Richmond Park deer cull dates
« on: 22 November, 2009, 09:27:57 pm »
Can't seem to find this info on t'web. Does anyone know when the current cull ends (it may well have ended already) and the dates for the February one?

Well I wandered through there earlier this evening, and it appears that they haven't finished the current cull yet (the signs are still up). If I remember correctly, the  February one doesn't always happen and tends to start around the last week of Jan. I thought the Royal Parks website usually carried the info about when they were culling, but haven't found it on there this time.

Are you hoping to get some cheap venison burgers, Pluck?

Signs list current cull as 6 weeks from first Monday in November.

Hmm. There were signs up when I was last there on Feb 5th, but haven't got a hope of recalling the exact dates.

The signs have been up since early Feb and I vaguely recall "6 weeks" from then but I didn't see the signs this morning. As long as you are out of the park by 8pm, there isn't any problem. Several times in the past couple of weeks I've been commuting through the park after 7:30pm.

The signs were still up earlier this week, I would imagine it will be over before the six week date though, it usually finishes earlier.

Don't rely on the gates being locked if the cull is in progress.

A colleague of mine got almost right across the park last year before being confronted by some rather annoyed, rifle-wielding cullers.

Check the notices.

Shame there isn't a cull of the London Dynamos - they're the biggest pest in Richmond Park.

Well I did something I haven't done for a while and picked up the phone to get information. The cull apparently finished yesterday so all is back to normal. Only problem is that the deer seem to have got wise to the cull and are congregating on the outskirts of the park by the footpath.

I did a lovely dark circuit of RP last night.  Loads of deer between Roehampton and Robin Hood Gate (including one who wandered across the road right in front of me), but very few to be seen near the roads elsewhere.  However, i have noticed there are a lot of deer in the park this year.

Anyway, there was a sign up saying that the cull will begin 5 November this year.

The Autumn deer cull pretty much always starts on the first Monday in November I think.  It's usually advertised as lasting six weeks but often finishes sooner, four weeks is often enough.

It made last night's rider more of a treat, because I know that my occasional Monday diversion through RP is off the agenda for a while :(

Do they sell the venison?

I once read that they do on one of the notice boards in the park - I don't think it's branded as Richmond Park Vension or anything - but just sold on for inclusion with your favourite beef products etc.

Signs have definitely gone as have a couple of the temporary hides they put up to shoot from (not that I could see much this morning in the mist!).
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

Yes, to game wholesalers. Apparently an extra layer or two of anonymity helps everyone feel better about selling and eating it.

I reckon compared with other animals used to produce meet, the deer have a better quality of life and certainly a more humane death.

But IANAD.

Poor things.  I don't like culls.  But, hypocritically, I would buy a venison sandwich in Richmond Park sold by the Queen or whoever owns the park.  Could be nice and profitable for them.
