AUK Nostalgia in these Covid Times
« on: 13 January, 2021, 04:21:35 pm »
Don't know how many current members are aware or have had a browse of the photos available via this link on the 'old' AUK website?

At one time it was the only place available to upload photos for people to see,so a good collection and some very young looking older AUK's etc. Well worth a browse if like me you're a bit lost in lockdown.

http://www.aukweb.net/resources/gallery/

Hope the gallery can be preserved intact once the new website takes over.

All the best everyone and hope we are allowed out soon.

That's a nice reminder Lucy - it's so old that it includes a picture of me at the finish of the Vatternrundan in 2010.  Happy days ....

Nice one Lucy, a poignant collection with so many familiar faces now departed, but thankfully many more still in the game.

Is that Timm in the stripy shirt?  Pete Gifford in the cap.  Photo's too small on this laptop for any more.

The photo's of The Elenith certainly brought back a lot of memories, usually of just scraping through the time limit every year. It was always my favourite event of the year.

As a different piece of nostalgia, does anyone else still have their 'Made by Margaret Hopper' Audax U.K. jersey? Mine's some 25 years old now and I wore it on today's ride.
I don't want to grow old gracefully. I want to grow old disgracefully.

I did it a number of times, and always found that my finish time was completely unpredictable. There was one year, probably early 2010s when the weather was just unbelievable. One of the best days out on the bike and the ride felt easy.

Yep, that's Timm.

I wonder if anyone can name the bloke in the blue shirt in the centre of the photo. PBP would't be at the top of his palmares.

Now public, if that's any help.

I'm sure I recognise his and other faces, but can't put names to them.
I guess that's Noel's backside on the right.

Names are L-R:
Yellow Jersey - Drew Buck (riding a 1950s fixie that year)
Stripey jersey  - Timm Frenzel
Blue polo shirt - Bob Maitland, 6th in Olympic Road race 1948, member of British Tour de France team in 1955, British Road race champion, Britsh hill climb champion, world vets road race champion (age 65-69) in 1989 , PBP, etc etc
Shirtless - George Baugh
behind Pete Gifford in pink shorts and flipflops - Dai Harris
black T-shirt - Pete Gifford.

I don't think the bending-down figure is Noel. I recall the photo was taken after the event, and Noel had gone to the LRM meeting, leaving Pete at a loose end, so he came to see what was going on at the campsite.

So I wasn't too far out, John!  He just looks the part, somehow.

The infamous tandem recumbent which was christened "le grand lit" on the ride to Paris from the Portsmouth - Caen ferry.
In this age of mobile phones I wonder if the telephone kiosk in the middle of nowhere after the "devil's staircase" is still there?https://yacf.co.uk/forum/Smileys/classic/Evil.gif
