into the water....

All of this in S-Works 'walkable aero cleats' which do have some grip, but are more akin to ice skates than to rubber soled trainers...

Health and safety would have cried.....  I should have used the detour provided on the route sheet.....

It feels like infinity, but in fact you can only see as far as the horizon, and given that you are probably bent as low as possible over the handlebars in order to make progress into the wind, this is only about 2 km!

entries picking up well despite many of the Flatlander regulars riding to York instead (will wave as i pass you on the Friday) Lindt bunnies await

for those coming from That London the best train if you want to get breakfast at Spoons (the new start 1 minute from the station) is 0622 arr 0722. the slower 0634 are 0749 will still give you time, there will be someone there until 0830 for any latecomers, remember to buddy up for a GroupSave ticket (3 or 4 riders for the price of 2)

exactly the same route as last year (no excursion to the mythical tulip bulbfields east of Kings Lynn as i was unable to find them last year) apart from a very minor deviation at the end in order to be on the right side of the road for the finish.

The  'spoons start gives an opportunity for a pre -ride breakfast; but my experience is that it's usually pretty slow (although all you can drink coffee is usually pretty quick as all they have to do is take your money and hand you a mug!) There is another branch in March 44k which I always use; it's pan flat (ish) before then so no calories required!

I can do a big pre-order at the start if you text ;-)

I've tried to make that section interesting; The unmarked cyclepath which avoids a dodgy bit of the A17 (thanks ChrisS for that would not have known otherwise) Crosskeys Bridge, Guys Head, those bulbfields, Moulton windmill.  They even had planes flying at RAF Holbeach once on a route check

But point taken, I did try to scout a route east of Kings Lynn last year where they still have tulip fields but could not find them. And I had a suggestion to take the route to an info on Holme Fen (lowest place in the Uk at -4m) but it involves the outskirts of Peterborough. Worth seeing though.

I'm not sure that it's uninteresting. I like seeing different kinds of countryside. It just hits me at a point when I'm generally riding alone, especially after the bridge. I have to drive myself to get to the info control. After that, I feel I'm on the home run to Spalding. Except I'm not. That run only takes me to Moulton. Then from there to Spalding still seems a fair distance.

I don't really know why. It just seems unending.

But that's the challenge of the ride, and why I'll be back, of course ;D

well it is nearly 70k

most years it's been a bit of purgatory due to the crosswinds but finally ends in paradise when you turn for home at Holbeach. I was extremely lucky to avoid last year's strong headwind (having route checked the day before) but have had to contend with it on other occasions, including the first time I rode it as a DIY and had it all the way from Boston to Huntingdon

I rode the section from Ramsey to Spalding in reverse as part of my ride to Lincoln.   The wind was on my Left shoulder most of the way and then in my face from Boston to Lincoln.

Another great edition of this ride. New start point was welcome as was a quick catch with Manotea at the start. Saw a few other familiar faces too amongst a starting crowd of approaching 100 riders. I set off with first few and seemed to stay ahead of the curve from then on. A lovely quick run up to Kings Lynn before heading westish into the wind. Briefly rode with a couple of chaps who get on the ferry at the same time but the faster of the two rode the legs off me until I slipped gloriously of his wheel around Guys Head. The turn towards Spalding was actually harder I found and I was glad of the respite as we turned more due South towards Crowland. Rode the remainder of the ride with a chap called Mark, fairly new to audax but riding strongly. For back just after 1700 for a nice quick day out.

Thanks as always to Martin and all the helpers. See you next year!!

Caught up with several OTP including drossall, Manotea and Martin. Got round my first 200 since last August in acceptable shape, finishing in just over 10 hours. Now to get some fitness in for the bigger rides later in the year. I do need to tweak my position somewhat to accommodate my most recent physical idiosyncrasies. It would have been nice to have been able to use the drops yesterday.

New start location is very good, easy to find, close to station parking and the coffee was good
It's much more convivial than the old station start.

Ride itself was very enjoyable with some excellent views and enough sunshine to give me a burnt nose, although my nose represents a decently sized target...
The turn out was high so there was no shortage of company, especially on the way to Kings Lynn where some good groups formed.

Windy in sections, in particular just before Spalding, but I think it's the weather makes this ride interesting. I've done this four times and each time has been a very different experience.

