I faced a similar dilemma and opted for a Brompton.  I didn't have an explicit need for a folder, but since I got it, it is amazing how useful it has been.  For example I need to take my car to the garage today, so the Brompton will get chucked in the boot and I can ride home.

I went for something fixed. A nice Condor Tempo. Pretty fast and you don't have to worry about all those annoying gear changes. I've hardly ridden my Galaxy since.

It has to be from Halfords but they can source pretty much sanything- I got my Dawes thru them no problems. I was looking at entry level Bianchis...

That's weird, went in halfords yesterday and they said they can't get Bianchis. But someone at work says that's nonsense, they can. They used to source from Wiggle but that deal collapsed when halfords asked for a 10% Finder's Fee.

If you have to buy it from H******s, and it could be a racing stylee bike, the how's about a Boardman?? No bad reviews that I'm aware of, and well specced for the price(s).
