I laced up two wheels and have decided that all the 64 new spokes I bought today are 2mm too short.

Back to square one, I think.

I wouldn't. The process might be frustrating, but I think a round one is still best.

Does this count as fettling  ?

Washing your bike and then pack it down in a box so that it is ready for your traveling ?

As that is what I'm about to do cause we are going to Croatia tomorrow :)

Fiddled with the brakes on Miss Z's bike for an hour, then threw the whole lot in the bin and ordered some Deore V-brakes from eBay.

Not today, but Sunday evening.

Finally got Hellymedic's Pedersen back together, after having the frame modified a few weeks ago by that nice Chas Roberts.

And last night, tightened the chain on my fixie. It was very, very slack.

Checked all of my lights, changed and charged batteries, checked and moved brackets as needed. Winter draws on. Ho Hum

Just remembered another one:

Riding home from work I spied a friend and her young daughter. Said daughter was on a teeny bike with stabilisers. Friend mentioned that daughter had trouble getting the bike going. A quick glance showed that the stabilisers were set too low, so traction was minimal.  As luck would have it I was on my fixer, so had a 15mm spanner. A few minutes fettling and things were greatly improved.  Then I blew the tyres up, while the young rider held the dust caps.

An excellent few minutes work.

An excellent few minutes work.

And so a lifelong interest in fettling starts :)

(ps your post just made me smile.  Lots!)

I had a modest-sized erection in my garden.

It might have had something to do with this thread.

I put a new chain on my mtb.

It was a SRAM power chain which had power links

Remarkably it took no more than 5 minutes to take the old one off and put the new one on.

Theres got to be a catch!
O'LEL what have I done!

No, they don't have catches, you use a special link.

Fitted Deore V-brakes to Miss Z's bike, and took the opportunity to adjust the reach of the levers.

The bike now has a Sturmey-Archer AW rear hub, an achingly nice Suntour XC Pro front hub, rebuilt wheels with stainless spokes, Deore V-brakes and lights.

Gave the Thorn RT a bit of attention today

De-burred the teeth on the rear sprocket and tensioned the chain, it is now back to its quiet self.

And tensioned the B17.

And put some air in the tyres.

Thats it for six months now - sweet.

I've removed The Brooks from my Planet X sportive. On close examination it is showing signs that it might be ready to yield some time in the not too distant future.

New middle chainring, chain, cassette and rear tyre on the audax bike today, following the jaunt to Pembrokeshire.  I also gave it a good clean and check over, and it's now very happy.

On the Ridgeback: removed the butterfly bars (touring mode) and put the straight bars back on (commute mode.)

I just proofided the Flyer on the TRST. I also purple-extremed the chain.

Took my new to me Cheviot SE to bits, waxed the frame twice, put it back together and went round the block to check the saddle height.
I came back after 30k of hilly lane bashing round Saddleworth in the sun with a cheeky pub stop.

I also had a look at the creak on my Singlecross and found I've crushed the handlebars slightly by overtightening the clamp. New ones are ready to go on tomorrow. It's been creaking for over a month.

Just replaced the chain on my mountain bike and on the Soma put a new bracket on my Solidlight because the old one snapped.

Then some general checking over and wiping and adjusting ready for a 100 miler tomorrow

Drilled and sawed a seized FAG bottom bracket out of Mrs Z's Brompton.  I never want to do *that* job again.  Minimal damage to threads, but it's gone off to the LBS for new bushings and a tap running through the BB (no charge for the latter).

Bought some Marathon 20" tyres and put them on Miss Z's new bike.  Now she actually rides it, and has commented on how much faster and better at cornering they are than the horrible knobblies it came with.  She hasn't actually changed gear yet, but she likes the Sturmey-Archer tick-tick-tick in 2nd.

Installed a new bottle cage, and it didn't even come with instructions.

I guess I have a mechanical apptitude, you could call it a gift.