Thanks to the org and helpers, an excellent day out  :)

So here it was, my first 200k audax. I had entered a couple at the beginning of the season but illness had meant I was unable to start. As this is my first ride report it is going to be a bit long winded and contain ride photos so I apologise in advance.

For me it was an early start of 5am and due to pre-ride nervous energy I didn’t sleep all that well. Still it was off to McDonalds for the first time of the day for breakfast. Back home changed into my cycling gear and off to the station to catch my 6:23 train to the start.

Whilst on the train got site of the terrain that would feature prominently on the ride.

The train arrived in Huntingdon at 8am sharp so it was quick ride to the start at Weatherspoon’s to pick up the Brevet card. The lady let me know that there was an issue with the GPX route so to be careful before King’s Lynn (thankfully I had spotted that when route checking the day before so had already updated my own file).

And then with the littlest of fanfare (i.e. none) I was off. Going out of Huntingdon I got chatting to one or two of the riders who told me about their Audax experience and got settled into my own rhythm. I knew it was going to be windy later so took it fairly easy. The miles ticked off and we were soon in Ramsey for the first Info control. Then back on the road to March where it appeared the majority were gathering at Costa. I headed a few hundred feet up the road to Gregg’s where a couple of cyclists were leaving but other than that it was dead. Second Bacon roll of the day polished.

Back out of March and past the rider in the Pink Rapha jersey that I would see several times during this part of the ride (usually as he was overtaking me). It was during this section that we were to ride along the long straight bank roads that are a unique feature of this area.

A few miles later and it was time for the next Info Control and a fellow rider was fixing a puncture at the side of the road. After making sure he was Ok it was off towards King’s Lynn. At times I thought I had entered the Green and Yellow Fields Audax.

A few hundred metres up ahead a few riders headed straight on when the route bared left. Knowing that audax gives riders the flexibility to choose their routes between controls I felt they probably knew where they wanted to go. However as they rejoined the route a short while later off a grassy track I suspected they may have taken a wrong turn. Again they made some distance ahead of me and then when we got to the point where the GPX was wrong they took the wrong turn but they were too far ahead for me to shout to them. When they came past me a bit later their bikes were covered with mud from their detour.

It was at this point I got chatting to a chap on a Blue Ribble (is there any other colour?!) who had travelled down from Derbyshire for his first 200k as well. Unfortunately for him after just a mile or so he had to pull up as he had got his second puncture of the day after having none for two years. I didn’t see him again so I hope he got back round Ok without any further mechanical issues.

In King’s Lynn it was a quick visit to Maccy D’s and then I took my food with me to wait for the ferry which as luck would have it had literally just left. Whilst waiting for the next one a group of riders started to arrive for the next ferry and a few minutes later we were packed on like sardines for the shortest boat ride I have ever been on.

I had prepared for the next section being tough but wow it really was quite windy. Over the next hour and half to the next Info control I yo-yo’d with the same handful of riders. I was behind one chap for quite a while but I knew if I went faster to overtake him I would probably blow up but the wind was too strong to chat to him so I remained behind so I hope he didn’t think me rude. Whilst riding along the bike path by the A17 I noticed that I had crossed the halfway point. Just another few miles (sorry I still find it hard to think in KM having always used miles when cycling) till the next Info.

However at this point my biggest problem when long distance riding reared its head. Hot Feet. Pulled over to take out my insoles and all the riders that came past checked I was Ok. A short while after finally got to the Info Control. The question was about how many windows and whilst we were stood counting them up the lady came out of the house to ask us why so many cyclists had stopped outside her house today. We explained that we were on a kind of treasure hunt and her house marked the furthest point north. She asked is this for Charity and was no doubt perplexed why anyone would cycle up from Huntingdon for no particular reason other than wanting to go on a long bike ride.

I had hoped the slight change of direction would give a bit of relief from the wind. How wrong was I. This was the slowest hardest part of the ride often struggling to go above 10 mph. It was tough but after an hour of that the Golden Arches of Spalding appeared at the side of the road and it was time for my third Mc Dougal’s of the day.

It was here that I meant the legend (his words not mine) Big Saxon in his ACME jersey. He explained that he was now drinking milkshakes for the rest of the journey. The lady cyclist who turned up at about the same time said that if we didn’t get a tailwind soon she didn’t know if she could continue. She asked Big Saxon to help her get through Spalding and off they went. A quick visit to the rest facilities, shoes back on and it was back off where I would ride pretty much the rest of the way on my own.

