Title: Cycling words and phrases you really like
Post by: rogerzilla on 26 June, 2017, 09:09:55 pm
I wouldn't be surprised if there's *some* crossover with the "that annoy you" thread, but here goes:

Randonée -  not often used in these parts, but it's basically an audax ride (I'm not sure "audax" was ever really intended as a word to describe the ride itself).  There is some history and politics behind the two terms but it's mostly French, and they'll argue about anything  ;D

On the rivet - very descriptive and it hurts about as badly as it sounds.

Echelon - you don't often hear this one but it's useful on those early flat stages of the TdF when the wind sweeps across Brittany

Ratbike

Dr. Ferrari's Astana Beans  ;D

It's the older terms that are so descriptive- someone's already mentioned 'on the rivet', but I do like 'evens' as a speed to aspire to, 'rough-stuff' (no not like that ) is another one from a by-gone age that probably has 'pass-storming' as its cousin.

Randonée -  not often used in these parts, but it's basically an audax ride

More broadly, a randonée is not only a bike ride. It can refer equally refer to a walk or even a horse ride. At it's broadest, I'd guess 'randonnée' translates as something like 'excursion'.

Similar to the discussion of 'recumbent', there are a number of different types of randonnée (often abbreviated to 'rando'); randonnée cheval, randonnée pédestre, randonnée VTT, etc.

Of course, as with many words, meanings shift and/or become more specific according to context.

Edit: I like chasse patate. I think more because of it's suggestion of cultural backstory. In literal translation to English (potato chase), it's bizarre. Similar to the Belgian 'dog in a hat', though that at least you can imagine a meaning even if you're not familiar with the expression.

Not contraband AFAIK but they were used as a home-brewed performance sharpener by some on the 2007  Dun Run. You know who you are  ;)

Most racing cassettes are near-as-dammit straight-through with 10 or 11 speed.  Ironically, this gives irregular gear spacing, as a 12-13 jump is a lot different to a 22-23 jump (or whatever).  A geometric progression is the ideal, and that's what you used to get with a lower number of sprockets.

In the extreme example:
http://www.imgrum.org/media/1150935124489129515_555573186 (http://www.imgrum.org/media/1150935124489129515_555573186)

"This freewheel is one of the very few TRUE STRAIGHT BLOCKS in existence. Shifting is only required once every 1500 to 4000 miles, when a cog wears out. (If you replace your chain regularly, you'll get closer to the high end of this since stretched chains wear cogs very, very quickly.)This particular model also has the very rare gold indicator cogs: when having to shift so infrequently it is easy to forget when nearing the end of the cogset's life;- if you should glance back whilst riding and notice you are on one of the gold cogs, it means that you are nearing the time for a rebuild and should procure a new set of cogs before the end of the riding season."

Ravito, short for ravitaillement or feeding-station. Some of the clubs around here are renowned for theirs. One we like is run by a couple who work for a confectionery company: not only do they turn up with large cartons of freebies but wondrous cakes and personalized biscuits.  Another has untold stacks of cheese and salami as well as the usual caek, dates & bananas. Yet another halt at the top of a col has the usual stuff on offer plus home-distilled schnapps.

Great word, ravito.

At the time of the scandal, Mr Gates of this parish came up with a recipe for performance enhancing sweeties that he trialed as party favours on the Dun Run.  A number of us rode to the coast that night, ripped to the tits on a mixture of ephedrine, caffeine and asprin, all bound together in little melt-in-the-mouth mints.

Quote
To put the hammer down – To ride really fast and try and drop people. Make sure you don’t put the hammer down at the wrong time or to the wrong people or after 5 minutes of mashing your big gear, you will find yourself unceremoniously out the back.

A block with very closely sized cogs.  I don't have one.

I used to have one, with one tooth difference at each step, and it was one of those new fangled SIX speed ones (a Maillard, I think), and no, of course I didn't have one of those nancy "double clanger" arrangements.  I was rather less unfit then, and used to go training with time trial riders, or "testers".  Yes, I am old.

Lead-out man.  The last big bloke to peel off the front before Cipollini or Cavendish makes a dash for the line, having cruised along in someone else's slipstream for 150 miles.  Notably Eros Poli, who was even larger than most but stole the Mont Ventoux stage in 1994 because he was still miffed at being caught after a similarly mad lone breakaway on the previous day.

Heaven forfend that a "real steel" bike with a generous dressing of drillium parts gets used on a proper ride - to me, it screams "pootle a couple of blocks to a cafe and spend a sunny afternoon sipping coffee and posing in one's Rapha gear" bike.  :demon:

The original was probably Alf Engers—at least he took it to extremes—and definitely for 'proper' rides, record-breaking ones in his case.
