It's bloody cold. I was thinking on 7th of this month that it was 45 years to the day that I passed my driving test. The temperature reached 80°F that day and it was the first hot day of the Glorious Summer of 1976.

The Long Hot Summer of 1976 got off to a rather cool start, I believe...

Cheers. I’m just learning birdsongs, and the chirpy one was one i was after identifying.

Fledgling starlings appeared in the garden today, about a fortnight later than last year's lot did.

Lovely picture. We've had Starlings for the first time this year. Half a dozen yesterday including a couple of fledglings.

Very irritating birds.  Had one round ours that could imitate a ring tone.

I once had a pet Jackdaw that would imitate our two dogs of the time barking in unison. Kept the local cats out of the garden.

It seems to me that cuckoos have been staging something of a recovery this year, based on an admittedly small sample. Ramsden Heath brother has reported multiple sightings, including in his garden and also two birds at once. Shropshire brother this morning reported the first Condover Cuckoo “for several years”. Pal Mel reported hearing one, quite loudly, in his urban garden, admittedly only half a mile away from a park where one has been singing merrily all spring. And even one of my neighbours reported hearing one in her back garden a week or so ago, and we are a good mile away from anywhere I would expect a cuckoo to turn up.

They're very conspicuous round here, but I think they always have been

"Spring" is stretching it a bit but there was a blackbird singing its fool head off in torrential rain at 04:45 this morning.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

For almost a fortnight I have been searching for snowdrops in the bit of park where they are wont to turn up early. I haven't seen any yet, but Sodding Facebook has sent me a sequence of reminders of the first ones I've seen over a number of years. The earliest I have recorded has been 28th October I think.

The first snowdrops have flowered in Priory Park.

From 2 years ago.

Our snowdrops flower very late here. Mid Feb.  Which is strange when you see daffodils in early January.
I posted a picture on ACF, many years ago, of daffs on Christmas day flowering at our old place 5 miles from here.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

And bingo! The park keepers had been doing the rounds with the leaf blowers since my visit yesterday, so this may well have been hiding then.

Not sure if this is a sign of spring, or of winter being late, or more likely just one of those things that's part of hibernation, but saw a butterfly in our gardenlette today – think it was a red admiral.

Yes we've had a couple of those in the house this week.   I suppose they are looking for somewhere to over winter, so I feel bad about putting them out. But I do.

If you've had an unseasonably warm spell, that will often wake butterflies up. Forecasters are suggesting that Friday could be the warmest New Year's Eve on record.

Our 'lawn' is looking pretty lush and verdant for the season.

A couple of days ago I heard a song thrush having a good sing up near my son's house in rural north Essex.