At first it was pretty quick going and then the road took the riders back up on to a bank and then it was back to trundling along at 10 MPH or so. After a few miles of this the road finally turned left and at last no more headwind-yay. At this point my GPS kept on dropping out and I found myself getting a bit frustrated and also hoping I might see some other riders so at least I knew the right way which was when I could see another lone rider a few hundred metres ahead. I was gaining on him slowly in what must have appeared the world’s slowest bike race.

At Thorney it was time to take my shoes off again and I also decided to plug a power pack in the GPS as it was down to 25%. As soon as I did that the GPS stopped dropping out and the routing worked the rest of the way back.

Back on the road and on the finishing straight- literally the next 20 miles sorry 30k was completely straight and when the road finally turned it was for something that I had forgotten about as there had been none since nearly ten hours ago-Hills though not very big ones but hills none the less. I had a bit of a second wind at this point and I was blasting up them so that when I got to the bottom of the steepest climb of the day I just went all out.

And of course what goes up must come down and once into Huntingdon it was downhill almost all the way to the finish and even all the traffic lights bar the last set were on green allowing me to fly along for the last bit. And then that was it the finish of my first 200k.

It was 7:10pm which was just outside the 7pm target I had set and the 9 hours actual riding time was bang on my target meaning that there is time to gain by speeding up the controls. All in all it was an enjoyable day out and I thank the organisers for this (though had the route gone clockwise instead it may have been more enjoyable) After getting my card validated it was off the the train station to catch the train home. Well done Martin and Ann (and others), my second time and will be back again.

So, with so much wind, how come so few wind turbines en route?

First 200 since my minor difficulties last year, lots of people to thank and mention after such a fine day out.

A full station car park and crowded Wetherspoons was testimony to the attraction of the ride so superbly organised by Martin and Ann, this year I got the smaller bunny as it was not my special birthday. Meeting up with Huggy I mentioned that I had stupidly left my gloves at home, and with such a cold start and taking bloodthinners for my condition I was in trouble. Huggy kindly lent me his winter gloves, which I was able to squeeze my giant mitts into, and away we went on what is now a familiar route.

At March I called in at Costa, last year I was the only one in there on the Friday, but it is no longer a secret. sat down with Mike from Kettering to eat my 593k piece of carrot cake and a latte, before we set off together for Kings Lynn. The gloves were off, literally, I manged to peel them off and not need them again. Along the road Mike was riding behind and commented on the legendary Big Saxon calves, apparently they are awesome but I do not get to see them. Shortly before Kings Lynn we picked up another new rider from Cambridge, and I navigated them both in past Chernobyl, before joining many other riders at the cafe in Kings Lynn for a belated breakfast. Soon we were joined by John Thompson, I ensured that he was served quickly by our friendly young waitress. Mike decided to take the ferry experience, I went back to the bridge and rode with HK for a while, before her three wheels disappeared, only to reappear later due to the GPX  explorer detour.

I did not see Mike again, maybe he got the ferry quickly, so the drag to Spalding was solitary apart from the gathering at the info control, briefly meeting HK again. Headwinds are not too much of a problem when you are my size and used to fighting gravity, but it did get strong around Cowbit/Moulton. Into McDs for the banana milkshake, then joined by Stevie and Hazel, who asked me nicely if she could ride with me through Spalding, and so the two of us rode into the last sections, stopping at Whittlesey for refreshments. Hazel was a bit faster than me, and with the chest sending me signals I just eased back and kept her in view through Ramsey st Mary before catching up. We then passed Stevie with his shoes off, easing his hotfoot, and then he passed us on a mission to finish quickly.

And so into Huntingdon, arriving at 7.16pm, quite relaxed , and had a brief chat with HK  and others before driving home, drinking the last milkshake on the way. My Team MK colleague Bikeabilityman sent me an Arrows update, he is getting close to his Brevet 25000.

Another step in my recovery, I am now ready for G&Y 300 in three weeks, A&S 400 in June, and Raymond wants to complete a SR before LEL, so possibly Flatliner 600 in June to complete the Essex SR after years of trying. I will be back next year for this event, maybe as the Medium Sized Saxon, that would be interesting if the wind stays away.

Windy in sections, in particular just before Spalding, but I think it's the weather makes this ride interesting.
I guess that's the truth of it.

