Recommend a campsite near Kielder
« on: 21 April, 2011, 10:24:28 pm »
My LEJOG includes a couple of stages up 'n' over from west to east; I'm aiming to break my day at Kielder, more or less.  Can anyone recommend a good campsite thereabouts?
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Kielder Community Website

That's not a recommendation because I've never been there, but it responded well to my google.

Ah, the Village Site.  Your google beats mine, I'll let you know how it is when I get back...

How about checking UK Campsite?

I've used its campsite finder in the past and it's come up trumps.  There are reviews of many of the sites.

Do the C&C Club allow non-members?

  "Non-members welcome"

I've stayed at the Kielder Campsite. Really nice site, woman who ran it was friendly, hosepipe to wash bikes, 5minutes to pub.

Ensure that they understand that you are a solo cyclist so that you get the same rate as a backpacker.
The club has a policy of not turning away such travellers even when officially full & I doubt that the couple running that site would turn you away in any event

If you're in Bellingham, Bellingham Bunkhouse is also very good.  We stayed there on LEJOG and it was far more like a proper small youth hostel than a bunkhouse - hence the proper youth hostel prices.

Keilder forest can be a bugger for mossies at the wrong time of year.

There is another small campsite near the village centre of Bellingham called Demesne Farm. http://www.demesnefarmcampsite.co.uk/ I have stayed there a couple of times, facilities are good and they do a cycle-camper rate.

+1  Yes there are good showers and it's a nice flat site.  We liked it although there were many Brownies there at the same time as us.

The  village green at **** (I'm not going to say where in public) PM me.

Public toilets and a notice that 'you  can camp for  one night only'

If that's where I think it is, I've camped there and had the worst midge attack I've ever had in my life.
After almost 30 years I still occasionally have nightmares about it.

I camped at Keilder once, with friends who had dogs.

The midges ate everyone alive, including the dogs.
