I saw a new variation on the greengrocer's apostrophe the other day, at the council tip. Attached to a charity book donation bin was a typed sign that said:

"Do not put video,s in here.

Or toy,s"

Just keep hitting the keys, you'll get it right one day....

Not quite spelling but will someone tell Channel 5 that, for the trails for their new series "The Hotel Inspector", the word they are looking for is 'restaurateur' not 'restauranteur'.

Possibly because  'Gramophone' and 'Gramaphone' were both brand names for machines that repoduced sounds.

'Gramophone' coming from the Gramophone Company in the UK and 'Gramaphone' was a variation of the trade name used at times in the US.

Someone has been working away at the shops on Upper Richmond Road in Putney but there's a lot of work to be done.

This sign at the post office has been corrected:-

But the tailors still has the opposite of the possessive apostrophe error: http://www.greenbank.org/misc/224.JPG

The Mailbox Etc two doors up has a big sign for 'STATIONARY' so plenty more to fix...

Oh, and the menu in the Harry Ramsden 'restaurant' attached to the Travelodge the at the Exeter M5 services had pints of 'Larger'.

I think a marker pen would be a better solution.

In 'the trade' we abbreviate diarrhoea d+
Vomiting is v+
Urine is u+
Faeces is f+
Haemorrhage is h+
There are many more, we are sad like that.

If they squit all over the place we tend to write d+++ on their hospital chart  ;D

Polari.

When did people start spelling it like that - and why, FFS?  In my copy of The Bona Book of Julian and Sandy, Took and Feldman spell it Palare.  The scripts for RTH had it as Palare.  There were articles in GT in the 80s about Palare.  And it's related to the showman's (gypsy) language of Parlyare, from the French Parler and the Italian Parlare.

What has it got to do with Scott, Amundsen and Peary?