I knew that KL-Spalding would be the hardest bit, so tried to ride a bit conservatively. As I have done before, I slipped off the group towards the top of the hill out of Huntingdon (I never did do hills), and rode mostly alone after that, but seeing various familiar faces along the way. I think LWaB and HK, among others, were at the first info?

Later, LWaB and another came by approaching Nordelph. LWaB gave me a friendly push (is that allowed?) as they came by, but I wasn't going to try to hang onto their wheels. HK appeared a few miles later, and then what I think was a CTC group. As we turned at Stowbridge, I got an insect in the mouth, and was stung on the lips for my trouble - sorry to anyone I surprised with my shout!

The run to KL had passed really quickly - must have been something to do with the howling gale behind, and even turning north didn't seem too bad, so I began to hope that the next leg might be OK too. False hope. There was a bit of confusion about the GPX track onto the cycle path, but I knew the route from previous years, so was among those confirming that we needed to go a little further before leaving the road.

HK joined me for lunch, and indeed the riders seemed to have taken over half of the cafe. Three of us set off together for the bridge route out of town, but I soon slipped off, just as another group (mainly CTC again, I think) joined from the ferry. They gradually headed off up the road, and then Manotea came by. I sat on his wheel for a few miles, before concluding that I couldn't keep that up and expect to finish.

I think stevie63 must have come by soon after Sutton Bridge, and a few miles later I saw him giving his feet a break, then again a few miles after that. There was a bit of a crowd at the top info, and indeed Martin came by as well and confirmed the answer to the control. A bit discouraging though to hear some others saying what good time they had made into the crosswinds.

Heading into Spalding, I really began to have doubts. At some points, I gave up fighting the wind, and was down to a 6-7mph crawl. Another group came by, and I said to them that I might pack at Spalding. Having finally got there (it took three hours from KL), however, it seemed daft to miss out on the wind-assisted bit.

I wandered towards Costas, but was told by a guard that I couldn't take my bike into the shopping area. I had half-recalled something about that from a previous year, but couldn't see any signs. I responded that they couldn't have our custom then ;D and repaired to the coffee stall where other riders had gathered.

Continuing was a good decision. As expected, the run out of Spalding, and then from Crowland to Thorney, was among the best bits of the ride. Although the wind was less helpful after that, I still plodded along quite happily. I passed a group that I had seen before, dealing with some incident, just before Ramsey Heights, and they passed me again around Upwood. I kept them just about in sight into Huntingdon, and then used my weight penalty to good advantage to catch them on the descent, so that ultimately we finished together in 12 hours.

Always a ride worth doing, even if it doesn't seem so when I'm trying to reach the top control

A few miles later and it was time for the next Info Control and a fellow rider was fixing a puncture at the side of the road. After making sure he was Ok it was off towards King’s Lynn.

Pretty sure this was me, at the Nordelph info control - many thanks for the offer of help. And Bill on the blue Ribble did make it although I believe he ended up with 3 punctures on the day, but we joined up just before Spalding and completed the rest of the route together

Thanks for all the comments;

Spoons definitely a good move for a start / finish location I think we increased their trade 50 times that early in the morning! HK should have wheeled her trike in to fit it with the locals! (I see there have been similar comments elsewhere about the one in York) but it didn't cause a problem they were glad of the business and we were probably replaced by a similar number of non cyclists as soon as the ride started. I found the wind very taxing after the ferry until Spalding (not least because I also rode it on Good Friday) but there was a sort of psychological if not actual tailwind after that.

Next edition 31st March 2018 (Whether that's Easter Saturday or not I don't know but it's the day before Easter Sunday and also the week after the clocks go forward)

I'd miss all the other Arrow teams if I did that and part of the fun is meeting all the other teams at the finish.  Guess I'll have to do these separate years.

I get riders every year saying they are doing an Arrow so will miss out, that's unfortunate but this event is IMO a success because it's a rare calendar 200 on Easter weekend (such is the SR-centricity of the AUK calendar)

some Arrow riders have had a year off and ridden DD

I have thought about doing a Summer Dutch but having never been up there in the summer I'm thinking it might just be cauliflowers! will find out when I'm up there helping for LEL

It was me! Sorry I couldn't eat with you at KL stevie63 I was looking forward to sheltering behind you on the route to  Spalding  ;D. I didn't get to eat as by the time I faffed about looking for somewhere to buy an inner tube I was almost too late to get a receipt. Your ride sounded much more fun than mine and it makes me look back a bit more fondly on it now. Maybe I will do it again next year, although I swore not again in the day!

