MS Visio and alternatives.
« on: 28 October, 2021, 09:08:58 am »
I occasionally need to produce diagrams and plans for personal use.
Familiar with MS Visio UI so a brief browse.  Appears to indicate cost will be ££'s plus multiple other MS dependencies. Wondering about similar alternatives.
Any suggestions please?

Yes, could give Inkscape another go. I cannot remember exactly why but adid find it difficult to use.

It does have an unpleasant UI. Affinity Designer is a more substantial and better piece of software (at a modest price).

However, if just want to diagram, maybe something like LucidChart? It has a free option with a limited number of docs.

LibreOffice Draw is kind of like Visio. Quite useful for simple diagrams etc.

+1; You will need the desktop version: https://github.com/jgraph/drawio-desktop/releases/tag/v15.4.0

Inkscape is more of a vector graphics tool, and I think it's brilliant for that.
I would hate to use it for anything more than a very basic floor plan though.

have used draw.io a fair bit due it being in our JIRA build... I've been using Evolous Pencil a bit more recently but not sure if that meets the required use case

For simple diagramming Inkscape is probably a bit too much like hard work.
If you want programming type diags then, if it's still available, StarUML.

Dig around ebay and the likes. My copy of Visio is Visio 2003. Its moved from PC to PC over the years, uses a serial number printed on a label on the disk, does everything I need and so far Microsoft haven't killed it.

Yes, tried Inkscape and the open source contribution model it uses does show in a dogs dinner of a UI.

Corel Xara (and whatever the Acron program that it was based on was) would have been good for this sort of thing.  Most of the features seem to have made it into Inkscape, along with enough other stuff that puts it in the powerful-but-clunky-UI category previously occupied by GIMP.
