Touring SPD shoes that are wide
« on: 22 July, 2024, 12:02:08 pm »
I'm looking for some options for wide feet touring shoes with SPD cleats please. Shoes, rather than sandals please. I love sandals, but feel too self-conscious in snotty west london shops and venues!

I'm walking as much as I ride, with no time for audax. When I ride audax, I have fantastic Sidi Dragon Mega which fit wonderfully and cause zero comfort issues on long rides.

I do have flat pedal geared bikes that I can wear normal shoes - but I much prefer riding fixed, and on fixed I want to be clipped in for security and ground clearance of narrow SPD pedals.

Walking is wearing my Sidi's out too fast - and the replaceable soles are virtually impossible to buy. So I want cheaper wider, touring shoes for day to day duties and I can put the Sidi's away for audax.

Thank kindly

PS DHB SPD shoes are much too narrow. Shimano road shoes - similar. I've not tried Shimano MTB/Treking shoes - are they wider?

The Giro MTB shoes - I think mine are the Rumble - are comfy for me, and I have wide feet. Also, they're on sale at the moment: https://www.giro.co.uk/products/giro-rumble-vr-mtb-cycling-shoes

Shimano uses more than one width of last. https://ride.shimano.com/blogs/technologies/shimano-wide-shoe-sizes-explained might be useful.

Thanks both - bought Shimano touring SPD's EX300 on sale at Sigma. One shoe is a touch tight - but for the money, and for the use (short rides around town, with lots of walking) I think they will work well.

I have very wide feet and i have managed to find the following two brands that accomodate my flippin feet.
Lake.
Specialised.
In that order. I managed LEJOG 3 years ago and no hot foot.

The EX300 work well as walking shoes that don't click - but they have some notable drawbacks:
  • The cleat box is much further back - so I have toe overlap (not great with fixed)
  • The SPD guides are subtle, which makes it tricky to locate the cleats (that will improve with practice)
  • They use laces - in hindsight that was daft: The lace can get tangled with chain or crank and I can't stop pedalling... <shudders>
So I'm leaving the Mono as single speed, flat pedals and normal shoes for now.

  • Inclined to distraction
    • Some recent pedalable joys

Did you buy a size up because they are Shimano?

The touring shimano shoes are wider by design, so 1/2 size larger and the fit is fine for the short journeys I need them for.

But the cleats mounted further back gives big toe overlap - and that doesn't work for me on fixed in town.

It's not a big deal - I've got great (but expensive) shoes for fixed long distance (sidi dragon mega), and I'll just ride single speed with flat pedals and normal shoes whilst I'm too busy with carer duties to ride long distance.

Lakes, IMHO, are the only shoes for those of us  with a G+ foot.

BTW, if you want a 43.5 pair I have some for sale..

Bont are known to be wide fitting, even for their standard last (there are wide last options), and most of them are heat-mouldable. They do a couple of SPD shoes within their range.

Thanks all - the Bont's, Lake's etc look very nice - but far too expensive for the use I need. The sidi's are brilliant for audax, but wear out too quickly if I use them on errands. Hence looking for cheaper wide shoes.

I've made my peace with the Shimano EX300 touring shoes - they work fine on the freewheel bikes for short rides, walk really well, and are cheap to replace when the sole gets worn and slippy.

I can see Sigma have the next model up for 40% off, and they have boa's, not laces: Laces are a bad idea with fixed. So the plan is, for as long as carer duty continues (means no long rides) then I'll just share the miles (mostly walking) between the cheap touring shoes - the boa for fixed, and the laces for gears.

Thanks all!