Adrian invited me to eat with him at MD's after working hard together to get to spalding and although I didn't want to eat it was just what I needed. Thanks Adrian for keeping me motivated and it was a pleasure riding with such a gent. Definitely feel good about finishing it. I was looking for you after validation to offer you a drink but you scarpered I think as your bike was gone. Maybe next time.

Also thanks to the other guys in KL who gave me a co2 canister and let me use a foot pump. The puncture demons were targeting me big time on sat.

Hi Bill, it was a pleasure riding with you and hope to meet up again on a future audax, apologies for the unceremonial departure but it was juniors birthday and I had to scarper.

An observation on McD's, normally I find them fairly revolting, breakfast wrap is Okish but the burgers  but I have to say after a few hours in the saddle they taste really quite ok  ;D

You're welcome.  It was my minitrack pump and my friend Ian's CO2 cyclinder.  I must admit you looked truly despondent in KL so that must have been quite a psychological barrier you got through to finish.  Quite a tough first 200km.

I rode the route as a DIY this weekend, the first time I've not ridden it in the spring. Although there were a few poppy fields and generally kinder weather I can confirm that it's not a great ride in the summer. The main reason for the ride is to enjoy the spring blooms both in the fields and alongside the route. Cabbages and potatoes (with the dead remains of daffs) are not really that nice to observe, therefore I won't be making it into a perm although I can supply a DIY (SE) brevet number if required

Entries just hit 50 but that could well double by the day.

I think the cold weather will have delayed the daffs so there will hopefully be millions to delight you.

as well as a little bunny for each rider there will also be a free Bun-bola at the end to win some bigger Lindt lovelies

Alas, I forgot about this ride when agreeing to join an arrow team again. Next year!

Still possible to enter and complete  next weekend Double Dutch 200km.

Just do your planned 400km route  to York on Thursday evening say 7pm. Arrive in York on Friday evening by 7pm. Set off to Huntingdon for 250km in 13 hours, start the DD event at 8 am. Complete the 200km event and finally ECE home.

I guess...this challenge is not beyond your capabilities!

Nice thought but DD and EA are incompatible sadly. I've had quite a few riders who have done both events and indeed have personally met many of them going the other way on a Good Friday route check.

It will always be an Easter Saturday event as otherwise no bunnies and where's the fun in that? it's also a rare and very popular 200 in a sea of 300s that time of year so the day is set.

and there will not be a perm version from me it needs to be ridden in Spring to fully appreciate the route, big open skies; bulbfields, clear views across water, coast and young crops, hedgerows birdsong etc...

there's always next year!

Yes I was thinking about you following the advice about getting into Kings Lynn and the cyclepath; not exactly sure whether it means you have to cross the river twice if you don't take it but sounds like it. The car / motorbike trap is very soon after the Chernobyl manouevre and IIRC there is only one before you reach the road by the bridge) so you'll soon find out; it is possible to get to Kings Lynn on the other side if you take a wrong turn before Wigginhal St Germans (DAMHIKT!)

not sure if the lady last year is bringing the trike

7 6 cards left!

Thanks Martin, I'll have a closer look at the route and improvise if things look awkward, I did the ride back in 2014, or 2015, so I will also look at my ride for then, I'm sort of used to getting into places where a double back is required or recruiting a couple of sherpas to help me over barriers, all part of the fun  :)

Lower leg nerve issue has put pay to my riding today. Yesterday's 115km in the rain blew the foot and ankle apart again with unbearable amounts of pain.   I'm told this kind of stuff happens and to man up.   All getting a bit old after 6 weeks of nerve issue, dropped foot and total loss in upward power. Apparently the NHS are not in any kind of hurry to resolve this.

Hope those who rode have had a great time.

I managed to hit a lot a rain from Moulton all the way down to just north of Huntingdon, when I left check point charlie after not winning a bigger bunny it started again, at least i had a nice shower stripping off in the carpark.

I was glad I was on 3 wheels a couple of times with all the mud and crap that was about.

As usual a big hand to the "support crew" sorry I don't know your name.

