I see "wake-up call" is the phrase de nos jours at the moment.  After England's plucky draw against the resurgent (again) Scots in the fupball, James Anderson has said the England result against New Zealand was also a reveille.  Not so: the wake-up call was blaring loud and long by lunch on the first day but England stayed in bed for the whole..... 4 days.

THIS is how to play cricket - I doubt if even Wow can find anything to compare:-

There have been some pretty remarkable scores in schools cricket but I can't recall any in detail.

My own experience in something comparable is in college rugby. The Daily telegraph once published a match report in which my college team (Poulton-le-Fylde Teachers' Training College) were beaten 108 - 0. I can't remember who it was against, but it was the early 1970s and the try was only 3 points. Annoyingly, I wasn't playing. I was, however, playing the following week when we played Preston Polytechnic and we lost 66 - 0. I like to think that it was my presence that made all the difference...

One lower-echelon rugger team at st. custards during my time there were 121-0 up against $SKOOL.  Being an away game, $SKOOL provided the referee who – allegedly – blew the final whistle ten minutes early chiz.

I played in a BUSA game for Cranfield away at Glamorgan, and after they scored 240-6 or something we were bowled out for 17. Their wicketkeeper top scored in their innings with 60 odd, and extras top scored in ours. I got a first ball duck at #6. They had their Welsh Minor Counties fast bowler playing who basically bowled our entire top order due to sheer pace.  I'd noticed this and had a cunning plan of batting out of my crease and playing pre-meditated forward defensives until I could get down the other end. Sadly I moved forwards just a little too far and managed to york myself despite my plan!

When I "taught" "football" in a primary school, I used to try to referee the second half (the teachers from each school would take a half each) so that I could do just this. I think primary school kids played 20 minutes each way and it wasn't that uncommon for me to blow the whistle after 10.

Given that these matches took place on a Saturday morning, it wasn't all that unusual for me to cycle out there whilst trying to shake off a hangover.

They did make a noise though. Was really weird to be in a stadium that holds c16,000 and only had 1,500. Mask up when moving, nut not when drinking beer or singing.

And in the end it was a straightforward win. Should have been completed a few overs earlier...

In this set is a COVID special - the Umpire with a wet wipe in one hand and the ball in the other. The ball had just been returned from the stands.

Looking forward to tomorrow..

There’s a cricketer called “Woakes”?  Don’t tell Looza Fox or Brillo Neil (below, L)

So, a tougher match yesterday, and a bit of rain to add a frisson of peril.

It is simpler than it looks.

Is that a glow-in-the-dark bail? Or are they preparing the ashes?

I was wondering that!  Also thinking that the betting syndicates aren't going to like Bairstow (is it Bairstow? - it usually is) having his eyes shut.  How can he be certain he'll miss the ball and throw his wicket away with his eyes shut?

Glow in the dark bails and stumps. They light up when disrupted

Yes, Bairstow in the 2nd over. I think he is looking downwards...

It's a great picture J.  Should be in the coaching manual but judging by the frequency with which England players use that shot it already is!

Looks like the coaching manual Kent CCC have been studying this year.  Although some young whippersnapper J Anderson took 7-19.  He could become quite useful when he reaches our MVP's age.  Mr D Stevens is our leading wicket taker and tops the batting averages (second most runs) at the tender age of 45.

Just watched Morgan hit the ball so high that bowler and keeper contested the catch.

While waiting for the rain to pause, I'm watching Germany v France. Germany have reached 34 without loss after 5 overs. If you were wondering, I understand there's a 3-year residential requirement. The other team in this tri-nations tournament is Norway.

Edit: 45-1 after a sensational c&b
