Border Raid 600 2017
« on: 28 June, 2017, 02:02:33 pm »
I've entered (last big push before LEL ) and I will be taking the motor home up to Kirkley so that I can be right on the doorstep for the start.
Mrs. M is also tempted to come up as well. Will there be anyone else around during the event?

I had contemplated it given its my nearest calendar 600 to home in Edinburgh but wasn't sufficiently committed to get an entry in before they closed.

Im eying a DIY600 either the weekend before the Border Raid or the same weekend (unlikely to venture south onto the same roads though)

Looks like I'm stamping cards at Topcliffe.

Weirdly, we ran into Aidan last week in Sedbergh while he was checking out the route, so you can have a sneak preview of the food on offer at the control:

And he's off.

This would have been my 600 this year if my holliberries had not got in the way.

Good luck to all riders, and kudos to all helpers.
The pizza looks like Teh Nom.

Only a fiver for that pizza, too.

FYI: the town fair will be on in Sedbergh so you'll have to fight your way past the bouncy castle to get there.

Looking forward to the pizza :-p

That fair was quite entertaining last year. See you in Topcliffe, Deano.

I saw Aidan last Saturday as well. I was on my way up to Barney and he was ,well, somewhere along my route.

I wonder who the guest entertainment at Lockerbie will be this year.

Had a missive from Pingu at 0127 declaring it a horrible day for a bike ride. Hope everyone dries out today.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Similar messages were received from Papa αdαmsκι regarding yesterday.

He was at Wooler at about 3pm, from where it's about another 100km.
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!

I got a msg at 1539 about 'bananas and jelly babies part sea houses'. I presumed it meant somewhere after Seahouses.

As Father Ted once said;- "a grand bunch of lads" If we hadn't joined up as a mini peloton making our way up Wensleydale into the wind ,
then I reckon it would have been a lot, lot  harder as soloists.
It went a bit wrong after Sedbergh (my impatience), joined up again at Penrith and stayed together through the night up to Longtown.
It was good to have a bit of company through the darkness. Thanks.

Border Raid 2017

The morning stretch from Moffat to Galashiels was magnificent (except for some dodgy road surfaces. If you like scenery, you should definitely put this on your list of rides to do.

Thank you to Aidan and his team for the camping both before and after the ride as well as the beer and beans on toast at the end .

If you like scenery, you should definitely put this on your list of rides to do.

Not sure what kind of state my Audax career is in at the moment - finished or temporarily in abeyance - but I've always had a big, big interest in this ride, not because of the sense of the spectacular or the sexy, but because it just seems to encapsulate what a lot of big Audax rides are about - namely, you're out there in he wilderness on your own [often] with bugger all help, and basically.....that's it, deal with it or be done for. Get through that, then you're good to go for other things.

Would like to think I can make 2019 [if it's still running].