When I got home at about 4:30 there was a really strong N wind blowing so hope that helped those still out.

the turn where the tailwind was very apparent and welcome.
Best daffodil fields I'Ve seen on the Crowland road. And a great finish venue complemented by tulips

Rain, what rain? Those at the tailend didn't see much other than an occasional bit of drizzle
Though I did get a proper soaking afterwards :hand:
Stayed at the Travelodge Sat night, they continue to impress, had to persuade them it'd be a good idea to give me a bin bag to stand the dirty dripping bike on, totally unfazed.
Many thanks to Martin for organising, very much my sort of route, I like to tour round the rides I do and there was plenty of interest.  The daffs were a bonus, but there's plenty of other stuff to make this a worthwhile ride any time of year, there's bits of it I shall ride again.

Entries nudging 75 a bit down from previous years but I expect a lot of peeps are going for a 300 instead;

which will it be this year a headwind out or back? (it's never been from the E or W)

The ferry operators are still going and looking forward to welcoming you aboard.

Please be courteous (and careful!) as you pass the foot passengers on the steps down and up.

There will be someone at the start after 0800 if anyone's on a later train

They've changed the cycling route a bit in Kings Lynn town centre but still best to follow the route along the river bank as per the route sheet.

Weather looking good.

I'll believe gentle N winds off The Wash when I see it!

Just one alteration from the route check; the second R@T before Holbeach St Matthew info has no signpost, but it's Eastern Road

Weather's looking good. This will be my first 200km since the big 7zero, so I will definitely be saying Hi to Fidgetbuzz.
No need for anyone to worry too much about the Mont de Whittlesea - when I lived there as a child it was 3 feet above sea level and I don't think it has moved much since then. The spelling of Whittlesea might be a clue to something or other.

I'd entered but now can't make it  :(
Enjoyed it last year and was looking forward to it, maybe some other time.
If anyone fancies staying over I have a Travelodge room booked just up the road in Fenstanton that's now going spare. PM me if interested.

Sorry to say .. I will not be there .. I swore that Nic's Cambridge ride was my last audax .. no compelling reason to do a Redgrave yet.... but just maybe maybe. Now significantly closer to 80 than 70.. so you still have a fair bit of catching up to do !!!!

I've taken Martin's excellent gpx track, added the controls as waypoints and broken it into two parts (with King's Lynn being the split). If anyone wants them the files are here:

Part 1 to King's Lynn: https://sites.google.com/site/youngadamski/200s/Double%20Dutch%20%282019%29%20Part%201.gpx

Part 2 back to Huntingdon: https://sites.google.com/site/youngadamski/200s/Double%20Dutch%20%282019%29%20Part%202.gpx

Thanks for the great organisation, relatively new to audax and really enjoyed the route  - glad the headwind was during the outward leg! Tulips next year sounds good.

The Team MK duo (although one of us was in ACME kit) thought we were lanterne rouge on the way back to ‘spoons, but we were pipped at the post (in reverse) by another pairing. It was great not having the following headwind I remember from the last time I did this.

A quick hello to Caroline who I rode with from just after Holbeach St Matthew to Crowland.  Could you please drop me a PM.

Having ridden the Double Dutch several times over the past 6-7 years, Saturday's ride was a golden moment of enjoyment.  Just a slight reminder of the awfulness that could have been with a slight headwind as we rode from King's Lynn to Holbeach St Matthew. I also  think the general advise for the ride is missing the recommendation to bring a jigsaw puzzle for the Crowland to Ramsey Heights stretch, Que Sera Sera.  A marvelous day's ride in place of something that has in past years been a true ordeal.

As I've said before, including to Martin at the finish, the run home from Spalding, including that stretch, is in many ways my favourite bit. Partly because it's the bit I know best, and partly because you can see the finish approaching. In Saturday's clear weather, I got my first view of the Ramsey Heights on the descent from Whittlesey. The run to Crowland along the banks is always good. And the two short hops to Thorney and then Whittlesey leave you with the Heights getting ever nearer.

