I can't make the calendar event day so Postie has agreed I can ride this weekend (thank you)

Route sheet received and looks like:
morning coffee in Whitchurch,
lunch in Malmesbury,
an ice cream in Bath,
tea in Salisbury, and perhaps
a pint or two ( :hand: if time allows) before Bishop Waltham

Will report back...

Any recommendations for beans on toast (+ an egg on top maybe?) style cafes in Malmesbury?  Never been through there so any tips on somewhere quick and easy much appreciated.

There's usually a few in the Summer Cafe, but I've found them less than consistent on both quality and speed of service, so I'd avoid if full.
According to Gmaps there's another four knife & forks within 100 mtrs of the Market Cross !

Thanks, Somnolent,  took a look and Amandas round the corner looks like it might be worth a look too.   As you say, a few options

The Malmesbury Garden Centre and Cafe offers a 'Choose Your Own Breakfast' and a 'Hangover Breakfast' between 9.00am and 3.00pm. It's located at the junction of the A429 and B4014, a 5 minute ride at most from the centre of Malmesbury.

It's the sort of fare Amanda's will serve, but if you find it too busy, it's worth remembering the garden centre nearby. (Happy to supply directions if you think it might be of use).

Thats interesting.. might offer easier bike parking/securing options than the town center venues. Thanks

Could be on two wheels as i need to prepare for being an Audax route captain end of June. Lots of time lost with the double-fractured clavicle.

It looks as though Malmesbury will have its work cut out feeding hungry Audaxers, as Mark Rigby's 200km 'Mr Pickwick's High Summer Meander' will also be in town that day.  :)

There are plenty of options available. If you're only looking for a hot drink and some cake, there's always the historic Malmesbury Abbey. Prices are very reasonable. Not sure if it's still the case, but you used to be able to take your bikes inside. The pews are long gone. Every February they throw it open to skateboarders, so I don't see why not.

A lovely day had by all (well me) on Friday when I rode the WW.  You're all in for a treat, it's a good route taking in the best of Hampshire lanes and villages (and other counties) with some Wessex fun thrown in.  The tunnels were a good experience with a bit of a surprise halfway through. A decent climb the otherside, especially for a lapsed audaxer relying on running for fitness.

Not sure I can add much that is meaningful to the discussion on controls as I was a) on my own, and b) rode on a Friday, but I did enjoy my quiche at the Summer cafe Malmesbury even though it was busy.  Bicycle parking is available in their courtyard upon request.

Photos to follow.

Thanks Postie, I'm sure the weekend will be a success.

Just spotted a small discrepancy on the gpx for stage 5 as supplied by email on 26 may.
The Left turn sp Clarendon park is nearly 2.5 km after the R off the A36. (about 200mtrs after the Green Dragon pub in Alderbury)
The gpx would have you go through some locked gates, back under the A36 on a private road before looping back to rejoin the routesheet.
Just follow Sustrans NCN24 and you can't go wrong.
