I recall Teerhgrinder rode $stupid_distance to the start and was icy on the inside.

It was either that day or the previous one. I can't remember exactly.

I've seen HW a few times over the past 18 months or so. She is very much into long walks at the moment and keeps up a pretty fast pace. The longest I did with her was about 15 miles. Proper knackered after that, I was.

Reading back through the original thread, yes, it was annie's birthday. She stood everyone coffee/tea and CAIK at the cafe, except for bobb and Tokomak, who were on Jack Daniels or similar.

Good times those rides.

I'm pretty sure I did similar (and getting a bruised bum where I landed on the corner of my Brookes saddle), on the 2010 January Warty - I've found photos, but I didn't take any early in the day when it was icy.

My recollection was that the roads were amazingly ice-free - given that the maximum temperature that day at the nearest met office station was -2.8°C I don't think there would have ben any melting throughout the day. I don't seem to have any photos unfortunately. However, I did find this, taken in January 2010, immediately outside my house.

The road runs north-south and the sheet ice was created after compacted snow (we had had a very heavy fall a week or two before Christmas) was partially melted by the midday sun but froze again before the job was done properly. Absolutely lethal.

I think the ice was frozen run-off from fields early in the ride.
Auntie Helen pirouetted her trice, and then myself and Rower40 fell heavily. We all decided that it would be safer to walk the frozen hill, and tried to warn a car that was descending.
My ride photos show AH on a Trice, Rower40 and also Charlotte on the ride (I can remember being surprised how concerned Charlotte was at how heavily we had fallen).

I think that was a different ride and we all ended up at the Indian restaurant in Dunmow. I don't think AH was on the 10th Jan WARTY, and neither was Charlotte.

The only person I recognize is Wow. Though now Teethgrinder's been mentioned, is that him front left, in the yellow with a red pannier? Looking at the list, there aren't actually many people I've met; but I do usually recognise Bobb, despite never having met him!

I think it's unlikely that Jan and I will move house as we like this one too much, but even so we spend a certain amount of time spodding Rightmove. Jan just found one rather nice house not far from a place called Thornham Magna and that rang my ride nostalgia bell.
