Ride nostalgia

Eleven years ago today. Comet worm's photo. I'm pleased to say that he hasn't buggered up his URLs.

Impressive how easy it can be to recognise slightly-younger-looking people with their heads wrapped up in a relatively low-resolution photo...

Maximum temperature at the two closest met-office weather stations was at Andrewsfield: -2.8°C.

Following the ride previous to this one, where Auntie Helen's trice spun doughnuts on the ice and I did a fair impression of this:

I decided to sit this one out.

NSTN is wearing my Dachstein mitts. She was seriously cold.

Is that Annie peering over Wow's left shoulder?

I recall Teerhgrinder rode $stupid_distance to the start and was icy on the inside.

Was that Annie's birthday? When she bought drinks at the cafe? I recall the heating on the train home was b0rked too, so I didn't get warm.

Her Welshness. Now there's a name from the past.

It was either that day or the previous one. I can't remember exactly.

I've seen HW a few times over the past 18 months or so. She is very much into long walks at the moment and keeps up a pretty fast pace. The longest I did with her was about 15 miles. Proper knackered after that, I was.

Reading back  through the original thread,  yes, it was annie's birthday. She stood everyone coffee/tea and CAIK at the cafe, except for bobb and Tokomak, who were on Jack Daniels or similar.

Good times those rides.

I'm pretty sure I did similar (and getting a bruised bum where I landed on the corner of my Brookes saddle), on the 2010 January Warty - I've found photos, but I didn't take any early in the day when it was icy.

My recollection was that the roads were amazingly ice-free - given that the maximum temperature that day at the nearest met office station was -2.8°C I don't think there would have ben any melting throughout the day. I don't seem to have any photos unfortunately. However, I did find this, taken in January 2010, immediately outside my house.

The road runs north-south and the sheet ice was created after compacted snow (we had had a very heavy fall a week or two before Christmas) was partially melted by the midday sun but froze again before the job was done properly. Absolutely lethal.

I think the ice was frozen run-off from fields early in the ride.
Auntie Helen pirouetted her trice, and then myself and Rower40 fell heavily. We all decided that it would be safer to walk the frozen hill, and tried to warn a car that was descending.
My ride photos show AH on a Trice, Rower40 and also Charlotte on the ride (I can remember being surprised how concerned Charlotte was at how heavily we had fallen).

I think that was a different ride and we all ended up at the Indian restaurant in Dunmow. I don't think AH was on the 10th Jan WARTY, and neither was Charlotte.

I'm talking about the Jan 2010 WARTY:

Thanks to everyone for making what could have been a miserable ride into a successful one, especially Roger for giving me a lift and Wowbagger & Auntie Helen for navigation.

It got rather silly in the morning with motorists getting held up by nearly 20 cyclists all over the road apparently partnering their bikes in auditions for Dancing on Ice. Three of us had already fallen while riding. I had managed to land on my back on top of the bike and have a bruised buttock where I landed on the side of my Brookes alike saddle.  :-[  The look of surprise and elation on Auntie Helen's face as she pirouetted her Trice on a sheet of ice was magical ;D.

After lunch at an excellent curry house with good ale, the conditions improved, but not as much as it appears in the few photos I took.

Ah. Yes. The one I started in this thread was 2009. The Frozen Elephant/hoar frost ride was 2009.

The only person I recognize is Wow. Though now Teethgrinder's been mentioned, is that him front left, in the yellow with a red pannier? Looking at the list, there aren't actually many people I've met; but I do usually recognise Bobb, despite never having met him!

I can't remember what it was, but it most certainly wouldn't have been Jack Daniels. I have more class than that  :P

It's a useful cyclo-fashion flashback. Lots of block primary colours, not many patterns, very few logos other than YACF, not many people in black.

I think it's unlikely that Jan and I will move house as we like this one too much, but even so we spend a certain amount of time spodding Rightmove. Jan just found one rather nice house not far from a place called Thornham Magna and that rang my ride nostalgia bell.

Now that was a fantastic weekend.
