BCM 600 Ate My Chainring
« on: 19 May, 2014, 06:13:39 pm »
On the BCM up to Menai the bottom bracket seemed to be getting progressively noisier but felt ok through the pedals. More of the same the following day when near Aberhafesp there was a "ching" as if I'd run over something. Reached the control without any problems when another rider spotted my unusual chainring with a cut out!! The remaining 160 km was spent riding as smoooothly as possible. Finished without any further drama. It is was TA ring with ~ 8 years, 20000 km fixed use. Luckily I ordered a replacement last week.

Ignoring the borkendness of it, how did you get it too last so long?  ??? Two to three times what I got out my original Pompino chain ring! Is/was it a steel ring?

is it fixed-ness that wears them out faster than normal then? My thorn has done 30k on its original chain ring.

A TA aluminium ring. Just audax use but received no special treatment. It's been around the BCM a few times.

Looking at the teeth on that chainring I'd say that something was going to give sooner or later and you've got your moneys worth out of that chainring!

i would think so. you are grinding more often on fixed which puts more strain on drivetrain, hence the parts are more likely to fail due to fatigue.
cool photos swisshat and glad you finished without any trouble!

Being the BCM, surely there was a passing mobile blacksmith who could have helped?
Why should anybody steal a watch when they can steal a bicycle?

Having taken your wheel manys a time, that must have been smoother than baby food & twice the size of a plusnet smoothie (other adverts are available)

That is awesome!

And you did 160km on that too without the option to roll.  Truly amazing and one for the 'Hall of Fame'!

Well I guess it shows how straight you have got your chain line. That's some hole!

I would have thought a place of honour in the trophy cabinet on the garage wall would be appropriate.

It's a pretty weedy-looking ring. Not a lot of metal there. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it  did

It's quite pointy.  I suggest it started off as a meat eating uber ring but years of travelling around with the hatster have reduced it to this

Glad to see the new one is colour coordinated

Yes it does look weedy but it's a normal road ring not a hefty 1/8" fixed ring. Despite that I reckon the tooth wear is pretty good for the mileage. The replacement is a 1/8" fixed ring from Triton Cycles for a mere £5 in co-ordinated green as Vorsprung noticed (pink still available I think!). Should be good for years

Probably too late for this but I converted an old chainring into a trivet by putting some bolts on it, spaced out with washers. Has pride of place in my kitchen.
