I'd make yourself a longish hoop from lots of short thin sections. You could make two hoops fairly close together to spread the load. However, once you start carrying poles you might as well carry the rest of the tent....

Aha!  Here's a guy who did the carbon-and-alu-sleeves thing:

Make an Ultralight Carbon Fibre/Fiber Tarp Pole Set

...and he's got loads of other cheap ultralight projects and tips too:

Rod rests are never 90cm?

Adrian, 'cos it still ties up the bike.  That's what Charlotte did at the zombie camp (with a jolly hockey stick).

An' it worked, too...

I'm loving the triangulation thing.  But I don't think I can be arsed to worry about weight that much.  I'd be inclined to get a lightish walking pole and leave it at that.

I'm not sure how all this tarp camping thing works, but could you just use guy ropes tied to trees and tensioned, instead of poles?

Me, I just unroll my sleeping bag in a feld and out of view. If it's raining or I think it may rain, I find a church porch, bus shelter or barn.

I have a length of 5mm olive green rope for when I use the camo tarp, but, I prefer the ex army goretex camo bivvy.   The tarp is just extra faff.

I've tried the rolling out just a sleeping bag business but by sleeping bag gets damp and uncomfortable.   I'm not 'ard like TG   :)

Me and a mate are planning to go for  a few days bus touring this summer.   Ride the buses, go from place to place.   As evening strikes keep an eye for a nice spinney or the like near a village. Then pop out, have a couple of beers and supper, walk out after 10.  Wander back to location, then kip.

If we get time we'll possibly look at maps to discover where a spinney or wood has public footpaths, then use them.  You only need to get 50 metres off the public track and will rarely be discovered.

I'm planning on getting a couple of these with the Robens tarp. The nice thing is that they are adjustable height.

I hate the cotswold website.  Why does it have to be so fat and crappy?

That's a really good price - although I think I want to get the 4x4m tarp really.

This is for camping in France with the wife and kids and two small tents this summer . I have a big frame tent - but that means I have to tow a trailer, which I want to avoid, so the solution was two small tents and a tarp.

That's the reason why the pole weight is not really an issue for me. I doubt I'd be taking it cycle camping. You'd think someone would do an aluminium version though.

If it's for out-of-the-car-boot camping, why not just use a telescopic clothes prop:thumbsup:

Or in aluminium.

But is it the Snow Peak "original and best" or the half-size folding flick spork?
