£1k Bike To Work.
« on: 31 January, 2010, 08:43:00 pm »
Suppose you already had a Trek 4400, your clarty old bike, you've done 10k on it, it's a workhorse old hard-tail, great commuter. Suppose you also had a Dawes galaxy.
The next bike would be an entry road bike, yes?

Aye, that covers the "fast" in "rough fast and long" and leaves only the "indulgent and weird" boxes unticked.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Andy, you said you would never discuss those nights we spent together.
Trust me, if you ever, ever tell YACF about the "indulgent and wierd" I will sue you. Specially the Fry's Turkish Delight - that was our secret.

I would be looking for something with mudguards, perhaps an audax type bike

He already has the galaxy. I'm not sure he's actually intending to ride this one to work very much.

I faced a similar dilemma and opted for a Brompton.  I didn't have an explicit need for a folder, but since I got it, it is amazing how useful it has been.  For example I need to take my car to the garage today, so the Brompton will get chucked in the boot and I can ride home.

The need for speed... You need a racer.

I went for something fixed. A nice Condor Tempo. Pretty fast and you don't have to worry about all those annoying gear changes. I've hardly ridden my Galaxy since.

It has to be from Halfords but they can source pretty much sanything- I got my Dawes thru them no problems. I was looking at entry level Bianchis...

That's weird, went in halfords yesterday and they said they can't get Bianchis. But someone at work says that's nonsense, they can. They used to source from Wiggle but that deal collapsed when halfords asked for a 10% Finder's Fee.

I think it depends who you speak to.

There may be an element of manager's discretion at branch level together with company policy. If so it depends wether or not the manager c.b.a..Try more than one branch of Halfords

Yes, I believe that my local branch (Putney) can supply Condor's.

I don't see a cargobike in your stable.

Something like a 18-speed yuba with some go-getter bags and a frame mounted front rack. Add some decent lights and there's your voucher.

If you have to buy it from H******s, and it could be a racing stylee bike, the how's about a Boardman?? No bad reviews that I'm aware of, and well specced for the price(s).