I really enjoyed my day out...Nice to have a very public transport friendly start location and time, there was a small posse of us on the 06.18 from Kings Cross.
I spent the first 10km or so getting rapidly passed by most other riders, top marks for making me feel like my bike was anchored to the ground go to Dick and Dave on the flying tandem. Then a solo-ish ride most of the way to March, although there was a flurry of interaction with other riders at the info control in Ramsey and a chat with a rider from Peterborough in a CTC jersey. More interaction at Costas in March which seemed a fairly popular choice for those wanting a sit down control rather than a quick convenience store receipt. Setting off again, the headwind seemed to be strengthening all the way towards Kings Lynn and the sea (at least I hope it was that rather than my legs getting tired). Not long before the intriguing "Chernobyl style" building I suffered an appalling close pass by a black people carrier which appeared just inches from my elbow - I think the problem is that with a headwind, you just don't hear them coming up behind. I suspect others may have suffered the same fate as although I was riding on my own there will have been people not far ahead or behind me.

I met up again with some of the Costa crew (HK, Big Saxon, Bikeabilityman and others I can't put names to) in Kings Lynn centre and had a cafe lunch, and by now it was getting pretty hot. I chose the ferry option to cross to West Lynn and happily arrived just at the right time so straight on with no waiting, just a shame it was low tide as those steps were quite hard work! I loved all the mini Crosskeys bridge "motifs" in Sutton Bridge, but I didn't love the headwind sections that followed. Every time the route turned right the effort level required went up several notches, while a left hand bend resulted in temporary relief. Fortunately approaching Holbeach St Matthews some thoughtful people had planted hedges so things did improve and eventually I arrived at the farm info control and turn. Whilst I scoffed a banana and emptied a water bottle, others arrived and I rode off southwards with Steve - our pace seemed compatible and it was nice to have someone to chat to, plus with the wind now helping us riding suddenly felt much more enjoyable. We stayed together through to Spalding where his previous knowledge recommended McDs rather than the shopping centre and then on to Crowland where I decided to stop for icecream (must be good calories surely). While I admired Trinity Bridge and consumed a Magnum, Alistair from Dulwich Paragon arrived and in due course we set off together, again good to have company on the road and we rode together to the finish. Chatting made the "for an eternity" section south of Whittlesey go much quicker and it seemed like no time at all before we arrived at Ramsey Heights and had to remember how to turn a corner and change gear! The swoop down into Huntingdon put a smile on our faces and soon we were back at the pub to be greeted by the organisers and our chance to win in the bun-bola.

Many thanks to Martin and Ann and to all those whose company I enjoyed, and apologies for the shock caused by me riding my own bike for a change.

No people carrier but I did get close passed by a tractor somewhere in the first half which was a bit distressing. But that was the only blemish on a nice friendly ride; my thanks to the organisers and the other riders.

that's pretty much how the event started; I'd been to the real other Holland in spring many times and wanted to create a 200 around the English version a convenient train ride from London. Huntingdon is the furthest North you can go on a Gold / Network railcard on the East Coast Main Line so that's where it started. I expected about 6 riders the first time and got 44

2020 is going to be the 10th anniversary special tulip edition so look out for Nederlandse Dubbele in the calendar  :)

I've had confirmation of the likely location of the fabled tulip fields; they are planning to open a field to the public for charity so I will take the route past this which should shorten the distance by a few k and will also be donating the surplus to this

I think the Lynn ferry has also finally changed hands

I'm very sorry but have no option but to cancel. It was either that or defer to a later date which is not appropriate for this ride.

I will keep the event live with no further entries in case anything changes

It's provisionally back on for next Easter Saturday 3 April subject to the usual Coveats:

groups of 6 riders
no Spoons start / finish
no ferry

but definitely Choc Bunnies!

All those entered this year have been ported over, extra entries open a month before the day  :)

It looks like the event is now OK to run. Not sure what the maximum number of riders will be. Currently 47 riders (transferred from 2020) although the lack of overnight accommodation is likely to result in quite a few riders deferring to 2022 so my be able to take more entries.

It's the lack of accommodation overnight that stops me entering: campsites unlikely to be open by then. A shame, as this has been on my list for years.

Yes, indeed, this is what The Man himself says:
"I am hoping this event will take place although it is subject to Government guidance on outdoor sport. Number of entries also yet to be decided.
Go to Holland for the day without having to quarantine! A flat tour of the Fen with waterways history and bulbfields. Special 10th anniversary edition of Double Dutch goes past the few remaining tulip fields in the UK and also the 'Cathedral of the Marshes' at Terrington St Clement. Chocolate Easter bunny included! In the event this event is cancelled it will be postponed to Easter 2022 and existing entries will be transferred. In light of overnight stay restrictions please email me if you entered for 2020 and would prefer to delay until 2022."
