(paraphrased) When Gino Bartali retired, he gave all of his bicycle-related items to a museum group. It has been limping along, and is now in dire straits. Open only by appointment (so they don't have to spend to have the lights on except for visitors). Al Sindaco di Firenze dott. Dario Nardella e pc. all’assessore allo sport : Salviamo il Museo del Ciclismo "Gino Bartali"
Il museo è attualmente gestito dalla direzione sport e cultura del comune di Firenze ed ha in comodato d'uso, per tre anni, il materiale dell'Associazione amici del museo Bartali, associazione presieduta da Andrea Bresci. Il museo non ha custodi (sono già stati rubati alcuni materiali) e viene aperto solo il fine settimana, non vengono coinvolti enti, scuole, non vi è cartellonistica che indichi dall’uscita dell’autostrada la sua locazione, non è inserito nel circuito dei musei cittadini, non vi è attività culturale con le scuole. Il ciclo museo è vissuto in questi anni sul volontariato degli amici di Bartali che hanno creato una associazione ed hanno gestito secondo le loro forze e capacità questo spazio (qui il sito internet http://www.ciclomuseo‐bartali.it/associazione.htm) è data la loro venerenda età rischia di sparire presto. Il rischio è la chiusura. Un museo che rappresenta un “campionissimo”, un “giusto di Israele”, una persona che è entrata nella storia del dopoguerra italiano non può e non deve subire questa fine o rimanere confinato nel limbo in cui si trova. Non riguarda soltanto il ciclismo o ciclisti, è storia attiva del nostro paese. Si chiede pertanto:
il rilancio dello spazio con una sistemazione museale più moderna ed attuale (gli spazi sono sufficienti), la sistemazione degli oggetti storici in teche appropriate, l’archiviazione digitale e cartacea dei documenti storici attraverso l’impegno del Comune e della Provincia di Firenze, nonché della regione Toscana;
il coinvolgimento attivo della FCI, Federazione Ciclistica Italiana;
il coinvolgimento di squadre professionistiche e di imprenditori del mondo del ciclismo come sponsor e/o sostenitori continui;
cartellonistica, inserimento nei circuiti turistici;
inserimento in percorsi culturali di visite guidate per le scuole di ogni ordine e grado (un alunno di terza media agli esami di stato appena conclusi ha svolto la sua tesina su Gino Bartali e sui suoi interventi a favore degli ebrei nella seconda guerra mondiale e sognava di fare il custode in questo museo);
collegamento col Giro d’Italia (era prevista una visita dei ciclisti professionisti presente al Giro 2016 nel giorno di riposo dopo la cronometro di Greve in Chianti che è saltata);
collegamento continuo con i Media (Giornali, TV, siti web) che si occupano di ciclismo, sport e cultura. Non lasciamo cadere un pezzo di memoria storica del nostro paese.

As from the 1st of October 2015, the museum has been managed by the department of sport and culture of the commune di Firenze. For a period of three years, the museum has been loaned objects that belong to the Associazione amici del museo del ciclismo Gino Bartali. The museum has only one security guard, who is unable to watch what is happening in all the rooms, with the risk that some of the items in the museum might get stolen. The museum is only open for 12h during the weekend; neither associations nor schools have been involved in any initiative; there are no signs that indicate the museum’s whereabouts. The museum was created by the Associazione amici del museo del ciclismo Gino Bartali, and, over the past years –until 2015 – has been able to continue thanks to the work of volunteers of the Association. The Association has managed the museum relying entirely on its own resources (here you can find the facebook page…………). Moreover, the workforce of the Association is declining, due to age and the lack of generational turnover within the staff. The items that are on show have not received maintenance since October, and are deteriorating. The risk is that the museum will have to close. This is a museum which represents a “campionissimo”, a “giusto di Israele”, a person who made a notable contribution to the Italian aftermath of the war. This museum should not meet this end, nor can it remain confined to this limbo. For the reasons mentioned here above, we ask:
That the museum be relaunched, and that the rooms be modernized (they are big enough);
That the objects of historical value be placed in display cases;
That the documents of historical value be archived (and also be digitally processed), with the help of the Comune di Firenze, of the Città Metropolitana and of the Comune di Bagno a Ripoli, the three owners of the building in which the museum is located;
That the FCI – Federazione Ciclistica Italiana – becomes actively involved;
That professional teams and entrepreneurs of the cycling sphere become involved to act as sponsors and/or as continual supporters;
That signs to the museum be inserted along roads, and especially along tourist routes;
That information regarding the museum be added to guided tours for schools of all levels (for his end of year exams, a schoolboy submitted a thesis on Gino Bartali and his actions in favor of the Jews during the second World War. This student dreamed of one day becoming the security guard of this museum);
We would appreciate an open channel of communication with the media (newspapers, TV, websites), that deal with cycling, sport and culture, particularly during events such as the Giro d’Italia.
We are dismayed by the thought that such a crucial element in the history of our country should be forgotten and disappear.
