Hydraulic brake hose / fitting query.
« on: 31 July, 2024, 01:57:42 pm »
First go at setting up hydraulics...   Does all Shimano (BH59) hose come with an end crimped 'banjo' that needs to be removed if needed?  The original set-up is RS785 11 sp shifters and I'm attempting to re-use these, with new calipers.  The original setup uses SM-BH59/ "SM-BH59-JK" hose, which I think is 2.3mm bore.  There is an inline connection along the hose between shifter and caliper ... Is this for convenience as allowing replacement without removing shifters etc?  Any ideas about what to order for these inline connections, and best value Shimano* BH59 hose kit variant?  Long length and cut?

I have bleed kit (and hose cutting tool) and plan to drain the existing shifters, and do a full bleed with new mineral oil.

Despite all warnings saying not to, I've always just shoved the same barb and olive into the new lever/calliper when I've been changing without issues.

I am tempted to run some new oil through the shifters/hoses/old calipers, and then attach to the new calipers & bleed etc.  Test & monitor...

Do the new callipers need a different connection to what’s already fitted that end? If not I’d just reuse the hose. No need to drain it either.  Just disconnect. Connect. Then bleed. Unless the mineral oil is dirty and needs replacing anyway.

The J kit allows you to easily adjust the length of the hose without messing with the compression fitting at the master cylinder. Can also make cockpit changes easier and works well with some kinds of internal routing.

Personally I wouldn’t bother with draining. New barb not necessary but with a good tool it is a piece of piss to fit a new one if you do need to adjust hose length.
